"Forget everything you knew about TOMB RAIDER," said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics. "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

Until we reboot/birth her again six months later when this doesn't go quite to plan - now that..that will be and origin story unli...zzzz.

I like her new look, at least in concept art form, although I'm somewhat suspicious as to whether they're going to take this opportunity to make her American. I'm not entirely sure why that would be a big deal, but somehow it is. (I don't really expect them to change her nationality, I just find it somewhat funny how the very idea annoys me.)

Eh, what has led you to believe that this is even on the cards!?? She'd cease to be Lara Croft the day they did that.

As I said, I don't really expect them to do it — it would create a greater disconnect with the off-shoot Lara Croft series, for one thing. A reboot simply gives a nefarious marketing type the opportunity to pipe up about demographics. They'd probably want to change her name to Laura, too, as going off the podcasts I listen to a lot of US games press can't get their head around 'Lara'.

Anyway, I really don't see the androgynous angle. I've certainly never met a guy that pretty; I'm sure I'd have an embarrassing story to remember them by if I had.

Was it a shipwreck that started her off on all this survivalist nonsense? I always thought it was a plane crash in some mountains for some reason. Hmmm.

Anyway, one Bad Thing about rebooting to the teenage years: presumably no more Keeley, who did a decent job I thought. Certainly, the venomous freak out and threat of vengeance at the end of Legend was probably my favourite moment of the entire game.

Game Informer info. (still no scans)

- Lara is 21 in this game

- It's not only a reboot of the franchise but a reboot of the entire brand. As a result there will be no "real" Lara model this time.

- They're doing performance capturing with this game

- There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head.

- CD won't talk specifics on weapons but concept art shows a bow, shotgun and pistol

- The lock on targeting system is gone and it now has a free aim system. CD says that it can compete with any of their competitors.

- "I think that the major difference between this game and the old is the concept of smoke and mirrors," begins Darrell Gallagher, the studio head at Crystal Dynamics. "There was an illusion of freedom because of streaming and loading that would pop you out in a different location, but this is absolutely real. You can literally go any direction that you see and carve your own way to the finish line instead of being guide."

- "It was important in the game to not only deliver the character arc of Lara Croft emotionally, but to deliver it in gameplay as well so the player gets to grow into a hardened survivor," says experienced director Noah Hughes. As the game unfolds, Lara will scavenge new tools and gear that augment her abilities. Lara's athletic prowess will also evolve. Some areas begin inaccessible due to physical limitations or scarce supplies. With the right skills and gear, however, the island is Lara's for the taking.

- There are base camps in the game. Here you can combine items to create something new and access a skill system to upgrade Lara's abilities. You'll also be able to use base camps to fast travel to different locations to minimize backtracking.

- You'll need to gather food and water in order to survive

- There are humans in the game, including some of the crew members from the shipwreck off the coast of the island.

:)

It was a plane crash. Now it's a shipwreck; who knows if there's any parental units involved.

I think the series needed a reboot, to be honest. I've enjoyed all of Crystal Dynamics' takes on the game but they had a Saturday morning cartoon feel which, whilst not inherently a bad thing, didn't really gel with what I consider to be the essence of Tomb Raider: isolation, nothing but asthmatic ambience and the odd bit of wildlife for company; sudden, barbaric death; walking Lara up to a wall and panning the camera around so you can get a better view of her angular breasts.

I'm in total agreement about Keeley Hawes, mind. I could listen to her all day.

Not taken with how she looks on the cover, it must be said. Just knee jerk reaction, like.

EDIT: I don't me dirt and stuff, just her face. Just doesn't look very...Lara. If you get me.

So basically they're doing a mash up of Zelda and Resident Evil 4 (with all the "gorey death" cut scenes) starring Hilary Swank?

I'm sure these clowns actually like the idea of reboots fucking up, it means they can do another reboot every couple of years. Maybe it's because there hasn't been a console generation released that they can't get away with "here's the same game, but with nicer graphics" they just go "here's the same game, but with a younger lead character and slightly different script (e.g. replace plane with ship)".

The preview sounds excellent, although that is often the wont of such things. It certainly reads like exactly the game I'd want to play and I've a fair bit of faith in Crystal Dynamics, so as of the moment there's nothing putting me off it.

Shame it's likely almost a year away.

In a world where Uncharted 1 & 2 exist, this reboot is going to have to be something very special indeed if it wants to be ranked among the heavy hitters. I dont know, there really hasnt been a truly exceptional TR game sicne Anniversary, and even that was a reamke of TR1. CD almost got it right with Underworld, but dropped the ball with stupid motorbike bits, but when they set about making actual proper tomb raiding levels it was fantastic. This is either going to be a second coming of Metroid prime style awesomeness, or a complete faceplant of angel of darkenss proprtions. As excited a i am for this, ive been told 'new Lara will be better than ever!!' one too many times at this stage.

I think that's kind of the point though isn't it?

This is funny:

And this

A little nod to Naughty Dog in the styling?

I loved Tomb Raider Anniversary and bits of Legend and Underworld. Overall I thought Underworld had more good bits than Legend, but the shit bits in Underworld were shitter than anything in Legend.

This looks great so far, but I thought Underworld looked great at first too.

Is there a Tomb Raider cycle jpeg?

I don't get this. Uncharted 1 and 2 has more in common with Gears of War and Prince of Persia than Tomb Raider, IMO.

Yeah, but it defeats the object of what I think they're trying to do. Although, they've trued to bring some substance to Lara for the last 3 games, so a total reboot seems to make sense.

Doesn't mean a squat of fucking anything if the games fucking shit and marketed by a chimp.
