Its not related, people just want a reliable, quiet 360. Im finding the silence makes me actually want to sit down with some more relaxed games again, like Braid and Hexic, without a whirring beast ruining it.

I'm liking mine so far. I had originally talked myself out of getting one but then my original launch 360 did it's 3rd RROD on Friday so I popped into game the following morning and came home with my 360 S and transfer cable.

I have taken to installing games on to it now I'm free of a 20GB HDD so I can't comment on the in-game drive noise but the machine itself is very quiet.

Other than that it's hard to drum up enthusiasm about it, it plays my games. I'll have to see how it handles HD content over the N WiFi adapter tonight...

I feel exactly the same way. It's very quiet and it's nice to have a proper hard drive and wireless, but I can't really get excited about it. I also wonder how many other 360s RRODed on Friday! Conspiracy!

Ah okay. What do I need to do to register my console?

(Love the avatar by the way. I would love to see a Live Arcade version of X-Com.)

On the back of the manual it says to go to www.xbox.com/registermyxbox - I'm having trouble with it though...

And I'm still vainly praying that they might just release the original X-Com on Live to trail the new version. I know I'll be disappointed, but I can dream...

Does anyone know if there is a reliable list of games that you should and shouldn't install to the HDD? I recall some running better off the disc.

Halo3 is WORSE on the HDD apparently.

Crackdown COULDN'T be, but they've fixed that now.

FFXII NEEDS a HDD

um...

Any reports on dead machines over the weekend?

Read in a Eurogamer comment that one bloke's mate at a Game store had 4 returned over the weekend for whatever the new name for RROD is.

Hmmm. Not sure whether to believe that or not - but wouldn't be surprised, especially as some idiots will still lay the thing on carpet.

I don't see how someone's an idiot for laying it on a carpet. It's going to get used that way, and should be able to deal with it. People buying a console shouldn't have to worry about whether or not it's gonna get too hot on their carpet.

Also, everyone I know who has one says his is fine.

:)

Maybe I'm being harsh. But running any piece of electronics, especially one as notoriously toasty as the 360, sat directly on shag-pile isn't smart, is it? Unless you want to reflow the solder on the BGAs.

Certainly not defending MS's terrible record with xbox reliability, but the punter should aim to use a little common sense too.

Nah, the UK simply has the hots (npi) for the 360 in general. I thought that was clear by now.

  • 2 weeks later...

So, since I've had my new 360 I've been playing it through VGA on my monitor upstairs. Yesterday I thought I'd put it on the Sammy in the front room. So I moves it all, sets it up, turns it on, "Mode Not Supported". What the actual fuck?

It turns out theres some kind of screwiness that the 360 doesn't like, which means I have to fuck about unplugging the Wii Component from the back of the TV (blind, because it's attached to the wall on a bracket) plug in the 360 Component and seeing if I can get it to work. It seems to be peculiar to Sammy's only for some reason.

Might not have been worth the rant but I thought I'd pop it here in case someone comes across the same problem down the line.

I picked up Halo 3 for £3 at the weekend and gave it a go. I was disappointed by the loud noise, but I soon got over it because I found Halo 3 to be absolute shite. I was always a hater of the series on the original Xbox, but I thought I'd give 3 a go to see if there was ANY point in me paying attention to the hype surrounding the new one. There's isn't.

I just don't get it. Dated mechanics, silly enemies and a nerdy plot. What is it that people delude themselves into liking about this awful franchise? Whatever you say, you accept it's clearly not as good a campaign or multiplayer as COD (flaws and all), right?

I had to install Alan Wake as the disc was spinning like crazy in my 360 S. The loudest noise I have ever heard from any 360! It was on par with the PS3's transformation into a Boeing 747 which it seems to do at random times.

I'm having a similar problem with my recently purchased 360S.

It spins like crazy when playing AW, Saint's Row and Kameo. It's not a problem to install, but my old Pro didn't spin those games as much as the Slim does.

Other than that, it's a pretty decent upgrade. My arcade games load a little faster compared to the Pro and I can access my hard drive a lot faster as well.

The only downside is the amount of heat (really is a lot after a couple of hours) and the fact that it spins certain games so much that you're worried it's going to end up scratching them.

The words CoD, good and campaign shouldn't be in the same sentence. As for the multiplayer, they're different styles of game with the same viewpoint. Halo is a lot more complicated with far more strategy available to the player, hence the reason it's used in MLG. Although I can see why people would prefer the simplicity of CoD. They're both good.

The rest of your post is clearly an hilarious attempt at trolling. Try more subtly next time.

I had this problem before moving between monitors. Monitors display at a higher res than most tvs, maybe your tv just cant display the resolution? For example my monitor outputs at 1680x1080, but my 32' tv only does 1360x768 or something like that. I had to lower the resolution when playing on my monitor and then hooked the 360 up to the tv and selected the highest resolution the tv could handle.

When connected to your monitor try putting it down to a really shitty low resolution (like 1024x768) and connect it up to the TV to see if it works. If it does you can just then step up the res on the TV each time to see where the limit is. The alternative to this is to reset the display settings on the 360 as shown here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911059.

I have the exact same thing. One of the first things I did was install Alan Wake and the noise it made while installing was insane. This deep buzzing that made me think the disc drive was fucked. But then I installed RDR and the noise was fine, so I assume it's something specific to a few games.

I install all my games anyway so I'm not too fussed though. Though the disc drive is quieter than the old 360s I would still hesitate to call it quiet. The fan when discs are running are still noisier than my Wii and PS3. It's quiet when playing installed and XBLA games but so was my old 360.

I'm just happy to get rid of the ugly old monstrosity that was the prior 360 design, anal as it is. I like the new design, the old one looked looked like a fag stained 10 year old PC with a load of random shaped and sized buttons and flaps and shit plonked on the front.

First: where did you find a copy of Halo 3 for £3? Because I'll be getting a copy when I buy one of these new 360s very soon!

And in answer to your trolling:

Grainger Games (preowned). I'd have put it in the Bargains folder but, well, it's not a bargain at £3 IMO.

Now tell me something else. How do I stop this stupid console changing my NAT settings to Strict whenever it feels like it? The PS3 doesn't keep making me waste my time checking my connection.

This! I also seem to be having this problem. I constantly have to reset my router in order for it to go back to open NAT and I can't access my PC anymore which sucks for when I want to stream some music to my room.

As he says...you need to assign a static IP, its changing each time.

I had to watch a YouTube video before completely understanding what to do. Does everyone have to go through that or does it just hate my kind of router?

PS. I thought you'd all like to know that all that negative karma is hurting my feelings. I'm not even being sarcastic, it's horrible. The system really works.

Have you set a static IP? and then opened the required ports?

I found setting it as DMZ didn't always do the trick.

On the router you mean? Assign a static IP there or on the Xbox? I don't need to give it a custom IP and what not right?

I have a Thompson Router. :( I've already opened up some ports but for some reason it still refuses to access my PC and vice versa. Care to give us a hand on what ports to open?

If you give your 360 an IP like 10.0.0.99 on the dashboard then on the router you apply the rules to that address.

The ports are:

• TCP 80

• UDP 88

• UDP 3074

• TCP 3074

• UDP 53

• TCP 53
