Rob you can unlock any car at any time, have you been to the showroom?

No no nooooooooooooooooooo!

Did no one read my thread?!?

http://www.rllmukforum.com/index.php?showtopic=24494&st=0

Don't goto the showroom, it takes an age to walk around, and you can't look at cars by class.

Yes, your method is easier, but my method is the closest I'll get to walking around a car showroom picking out exotit cars. Plus you get to test drive them AND see them driven out for you. Atmosphere man, atmosphere :)

Oh and Rob, the showroom is in the one player screen right before you race, or the screen before I don't remember right now. Anyway, the options are "Somethin (I can't remember), Garage and Showroom". You'll want the third option.

True, true - it's just nice to have the option to get them quickly without messing about. I think that's one of the things the game lacks - an obvious menu where you can just go and buy cars. Look how many people didnt know about the Ghost Challenge screen! Mind you it's a bit nit picky having a go, when the rest of the game is SO brilliant - but hey you have to criticise something don't you? :)

After the advice last night I've just been going through starting with Silver's and missing out Steel and Bronze all together, then going straight onto the next challenge.

Also, before I unlock a car in any class, I check the ranking of that class to see which car is being used to get the best scores and unlock it.

Now I'm flying through the classes.

Those were top games last night, I'm not sure quite how we won Cat and Mouse on the Nurburgring...I was behind for ages, and despite being spun metres from the line, I crept over for the win!

Great stuff...those 14 minutes just flew by!

Nice races last night. Penguin, you seemed most put out with myself... :P

Well it was you and it wasn't. After those first two races, you bashed me off on a couple of corners. Bit dirty I thought...

As soon as someone starts to knock me about, I get a "bit" annoyed with them...nothing personal like, you were just the object of my WRATH...at the time. :D

To be honest it's just the nature of the game. I don't mean to bash you out of the way just use you as a way to get round the corner. It happens often enough and everyone does it as far as I can see. No ill will, I do it to everyone and everyone does it to me.

Use me as a way to get round a corner? See in my estimation this is one big problem with the game - let me explain.

Never mind how MarioKart cheats, in PGR2 you can often be at an advantage going into a corner if you are tucked in behind someone.

"I'll just ram em into a wall, or use them to get round a corner"

Ok whats wrong with that? Nothing, as it's in the "rules" of the game...but if these races were anything approaching real (especially with these sorts of cars), you'd not do that. Can you see real drivers smashing the hell out of each other because of it? You wouldn't even see such blatent crashing during TOCA races.

I bet you even swerve to bash people off the road if they are coming past you. Why do people do this? I let others past...if they've got the right line or speed just let em past! They've driven better than me there, and thus they deserve to get past me.

That's why I get angry, because people take it as given that it's fine to smack others about. I take anyone who does this to be an unskillful oaf, who is only out for their own personal glory.

Personally I always ALWAYS try to drive courteously...unless everyone else is playing like dirty sods, then I switch to these "ramming" tactics. You saw this briefly last night - but once during a race, this guy kept hitting me on corners. I told him to stop. He didn't...

So I started swearing and then just constantly took him out. BANG BANG BANG. Every corner I was knocking him off, slowing down, then letting him go past me...and then doing the same again and again.

During the second race of this he gave up, started doing donuts in the road, and then quit the server. You know what? It serves him right.

I want a racing game, not a destruction derby thank you. If anyone wants a piece of me, then I will take a piece of them...again and again and again to learn em proper!

Anyway this also impacts upon the SP game, as the AI controlled cars are absoulte bastards, and seem to know how and where to hit you to send you spinning off into a barrier.

A mode to give some F1 style rules would have been nice...but I guess people wouldn't want that, the yobs.

P.s. Once again nothing personal, just the reasoning behind my road rage! :P

Hmm, that makes me feel both good and bad. I try to not hit people as like you say, it's not a destruction derby sort of game, but at the same time I'm fucking shit at it so I inevitably end up crashing into someone as I misjudge a corner. They then think that's the go ahead to start ramming and then I'm proper fucked.

Anyway, we can operate on a "Gentleman's Rules" ethos in some of our races from now on where constant ramming could be penilized with being shouted at. Or kicked out*.

*Except me, 'cos I'm crap.

Hey no just ignore me Monk. I'm sure it's only me who feels like this! Got to do what the majority want, of course.

