Mario Kart 3DS

I'm sure we are allowed to criticise nintendo for their failings of which there have unfortunately been many. The fact that there is little excitment so far here for a new mario kart is probably reflective of the apathy towards the series. It is apathy that had been well earned

Mario Kart Wii (28.23 million units)

I buy handheld Mario Kart for single player. MKDS was great, i've recently been playing it on 3DS. However, the "game" itself is light on content, and could do with some added difficulty through genuine racing, instead of the cpu spamming blue shells etc. They just need to add in more single player stuff to do outside of time trials really. Or maybe have some worthwhile unlocks, extra tracks, GP's etc for beating staff ghosts.

Really looking forward to Mario Kart 7.

This will be the 3DS' biggest seller. It has more awareness out there than almost any other game there is.

It's f$%King MARIO KART.

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, loves Mario Kart - apart from some basement dwellers on games forums who moan about their lack of purity and snaking.

Why on earth do you say things like this? Not everyone loves Mario Kart. Crash Team Racing was far better than any MK game I've played.

More awareness than almost any other game?

Do you think that people actually go "hm, I need a fair and unbiased opinion on the latest Nintendo game... I know, I'll see what scottcr thinks!"? Nothing could be further from the truth. Do you not care that you're a raving Nintendo fanboy?

I though Sega All Stars Racing or whatever it was called, was better that the Wii Mario Kart. Way more fun in single player and multi-player splitscreen, and had far more content.

I see where you are coming from, but I must disagree. The graphics were better of course (though even that must be balanced against the fact that it was 30fps versus MK's 60fps), but in most regards it was a slightly inferior copy. It aped the MK Wii controls exactly (drift boost mechanism, trick boosts) without adding anything significant of its own. The all-stars were just a skinned bullet bill, which was nice but nothing revolutionary for the genre. The missions were nice, though. It's online was much worse in that it was a broken lag-fest - which took some doing, to be outdone by a Wii game's online mode!

It's definitely a very good game, but I think it remains very much in MK Wii's shadow. Just my opinion, but I would imagine its not an uncommon one.

Yeah, it blatantly ripped Mario Kart off. I found it far more entertaining in single player though, (even factoring in Mario Kart's wheel which was great fun to use), and it actually ended up the split-screen game of choice, giving Mario Kart Wii the boot. Says a lot when its Mario Kart veterans playing it. I don't know about online as i'm not into online gaming.

Certainly think that Mario Kart would be miles better off with a Sega All Stars Racing/Outrun 2 style approach to its mission mode.

Frame rate in the demo was the main reason I didn't pick up Sega and Racing Sonic All Hedgehog, but I did hear that wasn't as bad in the retail version. I reckon I'll probably end up getting it, because I want more games I can play two player locally without having to put the Wii on.

I hope Ryo is in Mario Kart. Good old sexually repressed Ryo.

Yeah, you should get it. It's cheap now. Frame rate was wonky in the demo as it was unlocked, wibbled between 30 and 60. For the retail game it's just locked to 30.

Def worth picking it up, its great. I've got it on 360. As Joe said the framerate is fine, in fact its rock solid. The mission mode is straight out of Outrun 2, so if you enjoyed that its win win. Only slight problem is you can't set up a multiplayer GP. Hardly worth mentioning though, as the game is pure fun.

I'll probably get covered in pitch and feathers for saying this, but I really enjoyed double dash the best on the consoles

It was great. It was a shame that Mario Kart Wii dropped some of the new stuff from it. I liked the character-specific items, being able to steal items from other players and the All-Star Cup (or whatever the name was).

It was trash, and don't get me started on the battle modes...

Double Dash was alright. At least it tried something different. My main grips where blue shells and other unfair AI. The battle mode was shite.

Mario Kart DS was easily my favorite MK game. The SNES original was fantastic as well, but a lot of that was to nostalgia. Super Circuit was just as good, although bit hard at times (and the controls took a bit of time to get used to).

Not trolling you but have you tried the mission modes, which have a set of levels you need to unlock and over 60 missions in total which is hardly light on content.

One of the best things that Mario Kart Wii did was the regular competitions and how it used online to offer more than just battle modes and racing. That was the kind of online gaming I felt I could get involved in... also, I probably played MK Wii online more than any other online enabled game as, regardless of my ability, the races always felt well balanced and I loved the way the globe would spin round and show you where your opponents came from... I mean, that's such a simple wee thing, but added a nice wee element to the games.

I may have mentioned once or twice my love for iOS and my hatred for overpriced handheld "proper gaming experiences".

I may have mentioned my dislike for the gimmick of 3D...

However I am seriously considering a 3DS just for Mario Kart.. such is my love for the game in all its forms.

I had a wii for quite a long time (more than once in fact) and the game that caused me to hang on to it for so long was Mario Kart.

So you can't buy a 3DS for £105 anymore so can I justify 170 quid or so for one game... hmmmm...

And I really will only own one game for it cos I will not pay 30 quid for handheld games anymore (and to be honest not much else on 3DS appeals, oh Shadow wars does but I can buy that on iOS for 69p :P)!

But I might pay £170 for Mario Kart handheld... sigh... life is complex sometimes.

And this is why Nintendo are still in business. Missteps in hardware design, absolute risible 3rd Party support for the last 15 years or so and yet those Nintendo exclusives keep tempting you back to the Ninty teat.

Off topic - but shadow wars wouldn't even be anywhere near an ipad had it not been developed first for the 3DS. The skewed value perception of games on the mobiles is going to lead to a nasty place in the not too distant future.

and Shadow Wars without the 3D menus JUST AINT SHADOW WARS

On topic - yeap, it's all about the franchises and Nintendo controlling the platform upon which those franchises are released on.
