I'll stick up for NWN oc a little here, while not the greatest story ever told I really enjoyed it myself. What's your favourite mods than Campfire?

I'm currently playing The Aielund Saga, which is amazing. It's a proper epic campaign - it's largely hack and slash, but has a twisting, turning storyline with some nice role-play opportunities. I've just got the first part of the last act and I've gone from a nobody running errands in a backwater village to a dragon-slaying princess-romancing badass baron of the kingdom. A lot of players recommend playing it instead of the original campaign, and I can definitely see why.

I'm also a huge fan of Tortured Hearts II, which is basically a massive Oblivion-esque RPG world rendered in the NWN engine, and Excrucio Eternum, which is a dark and twisted story set in a mental hospital - it has a similar air to Planescape: Torment, and some fantastic writing and characterisation. They both have prequels that aren't quite as good, but are definitely worth a look.

There's also A Dance With Rogues, which manages to be an utterly brilliant immersive thief/assassin module while at the same time being full of the worst excesses of 'erotic' fan writing. It's like a Thief: The Dark Project movie as directed by Ken Russell.

I enjoyed the Dreamcatcher campaign, which shows some of the creative things people have done with the engine. And Exile of the West, the first of the Bastard of Kosigan sequence, which is set in an fantasy version of medieval Germany, in a war between witches and the Catholic church.

I also loved what I played of Almraiven, although I need to restart it with a more suitable character. That's the necromancer secret agent mod, and the world creator Fester Pot designed for it is unbelievably dense and detailed.

And a special mention for Arbor Falls, which is a persistant world. I haven't played it as a persistant world - I've only loaded up the mod in single player and had a look around - but it is by far the most graphically accomplished mod I've seen for Neverwinter Nights. It looks like an entirely different game.

Some of those sound pretty decent.

Are the mods easy to install, and can you have more than one installed at a time? So, could I run the vanilla campaign concurrently with a mod, or does the mod overwrite certain files?

The vast majority of modules are easy to install, and you can have as many mods installed at the same time as your harddrive can hold. Just put the required files into the required folders, then choose Other Modules when starting a new game and select the mod you want from the list. *.mod files (the adventures themselves) go into the modules folder and *.hak files (any extra assets required by the adventure* go into the hak folder.

Any other files - music, movies, characters, portraits, etc - go into their respective folders. If in doubt, just shove them in the folder full of the same kind of files.

The only exceptions are files that go in the Override folder, which override the game's assets. You don't need to add any of these for any module, but sometimes the author will recommend it, to keep the player's experience more in line with their vision.

I'd only heard about this website through here recently and what a wonderful trip down memory lane it is. As someone who worked at VIE/Interplay it's great to see the classic RPG's getting all the love.

Where to start though. Maybe BG and work up from there.

Icewind Dale 2 was one of those games I always wanted to try after playing BG2 but never got around to it. So now no excuse not to buy that, Temple of Elemental Evil and Neverwinter Nights, just need to find the time to play them. What with the games I keep getting in the Steam sales and Christmas sales not too far off either I could have enough to keep me going next year bought be the first few weeks in Jan. Does GOG have big Christmas sales as well, with so much to play already I can wait to pick them up?

They do have the odd offer, but nothing as insane as the Steam sales so far. The stuff they sell is pretty cheap to start with mind.

I appear to have a grand total of 204 games in my Steam library now, and loads of those haven't even been installed, let alone played. I could probably avoid buying anything for a year and still have plenty to play.

Yeah they are priced really well, especially when you consider unlike older games on Steam you know these will work on a modern system. Just need to look at Steams latest deal on the Classic GTA games to see an example of its problems.

But like you plenty of games to play on Steam so can wait until the right moment or price to get them. Anyone know roughly how long each IWD2, TEE and NWN are?

Baldur's Gate II complete is now available, that's BG II and Throne of Bhaal for $9.99. Absolute bargain and a must buy for anyone slightly interested in it, brilliant game. If you get it I'd recommend checking out The Gibberlings 3 for the BG2 fix pack and tweak pack, worth having a read about what they add as you can choose what to install and what not, worth it just for the bags of holding. Also make sure you get the widescreen mod from the downloads section, game still looks lovely with that.

:omg:

Awesome, yet another RPG to add to my 'now playing' list which currently consists of New Vegas, Two Worlds 2, Risen, and Titan Quest: Immortal Throne  Total rpg overdose and I'm loving it! Shit, I should just get the Divinity II expansion/remake too and go all out!

