Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit

The parts Sarge spoilered say there's Racing, Hot Pursuit and Interceptor modes and that Racing is a straight forward race mode.

Oh yeah, just read that too. Fair enough. Well if its as big as people are saying, it should be very good. I don't care a great deal for interceptor modes but the whole police chase thing seems to be a big deal in this game.

Reading previews it sounds like tweaked Burnout handling:

The thrill of the chase is intoxicating within itself, thanks to an exhilarating sense of speed that's amplified by a rechargeable nitrous boost and some sublime handling. It's initially galling, especially to anyone schooled in Burnout's own unique model, and is much weightier than Criterion's past games. The low-slung Lamborghinis soon reveal themselves to be a delight to throw around, swinging their plump posteriors around corners simple yet satisfying.

Hot Pursuit rests somewhere comfortably between an arcade racer and simulation. Although the game doesn't go deep enough to require any tuning, customization, or in-depth driving ability, it does allow you to use the underlying physics engine to fine tune your racing style and take advantage of maneuvers like the drift.

The game is extremely accessible. It is easy to just pick up and play with a regular controller -- no racing wheel required here! The beauty of Hot Pursuit is that as you get better at the game, you are challenged to drive on the edge. Players will score extra points and find that their boost meter fills faster for pulling off stunts like racing against oncoming traffic, near misses, slipstreams, drifting, and more.

The game's controls weren't just familiar, they were Burnout, or just nearly. The handling did feel a bit different with true slipstreaming and cars that are meant to behave much more realistically, and uniquely, then they ever did in the Burnout games.

This isn't a game that wastes any time at all in setting out its stall when you play it. It is exactly what you would expect a game in the Need for Speed series developed by the house of Burnout, Criterion, to be. It's very fast, and set on open, sweeping roads. It has immediate, drifty handling and painfully crunchy impact physics.

But yeah, we'll find out when the demo gets released.

Played this some more at the Dutch Firstlook gaming event yesterday, they almost had to pull me away from the demo pods :)

In short: OMFG, THE ENGINE SOUNDS ARE SO AMAZING!

Seriously, in terms of audiovisual presentation this is everything anyone with just a bit of love for cars will absolutely love. While actually playing the cars look surprisingly nice, some possibly even better than Forza 3 or GT5 in a certain way (more polished, perhaps because there are less cars overall, but they sure put in a lot of interesting sets of wheels).

I still have to get used to the handling, which can feel a tad sluggish at times, but that was the case with the older Need for Speed games as well. Drifting feels both risky and predictable, but it takes some skill to get it right. Proper arcade stuff with just a hint of realism, really nice.

Also, my highlight so far was actually driving alone, doing a point to point time trial with the Porsche Carrera GT, starting in the dry dusk and ending up driving in the night with thunderstorms all over the place. Howling V10 in the back, heavy beating soundtrack and a big grin on my face.

Possible personal GotY on its way :)

Sounds great, I loved NFS Shift (sure it had a few bugs but I thought it was a great effort to reboot the franchise, thought it was much better than GRiD). Also loved Burnout Paradise so if its anywhere near as good as that I will be very very happy. To be honest Im amazed with the turn around that has happened at EA, a few years ago I would never have bought an EA game let alone be genuinely excited about most of the games that they are releasing. With this, Fifa 11, Medal of Honour, Dead Space 2 and NBA Jam EA are going to be getting quite a bit of money from me in the next few months

Meh, I can live without it.

So could I, but I'm pretty convinced this will be a really good Need for Speed game. And considering the fact that it IS actually still (one of) the greatest racing franchise(s), I'm in for a Limited Edition :)

Also, the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is awesome:

Hell yes. I'm pre-ordering the Limited Edition, and I only do that when I KNOW it's going to be a brilliant game.

Seeing as you and the devs/publisher seem to be bedfellows can you find out if the limited edition cars and/or the DLC cars have an advantage over the standard cars.

No, soppy bugger, I can live with the LE. I'll have the game day one without fail.

Bedfellows? Hardly.

And there's just LE cars for now, but I don't expect them to be better over the standard ones. Just audiovisual and driving characteristics: both the 8C and the GT500 have cracking engine sounds, both neither handles that well (in real life).

I know that, but as I was saying: I'm getting the LE because Need for Speed "it IS actually still (one of) the greatest racing franchise(s)", and it's going to be a bloody good one too. That alone makes it worth getting the special version for me.

Played it a bit at Eurogamer, was instantly sold.

It's amazing, isn't it? :D Like I said: anyone with just a HINT of petrol running through his veins will love this game. The looks are great, the engine sounds are absolutely stunning and the handling is both arcady and somewhat realistic.

And as I said before: this can be the new Blur for those (quite a lot around here) who enjoyed that. The Autolog system alone guarantees very long replayability (reminding of the rival challenges in Blur, only now integrated like a social medium), and then there's still actually racing each other in hundred thousand pound supercars on long, stretched roads :omg:
