We don't like waggle

I just bought RE4 Waggle Edition. And fucking fuck it's weird playing it with the Wii thingys. It made me realise that I have no experience using them. It's really weird. Every 5 minutes I'm about to order a classic controller pro or plugin in a GC controller. But I won't give up. I'll learn and master this weird and alien control method.

Ken Levine is one of us

Excellent quote: "“Do you want to play BioShock and it’s like, ‘okay, do you want to harvest or save Little Sister? Waggle left to harvest, waggle right to save!’” Levine told Play.

“You can have Move support on your box but people are going to know you’re cheating them.”

The designer seems to feel that motion support doesn’t work as an added gimmick, and that in BioShock Infinite, that’s all it could be."

Stick that in your wagglestick and smoke it, wagglelovers :)

I don't think even the most fervent of 'wagglelovers' is supporting the use of motion support as an added gimmick. But the fact that it isn't suitable for Bioshock Infinite does not argue against its viability per se. Just that badly implemented waggle is bad. We all agree with that surely? Much better to focus on actual examples; for instance I've just started playing Godfather: Blackhand Edition which is proof positive that, when done well, waggle can enhance a game. :sherlock:

BEHOLD! Another Believer...

Godfather on the Wii was, and remains, one of the best implementations of waggle and pointer control yet.

I actually played Godfather on the Wii, mainly because Scott used to go on and on about it. To be brutally honest, I thought the game was shit on the other platforms and that it was just as shit on the Wii, and the waggley-waggley controls didn't impress me at all.

Have wagglers been shown up in Killzone 3 MP yet?

The game doesn't inform you who is using what, so I can't tell exactly how well motion control is doing against dualshocks, but I've managed to waggle my way up to a current kill/death ratio of 2. Which I'm pretty pleased with.

I'm just sticking to deathmatch because I'm not really into cooperating and objectives, but I think Killzone 3 is officially now my favourite ever online game that isn't a racing game.

Quoted out of context, as confirmed by Mr. Levine himself when I went "FFFFFUUUU-" at him about it on twitter. :)

I've don't like waggle tbh. I much prefer Wii games that mostly use the pointer for aiming (Prime 3  ) & leave the motions for occassional attack animations (Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy) as it does feel more involving than pressing a button. Driving home my sword attacks to the bosses weak point in TP & delivering that final bop on the nose to Bowser in Galaxy was very visceral & Satisfying with the Wii remote, but in the first instance I was just shaking the remote madly & in the second I wound up like a baseball pitcher for the final strike, so I guess it really does depend on the implementation.

IMO the real acid test for just how well motion controls can be put into a real game will be Skyward Sword. It will either confirm them as a valid addition to the control setup of standard games or it will show them up as inferior or to limited compared to standard control schemes.

Several people have done so on this very forum. "It makes me feel so much more involved!", they say, "waggling is just more fun than pressing a button!"

Some even said "I don't want to play games with traditional controls anymore! They feel so boring and old fashioned now!"

To be fair, I think both of those were just Davros, bless 'im.