Still don't mean I'm not gonna beat down any mofo who messes with my paintwork :D

Not at all, it winds me up too.

It's fair enough if you get clipped when you're both going for a corner, but there's people that just ram you every time. That makes it less a racing game, and more a 'who can avoid being rammed' game. I jump around rooms until I find one where that's not happening so much, and play there. It's often newbies, which is fair enough, but there's plenty of experienced types that do it too, which is just shit.

Like I said, the odd little bump is fine, but if you get rammed on the first corner and spin out it's game over for the rest of the race, which is no fun.

Ok, I don't specifically go out of my way to trash people at corners and I don't take people out if they're passing me on a straight (except if it's the finishing straight - only then will I fight for my position). It's not a glory thing - hell, it's not like anyone gives a shit if they come first or whatever. Penguin, if I annoyed you, I apologize, but you can't equate this game to real life, It's a game, and the rules allow you to shunt into people. I just accept this as it happens often enough to me as well.

This is one of the reasons I hate being on the front of the grid during LIVE play, this is inevitably what happens:

3-2-1 GO!

Accelerate to 1st corner, brake and turn in....WHACK!

Might as well have not bothered braking as no-one else has and you just get flung into a wall, spun out and end up last. :D

I'm with penguin lad on this one, I try to drive correctly, apologise to people if I prang them on a corner (usually 'cos I'm crap) and do not weave if someone is drafting me......but other people just don't seem to care.

If you get in with a good group of people, proper racing is great but, the flip side is that the majority of people playing the game have no regard for racing lines and being courteous.

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE YANKS! :P

I played Egham Ninja though and he's really good

Nonsense. He's just had a 2/3 week head start on the rest of us. He's been getting by on number of hours put in, not on raw driving talent. He will be beaten. Oh yes.

:D

Anyway, what's all this about dirty tactics? I don't play the game for a few days and gentlemanly behaviour is thrown out the window. Squirtle, shame on you!

Mind you, a few people have accused me of sonme dodgy tactics, but I agree with the guy who saud it was just their dodgy driving. If you're in front of me, I'll try not to take you out, but if you're behind me I'm going to pick whatever line I want, even if it is somewhat... unconventional. I don't have time to look in my mirror when I'm on the ragged edge of control.

I watched Top Gear for pretty much the first time ever this weekend, and they had on a bunch of cars that you can unlock in the game. They showed or talked about the fancy Merc, the fancy Porsche, the Enzo, the Noble, the Porsche Cayenne. I could nod sagely while watching it. At this rate I'll be able to have a sensible conversation with my dad about cars. It remind me of the heady days of GT1 when I was drooling over every Skyline or Impreza or Supra parked in the street.

Hang on, hang on!

I'm not being the subject of some witch hunt here. The amount of times I've been twatted out of the way on the corner by somebody on the forum doesn't bear thinking about. It happens. It's no big deal. It's just a game. Fist corner pile ups are always like this and I don't use dirty tactics at all. I don't swerve all over the road to stop people passing - in fact I remember on a few occasion on saturday night that I just let people through after fucking up a corner.

At the end of the day, it is just a game and the same range of tactics are open to anyone. Who was it that kept twatting me into corners on Saturday? I think it was Monkichi but no big deal.

Oh, and if I'm not laughing too much, I always apologise if I get someone on a corner.

Haha, wasn't it you who twatted me on a corner, apologised, and then went and did the same thing again about 10 secs afterwards? :D

This has made me look forward to our next game actualy. My girlfriend is leaving for Finland tomorrow so I'm going to spend some quality time with her today but come tomoow I'll be drowning my sorrows on Live.

No, that was the other way round, I'm sure of it... :D . You kept splatting me in Florence, that I know... Possibly.

Like I said though, I did apologise... :P

What's wrong with that? If you're going to race you're going to race, the game's about winning after all. I'd say it was part of the skill involved in playing the game.

Knocking into people on purpose generally isn't on, but people seem to be forgetting how easy it is to take slightly the wrong line and end up giving someone a shunt by mistake.

Basically, if you can't deal with stuff like this you might as well be time-trialling instead.

That's fine. It's people who intentionally run into you to fuck you up that annoy me. And there's loads of them online.

