Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii

The Sarge

Recommended Posts

@APM: Actually the most impressive looking RPG for the Wii was FFCC: The Crystal Bearers. Unfortunately a below-average experience was attached.

@VN1X: I don't think any other RPG out there compares to Monster Hunter, although I just call that "Pokémon for Adults" (and love it BTW, not taking the piss out of it).

I started reading that and was happy to see the first name as was recently playing Radiant Historia. Then I read the last name and came!

P.S. Hi I'm new here. Sorry if I piss a lot of you off to start with :P.

P.P.S. @Rudderless: Kudos for the Avatar. I loved that game and in an odd related way to the rest of this post, I compare it a lot to FFCC:CB because it also combined a lot of little gameplay bits; except it did it much better.

I'm sure Monster Hunter Tri was around the £40 mark with a black CC Pro in Asda. The problem is, it's exclusive to Game so it's not going to be at a better price anywhere. I only have a Wii, so I consider anything over about £30 to be expensive for a new game!

Not sure how reliable the source is, but the following site is claiming that stocks might be limited. (30k of the standard release, 8k of the CC bundle)

Might want to get those pre-orders in now, just in case it is a limited release.

:)

I've ordered it from shopto. It's a whole penny dearer than Zavvi, but at least I should have it on release and not have to worry about whether or not they'll send it.

And for those who want the controller + game, buy the black controller from Amazon, and the game from shopto. It works out about £4 cheaper and you don't have to deal with Game. Unless you specifically want the controller in red.

  • 3 weeks later...

I haven't really been paying attention to this, but after hearing some positive buzz on a couple of podcasts I've realised I'm very much in the mood for a good JRPG.

Rather than break out the Wii, for which I no longer have an appropriate TV, I'm tempted to simply buy the game and play it via Dolphin on PC. Is that viable, or does it tend to take a while after a game's release for emulation issues to be ironed out?

Well Australia gets a pre-order OST, France gets a pre-order art book.... any sign of them in the uk??? or just the red pad?

This got 92% (i think in the 90's) in ONM... i left the mag at home - part for the ridge racer 3DS deal :P

This is exceptional. The world is beautiful, the soundtrack is terrific, the battle system is fast-paced and tactical, and the characterisation and story are both extremely solid. I quite like the English voices, though anyone who's not so keen will be glad of the option to change to subtitled Japanese at any time. It's quite tough in places, but also very forgiving - if you die you start at the last landmark you passed with all your loot and experience, and should it happen during a boss fight it completely skips the cutscene and just lets you try again instantly, or wander off and grind for a bit if you feel underpowered. Twelve hours in and already it feels like the best home console JRPG of the generation.

this is exactly the kind of stuff I want to hear - I may even finish a JRPG, for the first time ever!

Is the story any good down the line?

Any more impressions on the world would also be greatly appreciated. Are there cities, NPCs, etc?

I'm not far enough in to judge, but there's a neat plot device which really helps drive the story forward and compels you to see what's next. I don't know how much people know about the story or characters, so I'm reluctant to go into detail on that, but yeah, it's quite gripping in places.

That said, outside the story, the world itself is a compelling reason to keep playing - it's beautiful, detailed, expansive and interesting. And yep, there are cities and NPCs. A lot of the side-quests so far have been simple fetch quests, but they often lead to exciting encounters or cracking loot so it's hard to complain. In some respects it feels a bit like an MMO, albeit one with a really great battle system. One example of that would be when you target a monster and you can see their level so you know which ones you can fight and which to steer clear of. There's one huge open area where small Lv.15 beasts are not too far away from Lv.70+ behemoths. Most creatures won't attack unless you attack them, or unless they're disturbed, and if you're struggling - or you're surprised mid-battle by a powerful enemy running over to join in the fight - you can choose to run away at any time (though you'll be chased for a certain distance if you take that option).

I'm the opposite now. I have it ordered from Game with the pad, but talk of FF12 is putting me right off. I like the open world aspect, but if the battle system is anything like 12, I'm definitely cancelling.

It definitely has that MMO battle feel (or at least Phantasy Star Online) which is weird when every character except your own is controlled by the AI.

A few times I lost a fight because the AI refused to follow my 'break' move with the required 'topple' move - and it wasn't because I'd done something wrong, as it would work perfectly the next time.

But there's no penalty for dying, and it's extremely friendly. Fast travel anywhere in about 10 seconds, upgrade your party, then fast travel back to continue the fight.

I also appreciated the option to change the time of day - the only good thing about gloomy night scenes in games is the eventual sunrise, but here you can have as many sunrises as you like, one after the other.

Does the time pass when you leave it alone?
