To be sure, I've never let shoddy hardware stand between me and playing the games I love, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't prefer said hardware to be better.

yea the 360 is a rubbish bit of hardware but the software service and games are fucking lush.

See, for some reason everyone is going all " lifestyle " when owning a games machine.

Its just that - a games machine. Or is it a super duper facebook machine?

Think about how noisy the Amusement Arcade can be, when you're trying to play a game in real life as it were

if there was an almost 50% chance that at some point during my day at the amusement park i'd be thrown off a ride and in hospital for 3 weeks i might consider not going.

I don't consider my games console a 'lifestyle' item but i do buy electronics to work because I use them a lot. Something breaking and going away for repair is always a ballache.

There is a reason why people don't just buy multiples of the cheapest electronics available and instead decide to buy something well built that will last. I consider the PS3 and Wii to be the later.

So you could've bought one since late 09 when the Japer units came out but chose not to presumably so you could keep making statements like this?

Ok fine...i work in consumer electronics repair, i see the bad side of things i suppose. Since the Jasper boards were put in the consoles the failure rate is down, but it's still bad. By industry standards its still very bad.

I understand the problem is better but it's not gone.

It's still very bad? From what I've read it's nowhere near that description, esp some of the reliability reports and stuff posted on neogaf

edit- found this from a quick google

Usual failure rates for what we sell (the whole of the electronics spectrum) is around 2%. It goes up and down depending on the product. Were still taking in maybe 10% of xboxs we sell over their life, and thats so far, most RROD's didnt happen in the first 12 months. This is just the jaspers, MS don't seem to bothered by the number were sending them at the moment, however it is a much lower number than previously.

Thats just the ones with the newer board. I define that as really bad. It's a lot better, i don't doubt that.

Depends what the reliability report is drawing on. The E74 fault is the same fault really and some numbers don't include it when its just the message or the one flashing light instead of the full blown 3.

Remember I'm speaking from experience of one (although large) retailer in the UK. There are our failure rates, to me, they're bad.

That about covers it then.

Yeah they should have fixed the problem earlier (actually the problem shouldnt have happened at all) but now? Reliable and, for me, the gamewinner (as the machines are so very very close power-wise) is the pad. Live comes a close second, though.

For me, its the games and the experience of playing them which counts. The 360 and its community are right for me.

the PS3 community members are like the Softies from The Beano. The 360 is the Bash Street Kids!

Memories of a bygone era more like.

I've never got the "silent console" argument. Even the Dreamcast transmitted a little whirrr' from its fan.

Besides, most of the noise comes from from the super fast DVD drive taking off, and not the console.

I always play cames at a high volume which drowns any of this so called noise out anyway.

Such a Weak WEAK argument.

It's not a weak argument it's simply my opinion. I don't like turning my TV up loud enough to drown out the 360 as I often play games once my GF has gone to bed.

It is true that a lot of the noise is from the DVD drive, which did get remedied a lot with the option to install to HDD. Though I've got a 20gig HD and don't want to pay M$ 100 quid for something that should be 30. The USB device update interests me and I prefer the 360 to the PS3 - the controller is nicer, all my friends are on there & I have a mic setup for it (I don't want to pay Sony 40 quid for something that should be 5... seeing a pattern?).

Yet all this & I've found myself preferring the PS3. I don't know why, hell I've slagged the PS3 off enough in my time developing for it, but from an end user sat in my living room it just feels nicer. And the fans are a lot quieter than the 360's.

Why is the thread title stating something as fact when its just an opinion of an analyst?

Because we're on the internet and real journalism doesn't exist when it comes to gaming webshites, it's all about racking up page impressions and clicks

At several points it's been possible to own TWO 360s for the price of a PS3 and the odds of 2 machines being dead at the same time are tiny - so your argument is invalid.

That is the fucking stupidest thing I've ever heard. One of the big plus points when choosing between the two is surely the price difference?

Hang on Pachter? The 'analyst' who's been predicting for the past four years that the PS3 was about to crush the Wii and 360 at any given moment ("No seriously guys, I may have been wrong last year and the year before that, but this year it's for realsies. Put all your stock in Sony!!!").

We're treating his rambling to a three page thread, why?

I don't think Pachter was the one saying that. He certainly hasn't said it in the last year or two if it was him.

Dunno, Pachter's a really nice guy and he makes some bogus predictions (wiiHD being the most famous) and he might come across pretty badly in press articles like that but in person he tends to discuss the market pretty sensibly and is obvious when he's making a bogus prediction for fun- he has his own show on gametrailers as well
