- Gears of War looks bad in SD - perhaps not even as good as Killzone on the PS2, to use an example of a previous gen game with a similar colour palette and visual style.

Say what?

That's not my experience at all. I thought it looked great. Have you played Killzone recently?

Where do people recommend as the best place to buy Microsoft Points?

Zavvi are pretty good £15.95 for 2100, or you can get the code instantly from ShopTo, but you need to have a card registered for 30 days before you can buy some, can get Quidco on them both as well.

Yeah in all seriousness, buy the cheapest one you can as they are all identical.

As far as I understand it, HDMI is a purely digital signal, and so the quality of the wiring and material it's made out of make no difference to the end result.

People earlier, myself included, were making fun of the fact that some HDMI cables can go for ludicrous prices (upwards of £50) when they will give you no better picture quality than a £1 bought from ebuyer or something. It's preying on uninformed consumers.

Quality can play a factor - really cheap cables with shoddy build quality or poor quality/super thin copper might fail and you get 'sparklies' in the image or complete drop-out caused by data transmission errors, but only right at the bargain basement end of the spectrum. That's usually caused by the copper in the cable breaking if the cable is bent at a sharp angle.

£7 for a well-made 2m cable is the most I've paid, and even then I felt like I'd spent too much.

These are the most expensive I could find after a minute or two Googling: HDMI-lol

For extra lulz change the length to 12m. Amazing

It's not mine either. I was on a 21 inch 4:3 CRT until a few months ago and it was perfectly fine apart from the small text and the letterbox. I don't think any of those affected Gears of War either.

Picked one up today, is it normal for the fans to be a lot nosier for about 20-30 seconds when you start it and the die back down to 'normal' levels. I'm assuming not, apart from that it works fine and not sure I can be arsed to take it back for that.

If it's like mine it will just be the disc drive. When I turn it on it will start spinning any disc in the drive but not at a high rate, keeps it going whilst on the dashboard and then stops when I start a game.

Took it back in the end as it was also doing during games (on HD) as well as at start up, it's on top of a cabinet so it shouldn't be a ventilation problem. Gamestation tried to weasel their way out of an exchange saying it sounded fine to them (as if they could tell in their shop with stuff blaring over the tellies and the hub-bub of customers), sod it I paid for a quieter 360 so I don;t think that's too much to ask for.

The drive on mine spins up for a few seconds (5 at the most) when a game starts, and then shuts the fuck up. It wont be the fans, given that the console is at room temp.

Does your replacement Slim produce the same noise then?

I think I'll have to take mine back. I've had it for a couple of weeks, but tonight was actually the first time that I've put a disc in the tray (Reach) and was greeted with a horrible vibrating noise.

There's a couple of YouTube vids with the same issue:

I dug a few older games out to try and the noise was nowhere near as bad (just seemed to be Reach doing it that badly, which I installed to the HD anyway).

I've had a different problem with mine. Bought it on launch and the sound via HDMI is already knackered - it keeps dropping out every split second before then cutting out altogether. According to Lamestation, I have to send it back to MS for repair because it's after 30 days from the day of purchase (ha ha, nice try) so I'm in the middle of taking them to task about it.

He was hardly the most reliable source of info because he clearly didn't know jack shit about what he was doing, but the shop monkey did say they'd had a few Slims back for "noise issues". That could mean anything though.

Generally mine is pretty quiet, and I've never heard it make a noise like in those videos - that sounds like the older Xbox revisions to me, especially my old Arcade unit. Although I have started to notice the noise of my Slim a little bit more. That could be because I'm used to it now though, rather than it having actually gotten louder and it's still infinitely quieter than any other 360 I've owned.

It made that noise while I was installing Alan Wake to the HD but I haven't had any other problems with it.

If you put the Alan Wake disc in (even if you intend to play it off HD) and it initially spins up, does it still make that noise?

Seems to be something that just happens with the odd disc - maybe the disc is ever so slightly warped and not completely flat.

The console doesn't make the weird sound on startup. The Power Brick is a noisy bugger though.

You should quote them their own T&Cs.

- Faulty hardware may be returned for a like-for-like exchange up to 12 months after the despatch date.
