Smaller "Slim" 360 - Now official

I've never really noticed the noise on the 360, certainly not "jet taking off" levels. You can talk quietly over it. At night surely you just use headphones anyway, rather than the tv?

I always use a 5.1 system, and I could always hear the 360 over it, even at decent volumes. It wasn't *that* bad after the NXE HDD install option was released, but the difference after I moved it out of the room and ran the HDMI under the floor was astonishing, some of the less obvious sound effects like approaching footsteps became really clear, which helped massively in some multiplayer games.

This is from the locked thread. I've just turned mine off and the house is now silent as the children are all in bed and the only noise was from the 360. It sounded like someone was using the vacuum under the TV. It's a horribly loud console (I love it, but it is). I'd buy a slim version if it was quieter - I'd buy a console twice the size if it was quieter.

:( Turn it into a huge PC, not the ideal solution.

Again, my recent elite, with games running off the hard drive is what the average layman would describe as....

QUIET

If you have a old shitty rattlesnake 360, then that is why it is jumbo jet loud

My pre-hdmi model is offensively loud. It seems to be the drive spinning causing the most noise but the fans aren't exactly quiet either. As it's quite old now it probably just needs a good clean inside too as it's likely to be full of dust.

Yeah, my elite is a lot more acceptable.

And if you are playing games from DVD without installing, that's just asking for trouble.

I'm baffled why anyone would still do this, but it takes all-sorts

EDIT: Oh and I merged the two topics

My 360 upstairs only has a 20gb HDD so installing games can be a chore. I have my profile / game saves on a memory card though so I can switch between the consoles.

I still have an old model 360 and it is loud, but not jumbo jet taking off loud. The drive is a bit wonky on it too, dirty disc errors sometimes.

Warranty is still up, so will probably take it and get it replaced. I'd pay extra to get a brand spanking new elite though.

Because they don't have a hard drive? Or their hard drive is full? Or maybe they expected to be able to buy a machine and use it as it was advertised for use and in the same way that every other machine of it's kind has ever worked?

Also it should be a shitload quieter (the large vents mean theres a large fan lurking inside which is good).

Large vents mean fuck all, and certainly doesn't mean a quieter fan. Larger fans theoretically allow for slower fan speeds (something I'm sure people make use of), but that doesn't mean that it will be a slow fan. You can have large fans channelling all the air into a confined space, meaning a smaller vent and even vice versa.
