Comic Con 'Boba Fett' Trailer

Web Doc Trailer

Preview

During the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 Comic-Con panel, LucasArts producer Haden Blackman led a gameplay preview for the assembled crowd, showing off some new elements of the sequel which again stars fallen Vader apprentice Starkiller. The demonstration built on last month's E3 preview, with plenty more scenes of messy Stormtrooper cleanup -- it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it.
As he showed troopers sliced, diced and Forcefully obliterated, Blackman noted that the development team has worked to diversify enemy AI. Player feedback from the first game criticized the different types of enemies for all acting the same, so LucasArts has created separate AI behavior for almost all of the enemies in the sequel. Of course, this also goes for the new enemies, of which Blackman introduced a giant walker equipped with a shield and a Carbonite gun. To defeat the menace, Starkiller must first use his Force power to rip off the shield, and then take on the vulnerable walker while dodging its freeze ray blasts.

Blackman also showed off the beefed-up Jumptroopers. While they've been made into more formidable grunts, they're now susceptible to Force Lighting, which makes their jet packs go haywire. The crowd was audibly giddy when Blackman demonstrated the effect, with the zapped Jumptrooper flipping around uncontrollably before taking a violent plunge to his death. The new "Jedi Mind Trick" power also proved to be a crowd pleaser, as Starkiller pitted enemies against each other and forced others to run into the nearest cannons and explode.

According to Blackman, the team at LucasArts was ultimately pleased with how it had integrated Force powers into the combat of the first game (and the sequel looks to follow suit), but felt that it had fallen short when it came to the mediocre environmental puzzles. In Force Unleashed 2, the developers are making a concerted effort to bring a deeper puzzle-solving element into the Force-powered gameplay. These potential brainteasers, which might bring a thinking pause to parts of the game, will be balanced by flat-out "run for your life" segments. Blackman showed a scene in which the game camera turned on Starkiller and lead him sprinting down a hallway as a Star Destroyer chased after him, blowing up the path behind him.

Blackman called the game sequel "our Empire Strikes Back," noting that the tone will be darker than in the first Force Unleashed and, like Luke in The Empire Strikes Back, Starkiller will be searching for the answers to his true identity and origin. Starkiller's mastery of the Force will grow too, as he channels the new "Force Fury" ability (a temporary, Rage of the Titans–like powers boost). He'll also wield dual lightsabers, and Blackman revealed the return of hidden and collectible lightsaber crystals (including the popular black crystal), which augment your weapon.

Kamino level preview (spoilers)

After the escape from Kamino featured in the stage demo, Starkiller flees to Cato Neimoidia in search of the captive Jedi General Rahm Kota. In order to reach the arena where Kota has been forcibly engaged in gladiatorial combat for the past seven straight days, Starkiller must smash his way through an opulent casino. As one can imagine, this environment will provide no shortage of shiny, breakable objects for players to flex their Force powers on. Arriving in the arena, Starkiller so angers the local baron that the baron unleashes a massive gorog on the two Jedi. The gorog was the big ugly beast from the TFU2 debut trailer. You wouldn't like Starkiller when he's angry.

After what will no doubt be a serious boss fight, Starkiller and the gorog topple off the arena platform and enter a free fall. Our fearless Jedi uses his skills to punch a hole through the beast and put it down for the count. In swoops the Rogue Shadow to rescue Starkiller from his fall, and he rushes to the bridge, hoping to find Juno Eclipse at the helm, his love interest from The Force Unleashed. Finding only Kota on board, Starkiller resists the general's desire to turn him loose on the Empire and turns his attention to tracking down Juno. In the course of conversation, Kota mentions the planet Dagoba, and Starkiller, sensing the power in that name, heads to the swampy planet straightaway. We are told Dagoba will be the site of a very revealing vision, and though Blackman was coy about whether or not Yoda would be involved, the fact that The Force Unleashed 2 takes place only one year before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope (putting it about four years before The Empire Strikes Back) points strongly to the diminutive green Jedi's involvement. [END SPOILERS]

The takeaway: Not only is LucasArts focused on continuing the strong story from The Force Unleashed, but it is dedicated to addressing fans' concerns (no repeated knockdown attacks, no Star Destroyer bugs) and ramping up the action to make being a badass Jedi even more fun and destructive than before.

