Recommended game lists

There's a text file here with a lot of the entries, so I've used this to recreate it in my Google Drive. I've also made a read-only copy in case someone *ahem* loses the existing information; just post in here if something's happened to the list and hopefully we can bring it back. :) It also might be worth posting in here if you make any major changes or additions so that I can update the read-only copy.

My list is just for MAME recommendations as it was the only broken link in the OP. It looks like Joyrex has since removed a number of the other lists; SNES, GBA, NES, Xbox, PS2, PS1, GC, DC and N64 lead to a "file does not exist" page (suggesting it's been removed), MAME leads to an "URL cannot be found" page (as the link is borked - hence my new list), and Mega Drive is still intact.

Joyrex confirmed for Sega fanboy. :P

Since we have this sticky I thought I'd provide some links to the "Essential" threads we've been making too:

An overview of the threads is in the OP of some of them, but here's the gist anyway...

How it works: each poster should post the title of one game per post (be careful of the forum automatically combining posts!), and give a short description or review as to why it's essential. We're talking Eurogamer-essential here, not if-you-don't-own-this-throw-your-3DS-away-essential. When you're reading the thread, if you have played that game and think it's essential, press the pos button. That way someone who's reading the thread for recommendations can see the strength of opinion behind each suggestion.

Essential Xbox Games

Essential PSP Games

Essential Atari Jaguar Games

Essential NGPC Games

I agree - be really good to start these up again and I am happy to contribute the consoles I know.

Not sure about columns but start of simple I guess and then add as we go along? Name ¦ Format ¦ Region ¦ Genre ¦ Players ¦ VGA / 60Hz Compatible etc ..

Short description? I always find them handy to get a better flavour of what he game is like, even if its just something the lines of "the best of a long line of finger up the arse simulators on Neo Geo" or whatever.

Or just an "additional comments" section, where you can add a short description if you like, and/or add extra info that might be useful to people who want to try the game. E.g. "JP only but light on text", or "this PS2 lightgun game won't work on your flatscreen TV without special peripherals, Qazi" (ahem.)

Not exactly sure where to put this, as I couldn't find any discussion on the game itself, but the recent Midway Arcade level pack for the Lego Dimensions toys-to-life platform is a stunning retro collection. I've barely scratched the surface but I have found so many awesome games - Rampage being the highlight - I used to play this on the speccy but with this version presumably being arcade perfect, it's just phenomenally good to play again. Gauntlet and Gauntlet II are perfectly represented too, and presumably can be played in multiplayer if you have more than one controller (sadly these days there aren't enough sociable humans to pull it off round my way).

How it works is you have your Lego gamer guy, and he gives instructions to build a little arcade cabinet out of Lego. Throughout the rest of the game worlds you will find arcade cabinet docking stations; you put your physical mini cabinet on the game pad, dock it's virtual self with the in game station, and then you can launch whatever specific game it links to. The game seem to be relevant to the game world - for example while in Back to the Future world, the arcade game was skateboarding classic 720 degrees (to tie in with Marty McFly).

i think you can get shortcuts to all the arcades by visiting the Midway Gamer hub world, but I'm finding it more fun to just find each game within the other levels.

There is also some awesome fan service in terms of easter eggs and the way the main game is presented when playing the actual dimensions game in the midway world. It's heaven for gamers of my age (I'm 38) who grew up with this stuff.

Yeah - and actually if anyone fancies jumping in, Amazon currently has the cheapest prices I've seen to date for the starter pack ($40-$50 depending on version). I got the Midway pack for $18 imported (RRP was $29) but Dimensions prices tend to be all over the place.

Updated the MAME list with:

Silkworm

SFIII: 3rd Strike

Also updated my read-only list. Hopefully adding 3S is okay with people - I know it's technically still on sale for XBLA/PSN but I'm not sure where we draw the line. (I mean, even stuff like Deathsmiles and Muchi Muchi Pork is playable on MAME these days...)

Fuck 'em. I don't like XBLA 3S. Those scanline shaders are grotty, so are the health bar portraits and super meters.

Seems like the links in the original post are still toast, any news? Would be glad to throw some recommendations in the hat.

Is it worth us all starting it again? I suspect the only way we could get the original sheets back is if the OP has them?

But I have looked in here a few times hoping ^_^

Joyrex deleted the old MAME list so I've made a new one on my own Google account. Not sure if the other lists still work...

Good work.  Full ROM sets to scroll through would really annoy me.  Unless Retropie has a favourites function I haven't found yet?

There are ROMsets called "No-Intro" which don't have duplicates and clones, use the computers search tool to weed out the [E], [J],  or files... not sure if thats any help for you - i heard theres a program which sorts all that out for you tho