Quite right. These things happen. I've no problem with occasionally crossing the line, and nudges are to be expected while driving fast. I just don't want pushing people off to be an acceptable tactic all the time just because the game itself doesn't prohibit it. That would stop the game being about racing, and turn it into a never-ending destruction derby. I'm sure that's what will happen eventually in public games, but not in friends' games, hopefully The "rules" are whatever we choose to make them. Sometimes the gloves will be off. Sometimes the leatherette driving gloves should be very much on.

Cause and effect. The reason I got pissed, is your little "nudges" sent me headfirst into a wall. It might not have been "on purpose" but you could easily have avoided it.

People DO moan about when the AI opponents do it, why is it suddenly unfair to complain about a human player [with far more discresion available] doing it?

As for the first corner...just like in Moto GP I hate being at the front. Some of the best starts I get are when I'm placed down the pack. What you do is use your brakes VERY WELL, and DON'T smash into people on the corner. If you take it easy round the corner, you can avoid the melee, and often get ahead of the pack.

To be honest I will complain all I want. It's not my fault that people need to smack me about to beat me.

The other night I was on this one server, and this guy started playing dirty. Smacked me off into a wall on a corner (and it was a SMACK), and then as I tried to pass him, he kept shunting me over. This resulted in someone else smashing into me from behind and spinning me round.

I was bloody furious. I started having a go at the bloke, but he didn't say anything...until the race was over and he was 2nd to my 7th. He then said something like "Penguin you make your own shit". Obviously he wasn't happy at me calling him a few names.

So the next race started...I was placed down in the pack on the grid, and did my tactic of breaking a lot...avoided the crashed-up melee and got away from them.

Result of the race? I won EASILY, and the guy who claimed I "Made my own shit" was 20 seconds behind me.

Agreed. I do believe that sometimes these sort of things come about from someone trying to take an inside line on a corner. This can be a viable tactic - underbreaking if the guy in front takes the corner wide, you can get in front of them. However it's risky...

The problem arises when the guy in front judges the corner well...so they turn in wide and hug the edge of it.

Now if you are coming up on the inside, and breaking later, you are invariabley going to smack into the side of them - because they've "Turned across you". Except they haven't...they've kept to a good racing line. You have to capitalise on those times when they don't do this, or why not just sit behind them and draft them on a straight? That's why drafting is in there, to help balance things like this out.

Thinking a little more on this, perhaps it was actually a mistake to allow the break lights to get smashed up on cars in multiplayer mode? After all, it works against everyone.

Anyway, as I said Squirt, it's nothing personal at all mate! It's just that I've used you as an example of what annoys me, as it happened recently...although you will see I've quoted other examples here too. I know everyone here has done what I've described, even me - but I try and control myself.

I love winning a "Pure" race - driving against driving, nothing can beat it. Even losing one to a better driver is good, as then I feel like I've ACTUALLY been beaten by the better man, not someone who is playing dirty. There's no problem for me here - I try and look at his racing line, where he's braked [as much as I can], to try and better myself next time.

At least it's sparked a little debate. ;)

Cause and effect. The reason I got pissed, is your little "nudges" sent me headfirst into a wall. It might not have been "on purpose" but you could easily have avoided it.

How?

If it wasn't "on purpose" then I assume someone made a mistake (ie. braked too late), couldn't avoid you and hit the back of your car going into a corner. I can't see how this is easily avoidable.

I know I'm no saint when it come to this but I'll always try not to bash into the back of people into corners. I will however take the inside line and try and outbreak them, if we arrive at the corner side by side and they can't turn in because my car is there then tough, you should have defended your line.

I try hard not to get annoyed at getting hit on the way into a corner, its harder to judge your braking point when following someone as the visual cues are obscured (you cant see the braking marks on the road because there is a car in the way), especially if using the in car view, like I do. The amount of times I've been told I've put people into the wall that I haven't even seen because they are alongside me makes me wish I had some blind spot mirrors.

The thing that really annoys me is when you get through the corner and on the way out you get slammed into the barrier sideways and see another car zoom off into the distance while you come to a dead stop. That really annoys me and is likely to provoke me into dishing out some pay back. Again I know I'm not perfect and have done this to people in the past but if I get taken out by the same car several times in a single race it really winds me up.

Baiscally I know I'm not perfect and that on occasion I'll screw up and crash into someone and balls up their race. I also know that on occasion someone else will screw up and crash into me and ruin my race. If its really annoying you, go find some other people to race with.
