Smaller "Slim" 360 - Now official

I'm selling the ol' 360 for a new one. If only for the noise reduction. The guy who's buying it will be here tomorrow to buy at a €100 but I'm wondering if I should go on with the sell. I mean I do like the bigger HDD and all but lately I haven't been on as much as I used to. Maybe in the long-term I'll enjoy the benefits of having a bigger HDD.

Also, just to be sure, I can hook up an external HDD to back-up all of my game saves, profiles and what not? How does that work and which information is stored online?

use a usb stick, just to be on the safe side, yeah?

nothing except the DRM licencing is stored "online", right?

Ah I hooked up my external HDD and it said it could format it so that I could back-up all of my data. Now I just have to dump the data that is currently on it and let it do it's thing.

Then I shall be a happy owner of the new slim come Friday.

I am. I will use it more regularly than the old one and if bad things happen, they happen.

I'm taking the stance that if the number one selling point -volume- isn't actually significant then why buy one?

If mine RROD's again then I'll return it and if I'm desperate maybe get one then. As it is, things will surely get better in terms of pricing/bundles so I don't see much gain in retiring my current machine early.

Sean, can you actually take regular backups of your HDD on a usb stick?

I guess so. depends on your definition.

you can copy save-games to usbstick, and if you accidentally "lose" the content on the HDD put them back, but you need not worry about that. I've not heard of a 360 HDD failure yet.

(Also: my 360 (arcade) has 256MB of onboard RAM as well mind, so I can use that)

it's still only 16GB tops, hence why it might be better using a stick.

With regard to reliability - I haven't found anything online, except "discussions" muddied by console wars (people saying that anyone who says they've had their 360 slim go wrong is a PS3 fanboy who broke it on purpose to make the 360 look bad  ). Then, you have people saying that "only one or two" have gone wrong in total, conveniently overlooking the fact that only a small proportion of owners with problems are going to report it on the internet.

In the light of any strong evidence either way, my suspicions are that Microsoft still hasn't solved the central problem - but the new machine is probably a bit less likely to die than previous ones because A) it's got the heat auto-shut off feature, and B) it uses less power than previous 360s, so is going to be generating less heat.

Know a couple of guys over the pond whose machines have already gone tits up.

I'm still interested in this... out of how many people was this? In other words, was this 100% of the people you know with these machines, or a small proportion?

I don't know how reliable this is, as the only source I can see is someone on NeoGAF, but apparently Sainsburys will have them for £139.99 on Friday, but only 5 per store. Seems plausible as they've done similar before, but like then you'll no doubt need to be there really early and hope you beat the GAME buying it for your own good. Seen as I'm stuck with getting mine from GAME though I don't mind if they get all my local ones.

Edit: Or according to HotUKDeals it's £149.99 and 2 per store, does seem like they will have a deal of some sorts though.

Fun fact: if you're planning on trading in your old 360, HMV will let you buy a 360 S, take it home to transfer your gubbins, then when you bring in your old one with the receipt for the 360 S they'll refund the trade-in value.

I still haven't cancelled my preorder yet but I'll be damned if I have any intention of playing the thing any time in the near future. You plebs who are sticking with your shitty old 360s will be jealous, right? It's the only thing that's keeping me going right now.

Oh, hang on, I just remembered I've still got Panzer Dragoon and OutRun 2 for the original Xbox around somewhere. They work on the 360, yeah?

Panzer Dragoon Orta doesn't work. Well, it does but it crashes just as you finish the second level and there's no way to get past the crash point.

It's a real shame as it looks lovely on the 360.

I don't have Outrun, but I do remember a few complaints about the sound. (might be wrong, apologies if I am).

Sorry. :P

I was wrong, it crashes after the third level.

There's a workaround (I haven't tried it, so can't verify if it works)

=================

UNLOCK EVERYTHING

=================

To unlock everything in Pandora's Box, simply accumulate 20 total hours of play

time (time spent on menus doesn't count). The best way to do this is to choose

Mission 3: Enemy Attack! (in the Sub scenarios) and leave the game on over

night. This mission automatically restarts, so amassing the appropriate time

will be easy.

Or

Found a way to get past the crash/error on level 3 on the PAL game, it's not ideal, is quite a hassle and you will miss most of the story (doesn't show the cutscenes), but you can at least play the other levels.

First, you need to load a random level and just pause then retry the level repeatedly 20 times - basically you need to continue/retry levels 20 times to unlock the next step, you will probably already have a few. When you think you have done enough Save&Quit and you should get a prompt saying you've unlocked something in Pandora's Box

Now this should have unlocked Mission 3 in the Sub Scenarios section of Pandora's Box, the next step is simply to start this level and leave it playing by itself until you have amassed a total of 15hours of gameplay time - just leave it overnight or something. This is easy if you have a wired pad, as they don't turn off, but a wireless pad will turn off after a stretch of inactivity - you could try placing the pad against something so that a button/stick is constantly pressed (haven't tested this myself) and you might need to replace the batteries at some point.

When you have 15hours of gametime it will unlock the Box Game feature of Pandora's Box, this is basically a level select (with some extra stuff). And you can just start from level 4 to continue from after the crash.

Still hope Microsoft will fix this game, but I doubt it, so at least you can get a bit more from the game this way.

Eh? I picked up Panzer again the other week from Gamestation. I could have sworn I got past the second level on the 360. I killed the boss - the plant thing which is in the river valley. It has spouting buds and you can fly around it.

EDIT: WIKI says Episode 3 on PAL version. ;)

Yeah, the emulation crew need a smack upside the head for letting that one slide.

Apparantly it gets hotter. Total non-sale for me, its basically a kinect port and wireless for 220 quid.
