The guy asked if there were any reliability problems. There are. I was passing on information. Nothing spiteful about that.

I mean youre cutting your nose off to spite your face, the silence of the slim is worth the entry fee IMO.

Even if it's just as unreliable (or more unreliable, we won't know until 12 months or so down the line) as all the other models? There isn't even a 3 year warranty with it like the others either is there. Doesn't sound too compelling to me just yet. I'll wait and see thanks.

Its just as much chance of dying as yours, probably less. Certainly the failure rate hasnt come close judging by user reports on here for example. Your choice, but I enjoy a silent console making using it way more enjoyable.

Microsoft have been very sneaky this time round - the system will automatically shut-down if it gets too hot. It then can't be used until it's cooled down. So, in theory, you could have a system that shuts down every hour or so but technically isn't considered a fault because they can just say you weren't ventilating it enough (the error message states something like "insufficient ventilation").

If this new model turns out to be significantly more reliable than the Jasper model I have, then I'll probably buy one eventually. You're also greatly overstating the amount of noise the older models make when you're playing games from the HDD. The Jaspers in particular are significantly quieter than the older models I've owned, although I accept this could be down to luck what with Microsoft having a track record of using different brands of components even within the same model.

I hadnt realised how loud mine was (from hdd) when compared to the new one. It really is whisper quiet, you'll be impressed when/if you upgrade.

I dread to think of the comparison to a launch model running off disc.

The ps3 does this too.

Thanks guys.

Mine has shipped anyway, it's with UPS now. Should have it in the coming days.

What HDMI cable would you recommend? The official one?

Anyone on the high street selling this for less than RRP?

Argos, Tesco, and probably some others. £190.

Is there anyone who actually knows about this stuff then? Best HDMI cable without getting stupid? Or are they all about the same?

There's no difference, just get the cheapest one you can. Can get the for a couple of pounds or less from the traders on Amazon.

Spend a fiver, maximum tenner. I bought two for £7 each last year and can see no difference between them or the ones any of my mates have.

Yeah in all seriousness, buy the cheapest one you can as they are all identical.

As far as I understand it, HDMI is a purely digital signal, and so the quality of the wiring and material it's made out of make no difference to the end result.

People earlier, myself included, were making fun of the fact that some HDMI cables can go for ludicrous prices (upwards of £50) when they will give you no better picture quality than a £1 bought from ebuyer or something. It's preying on uninformed consumers.

I got mine last week. I'd been intending to get it from Amazon, but last week the day I went to order it they put the price up from £189 to £199. At Argos it said £199 in the printed catalogue, and £189 online (but they were out of stock). Fortunately it seems that if you use the website to reserve one for collection at your local branch, you'll get it for the lower online price rather than the catalogue price. So that's what I did.

Now, the prices have switched back to £189 on Amazon and £199 on Argos online!

Impressions? With a game installed, it's pretty quiet. Running from the disc: maybe a bit louder than a Dreamcast? (A Dreamcast running normally I mean; it's definitely not as loud as a Dreamcast undergoing all those screechy loading whirs.) But if this is what the new Slim sounds like, I dread to think how deafening the older ones must have been!

Halo 3 has been my first taste of Xbox Live, and it's been pretty positive. Surprisingly little sign of all those racist Americans I'd heard so much about! In fact I've encountered surprisingly little chat at all... mostly unintelligible noises. Similar to my experiences on PC Counter Strike and Team Fortress 2, really. Fortunately, by my Halo 3 stats, I think I'm doing much better than in any PC FPS I've played online!

I did initially have to change my router's UPnP settings to Open, and I was surprised to find that I kept getting disconnected every half an hour - turns out my router's Reauthentication Timer was set to 1800 seconds. (I lost 6 Halo 3 EXP because of those disconnections! Arrgh, at this rate I'm becoming bcass! :omg: )

As discussed in a recent Ask the Forum thread, I'm playing on an SDTV (and a 4:3 one, at that). Of the games I've played so far:

- Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden II look fine, like prettier versions of Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden Black.

- Mirror's Edge forces letterbox mode. Text is small but just about legible. But I have to assume that all those glaringly bright rooftop surfaces were optimised for the brightness and screen quality of modern TVs...

- Gears of War looks bad in SD - perhaps not even as good as Killzone on the PS2, to use an example of a previous gen game with a similar colour palette and visual style. It's really hard to make out enemies at a distance.

- In Project Gotham 4, it's hard to make out the decimal points after lap times. (So far I haven't really enjoyed that game as much as MSR or PGR 1 and 2.)

Where do people recommend as the best place to buy Microsoft Points?
