Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii

If you want platform-specific review context, maybe you should look at platform-specific publications. But if you're going to grade something's graphics, you should be grading based on how good it looks. That's totally valid criticism. "This is the best the Wii can do" is just additional commentary to point out they're not criticising the development work, but that they still think they game doesn't look as nice as a bunch of other games. They're trying to be nice about it, for crying out loud!

no - they gave the graphics a 7 because it's on the Wii and not an HD console. You can almost see the fanboy tears as they grudginly have to admit the game is great... but... OH IT COULD LOOK SO MUCH BETTER. Why then did Metroid Corruption get a 10 for presentation and 9.5 for graphics and this get an 8.5 and a 7.0... I mean... Imagine how amazing Corruption would've looked like on a REAL CONSOLE.

Anyway, it's all moot. The game is apparently great and I shall enjoy it with gusto. Probably keep me going till Skyrim comes out.

What's the control system like in this? Sideways wiimote with context waggle and no nunchuk? Or a wiimote & nunchuk waggle-a-thon?

I don't think there's any motion controls at all in this from what I've read (unless I'm totally blind and missed it). It's why you can get bundles with the Classic Controller Pro (ok I know Goldeneye did the same thing...) Must admit I'm very tempted by this. Haven't played a JRPG in ages and it looks like it may be the one to get. I wonder how it runs in Dolphin, would be great if it ran well in that.

While I agree with the general point that IGN are making the entire concept of attaching a score to graphics is so mind bendingly awful that I don't even know where to begin. They have a different category for presentation as well? What are they scoring there? The fucking menu screens? In what way is presentation a separate category from graphics or sound and why on earth would it require its own scoring category? As for their inconsistency, well, it's IGN, fuck them.

Anyway, this is the first JRPG Ive been interested in since Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy 13 made me hate the entire genre.

That IGN 'review' is terrible. It's more like a description of some things that happen in the game. The only time it approaches being a review is when talking about the graphics.

Some IGN hack said:

I could talk about the thoughtful little touches that make it such a pleasure to play, like the ability to fast-travel and the comprehensive but easy to understand inventory system and the story memos that give you a gentle, optional reminder of where you have to go and why.

Why don't you then?

Because you don't have a fucking clue, that's why. Cunt.

I'm surprised the Wii never became a natural home for the Japanese RPG. Given how well the console sold over there and the ever increasing cost of game development, I would have thought we would have seen more of this type. There's been, what? This, Tales of Symphonia 2 (Which is actually pretty good), The Last Story and Monster Hunter. Woo.

Nintendo home consoles have been rpg deprived since the N64. Even the Gamecube only had Skies of Arcadia (a port of a Dreamcast game), Tales of Symphonia, Baiten Kaitos and the not an RPG in the same sense but otherwise still quite good Paper Mario 2. The DS and Psp have tons of RPG's, they seem to be the primary market for the genre these days. yes there are quite a few on 360 and ps3, but not like the handhelds.

Can't wait for this to arrive- the timing couldn't be better for me, I've got a couple of weeks off between work projects. My wife pointed out that I haven't even turned the wii on since last year (must have been mario galaxy 2?). Then she sang some mario music at me, to prove her point.

out of interest, why do we need a new controller for it? Will a normal classic not do? Does that mean wiimote/nunchuck support isn't in????? Haven't read anything about the controls in the reviews...

Pretty sure it supports a normal classic (though the pro is a better controller). And of course Wiimote/nunchuk support is in.

What I'm looking forward to is the fact that it seems to have really moved on and avoid those JRPG tropes that I utterly despise. Overlong and boring cut-scenes, pretty boy dull characters, overly complex combat, punishing deaths, crushingly dull grinding and boring overworlds.

It looks to have combined WRPGs accessibility and mechanics but with the crazy fantasy and imagination that you'd expect from a JRPG with the exploration and reward of a Zelda game.

Sounds PERFECT. I just hope I can dedicate the time to do it justice.

Just got the order processed and receipt sent through, so am incredibly hopeful that this will get sent today. Colour me excited. I've seen a few hours footage of the Japanese version, which looks amazing and has hyped me up loads for this. Will be nice to actually play through it myself and know what is happening as there seems to be a bit more depth to the combat than what I orginally thought.

(As I've typed this have got the order dispatched push notification! \o/)

:D