GoG is amaze

Well, a fantastic offer this weekend - four adventure games in four distinct genres: a traditional avatar-directing P&C; a first-person 'flick-screen' adventure gamein the vein of Cryo's old adventures; one of the last gasps (and best examples of) the old interactive movie genre; and an odd, top-down adventure game, at least three of which are brilliant, all 50% off. And for once, you don't have to buy all of them for that discount - pick and choose!

They are, in order of brilliance:

The Longest Journey for $4.99 (wonderful game. If you've never played it, do so now. Absolutely unmissable adventure game)

Sanitarium for $4.99 (an odd approach to a point & click, being aesthetically in the same vein as the old Bioware RPG's, and set in the cheery world of an insane asylum inmate's dreams. Sinister and compelling)

Tex Murphy: The Pandora Directive for $4.99 (it's Tex Murphy! You know! The uniformly-awfully acted, hilarious future-noir interactive movie games in which you play, er, Tex Murphy, private detective! Really good entertainment, even if the FMV has aged terribly)

The Journeyman Project 2 for $2.99 (only ever played the demo of this, many many moons ago. Still, it's a 'classic' of the flick-screen genre, and hey, it's only $2.99 - I figured I'd give it a punt anyway. Not sure when I'll get around to playing it, mind :D )

PS - they've also updated their core version of Arcanum to be fully compatible with Windows 7, apparently without glitches. I'll have to redownload and install it, I guess...

Apparently there's a BIG surprise today on GOG! Rumour has it that the Thief games are coming to GOG :omg: Anachronox is also rumoured but I'd rather have Thief of course. Naturally both rumours could be correct as it has been said that GOG would sign announce another big publisher before the end of the year, and if it's Eidos then we'd have both Thief and Anachronox. And maybe even the Kain games!

Edit: and it's 'just' a sale

Edit edit: fuck me it looks like everything is on sale  If you've been waiting for Planescape Torment or Baldur's Gate 2 to be on sale you didn't have to wait long!

Yeah mainly RPG's and some point and clicks I might have missed around that time of gaming. I didn't like Balders Gate when I first got it, but that was before KOTOR turned me onto Bioware (and before morrowind turned me onto wrpgs) and I've been a massive Bio fan since so wouldn't mind giving it a second chance.

There's a bunch of mods for it to add widescreen support, make the UI better and generally fix any issues. http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?showtopic=231567&view=findpost&p=7406391 In fact this guide http://thunderpeel2001.blogspot.com/2009/01/planescape-torment-fully-modded.html is probably a good help too - us gogers need only start from step 3a

Thanks, grabbed Planescape first to see how everything runs on my system at ze older time res and will buy the others a bit later probably

You can get a widescreen mod for Planescape, Bulders Gate and the Icewind Dale games here, they all still look really good once modded. lots of other mods and fixes there as well, it's a great resource for these games.

I was hopinf their countdown would lead to a sale, definetly getting Temple of Elemental Evil and Neverwinter Nights.

Just bought Beyond Good and Evil, Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldurs 1 + 2 (even though I have the original of BG1 sitting on CD somewhere) and Two Worlds for under £20 - shame MDK 1 + 2 and Messiah aren't on sale at the moment I'd have nabbed them too :)

Apologies where is step 3a? I installed the widescreen mod and this http://www.gibberlings3.net/pst/ but it stopped the game working. Won't launch. Reninstalling it now.

I agree with Mortis and JPR - Planescape is the absolute must-buy, after all these years there still isn't an rpg out there that comes close to the quality of its story, characters, and dialogue. Just be sure Uzi (and anyone else playing it for the first time for that matter) to give it the time it needs. Don't play it for 5 minutes to see what it's like and move on to the next big thing. Save it for when you're ready to put the time in and allow yourself to be immersed in the storyline. It's quite unlike any other rpg you'll ever play as you'll soon see. Don't be afraid to read up on it a bit (avoiding spoilers of course) and take a look at the manual that comes with the GOG version in PDF format (download it from your games library on GOG). And obviously use the links to mod it for modern resolutions, it looks fabulous in HD but don't forget the UI fix for widescreen resolutions too.

One of the best games ever made

Btw, in three days the next batch of games go on sale, so anybody waiting for MDK or Messiah just needs to be patient :P

Thanks. And Gerbik I played the first 5 mins of Planescape and I loved it, picked a character with high wisdom, intellect and charisma because I love talking in well written games and this apparently has lots

Nice! :D It only gets better and better - and you'll soon see that you can resolve the vast majority of the quests through talking, which is usually also the most entertaining way and outcome to do it.
