Oh look someones made the mistake of thinking Uncharted is a Tomb Raider game again.

Uncharted is a third person cover shooter with some easy platforming thrown in. I'm not denying it's quality. But it's not a Tomb Raider game.

Tomb Raider is a exploratory platform/puzzle game. It's - when done right - atmospheric isolation is totally at odds with Drake's wisecracking everyman and his team of double crossing partners.

Bit of snotty response, no?

Are they both about globe trotting treasure hunters? Yes.

Are they both set in exotic locales? Yes.

Are they both adventure stories? Yes.

Are they both 3rd person games about platforming, combat and exploring (even if uncharted's combat is 'better' than tomb raider's and tomb raider's platforming is better)? Yes.

Sorry if I'm seeing some crazy nonexistent similarities here!

I've enjoyed all of CD's Tomb Raider games so far, so I'm glad they're making another one. Hope it's got a similar vibe of discovery and scale that Underworld had, but fewer bugs.

Not sure I like the M-rated survival horror idea, but we'll see how it ends up.

Damn. Crystal Dynamics.

They are really really good with creating puzzle rooms that take a long time to work out but are for the most part fun. Geographically I'm sure they're tiner than even the original Tomb Raider. They just feel grander.

That camera needs sorting though.

And Underworld would be a lot better without the combat, especially the smaller spiders which looked crap. Reminded me of Aztec Challenge on the C64 the way they spawned. So cheesey and added nothing to the game at all.

Uncharted did what Tomb Raider has been trying to do for ages.

Better now for Tomb Raider to strip all combat and make it exploratory again.

Wasn't that what Underworld did most of the time? I thought Underworld was pretty damn good, although I should add that I bought it for a measly tenner from the bargain bin and was pleasantly surprised.

You could do that to any game in any genre. Street Fighter III and Virtua Fighter: is it a 1v1 fighter: yes. Does they have punches and kicks: yes. Do you input commands to do 'special' moves: yes.

Need For Speed: Shift and Forza 3: Are there powerful sports cars: yes. Is it track racing: yes. Can you modify your car: yes.

It's all swings and roundabout, and it's all about what you want to pick up on. I'd agree that Uncharted is more of an action adventure than Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider is all about, well, tomb raiding. Puzzling and occasionaly shooting stuff while fighting with the camera and plummeting to your death :P

I thought Legend was better than Underworld, personally. Towards the end of Underworld I was fed up and just wanted it to end. Walking into a massive room puzzle thing I was overcome with thoughts of 'not again'. I was the same towards the end of Uncharted, too.

Uncharted 2, though, was amazing.

If anything I got annoyed at the cheap respawning trolls and skellys near the end. (Having taken a quick break to finish the thing.)

Tomb Raider for me was always about two things. The obvious (being the exploration) and the whole climbing puzzle thing. Looking at a wall or a cliff or a monument and thinkins "how the hell am I going to get up there?"

Or in THAT level in the original, "how am I going to get to the bottom without breaking my neck?"

That's Tomb Raider for me, gigantic underground caves all wrapped up in a haunting and lonely atmosphere.

Although Uncharted 2 is brilliant, it does not capture the sense of adventure and exploration anywhere near as well as Tomb Raider.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Crystal Dynamic TR's with Anniversary being the closest to replicating the high points of the series. Although they have all been great, I feel Tomb Raider is still not yet on path to re-discovering what made it so great in the first place.

If the leaked details last year live up to what I imagine it to be, deserted Island with little to no combat and grand exploration, then it could be really special.

Underworld is a fantastic, brilliant game. The environments are gorgeous, the swimming has finally been nailed and the platforming is fun as hell!

Agreed. I dont get the hate for Underworld at all. The Malaysian Island level where you start off on the boat and have to swim over tot he island was possibly the best TR level of all time. They couldve gotten rid of the stupid motorbike bits tho.

Well it needs to differentiate itself from Uncharted so a more survival-based-exploring type of affair sounds like music to my ears. Maybe it'll be the first Tomb Raider I'll actually buy? Still have to try out the full version of The Guardian of Light though. The trial was pretty good anyway.

To be fair though, there's always been supernatural stuff in there, it's as much ingrained in the series as platforming/booby traps/block puzzles/tits/causing the extinction of endangered species. I agree, though, it would be nice to get a relatively grounded pure survival & platforming experience without Godzilla or something showing up.

Anyway, I can't help but think that the real origin of Lara Croft went something like this:

Two games designers sit in a pub drinking beer. They are concerned about the progress of their upcoming action adventure game. Des 1 is absent mindedly doodling on a bar mat (this was before iPhones were invented.)

Des 1: What we need is some kind of strong central character that will draw in an audience of millions.

Des 2: Yes, a unique form of hero unlike anything seen before in the videogames industry, something compelling and original.

Des 1 Looks down at his barmat and his face lights up.

Des 1: I've got it!

Des 2: What? What is it?

He leans over and examines the doodle on the bar mat, an awestruck expression crosses his face.

Des: I think - I think you've got something here.

CLOSE UP on the bar mat, upon which is a crudely drawn MASSIVE PAIR OF TITS.

FADE OUT as JOURNEY plays on the soundtrack.

END CREDITS.

The premise sounds great, let's hope it not only harks back to the originals, but is something a bit different and more about survival.

Yup, love the idea. But if it's a true origin story, she can't jump and piss about with amazing grace like the old Lara.

Curious how the devs will manage it.

Lara's packing a bow — as in the original concept leak — so that's already a step in the right direction from a survivalist stand point. To me a bow would suggest more of a focus on carefully placed shots than bullet sponges, and maybe even an emphasis on getting the jump on an enemy; obviously I could be completely off, that's just what it implies to me.

I like her new look, at least in concept art form, although I'm somewhat suspicious as to whether they're going to take this opportunity to make her American. I'm not entirely sure why that would be a big deal, but somehow it is. (I don't really expect them to change her nationality, I just find it somewhat funny how the very idea annoys me.)