Random fact/who knew?: Gamers will be able to customize lightsabers individually, mixing and matching crystals to maximize powers and/or create stylish color combinations.

Sounds great, I really liked the first game and this sounds like they've fixed most of the problems and introduced some pretty cool additions. :)

If they can make it so the lightsabers actually act like lightsabers and cut through troopers rather than just having the effect of wooden sticks, I'm in.

The first one was also a buggy mess. I'm normally pretty forgiving when it comes to Star Wars games, but I gave up on the first.

You'll be happy to hear decapitation is in. From the looks of the footage released so far, it's not as deep as we'd hope (no slicing troopers in half or cutting them into little pieces), but you can behead storm troopers & cut off their arms & legs. :)

Moving on, Yoda appears!

A demo is also due to be released before the game hits in Oct.

Looks really good, a significant improvement over the first. The news that they've fixed the camera and the lock on system is fantastic as those were the two major complaints I had about the first game.

I just hope they haven't included another Star Destroyer section.

Yeah, I thought that was an odd but fun inclusion.

Just pre-ordered the limited edition pack, with the USB stick. I had a lot of fun with the first game, so if they've addressed the annoyances in the controls and made flinging storm troopers around the place all the more fun, it should be a straight winner. :)

Demo coming next week.

LucasArts is happy to announce that the demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II will be arriving at both the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network on Tuesday, October 12th.

The level focuses on the very beginning of the game, which takes in a secret cloning facility on the planet of Kamino. Starkiller, told by Vader he is no more than a clone, becomes tormented by the memories of his past and escapes into the rain-soaked planet with Vader not far behind.

No-one played the demo yet?

Just finished and thought it was actually really good. They've fixed nearly all the problems from the first game (camera is now better positioned and more responsive, lightsabers are finally more than glorified baseball bats - nearly all hits now result in dismemberment, enemies are tougher, visuals are better, controls are responsive, Starkiller moves that little bit faster here as well)

One problem though, the force powers seem to have been toned down a little when not in fury mode. I'm hoping that's more to do with the character and level being from the very beginning of the game.

Anyway, sold after playing the demo. Will be buying this day one. :)

Curse you Sarge... I don't need something else to tempt me this month! :)

Will try the demo just to be absolutely sure this time I think!

When is this out? Really enjoyed the first one myself so been looking forward to this.

Will check the demo out tonight methinks

It's out on the 29th of this month. :)

I can see a lot of people passing on this due to the other games out the same day (Deadly Premonition, Fable 3, Rock Band 3 to name just 3) and it'll be shame as it's improved in almost all areas from the first game. (force powers feel weaker, but as I said earlier that might be because the demo takes place at the very beginning of the game.)

I dunno about the force powers. Some were at max level in the demo, and there didnt seem any way to speed up Starkiller at all. Seemed like more of the same to me, though the graphics are improved of course. Not amazingly impressed with the demo, but its never really indicative of what the full game is like anyways, so who knows.

Not bother about any of those three anyway (well maybe Fable but I'd prefer this). Should be a day one this for me then. :)

Better get cracking on Castlevania

Should be out tomorrow, and if I'm not mistaken it will be available from the US PSN Store later today. (it might already be available, I haven't checked. Sorry.)

Have you played the first game recently?

They've improved a lot, but there is no denying that it is pretty much more of the same but that's no bad thing to be honest. (at least in my opinion, but then I have a soft spot for all things SW.)

Cheers buddy. I can't help but picture you with a network of immense cables plugged directly into your cranium, constantly scouring the internet for information. Always swift and precise! :)

I own the first game, but yeah its been a while since I fired it up. Obviously looks and plays better than the original, just doesnt seem to have improved the actual gameplay enough over it, but I'll probably pick it up when its gone down in price a bit as I like a good hack and slash with the ole lightsaber :P

Gorgeous game this. I certainly prefered it to the far less interesting demo of TFU but the combat is probably still too shallow to make me pick this up anytime soon, especially with Vanquish on the way. But not a bad demo all in all.

Another "Gold only" demo

They just put me right off buying the game. Do the publishers NOT want me to buy it? What difference does it make to them if I'm Gold or Silver?

And lots of them stay locked as well and never become available to Silver users (eg Transformers)

I think Transformers was becuase it was just a multiplayer Live demo.
