Prince of Persia

I'd be annoyed thinking that I'd completed Persia without seeing different areas, or missed out half the rooms because of the route I'd taken. It's 'linearity' meant that I soaked in every single fantastic moment of it, without missing a single drop of it's fruity brilliance.

'Freedom' is not necessarily a desireble, needed arribute of a great videogame, (and its a recent phenomenon anyway - a mere 'blip' in the rich history of videogame development) and clearly Prince of Persia shows us this.

Totally agreed. The 'missing out' factor is a worry for me but I'm not really one who enjoys anally wandering round exploring a game world either. So if I can be led through it (without it being totally obvious) and get to see the vast majority of what's on offer (I think the occasional, relatively inconsequential exception is fine) then I'm well happy.

GAME said it was cancelled for the GC.  Should we be worried?

You could see why Ubisoft might decide not to bother releasing the GC or XBox versions in the UK, after getting badly burned on the PS2 version.

Oh, they'd better fucking release the other versions here. :D

Mind you, I'm very close to ordering the US GC version if someone can confirm Freeloader compatability. ;)

My first 3 hours have been bliss. ;)

Brilliant gameplay and fandabidozzy presentation. A real suprise. Again i didn't even think of getting this title until i read peoples comments on various forums.

Might go for Beyong Good & Evil when i'm done with this baby.

Non-linearity is basically a way of helping you out of those 'try-fail-repeat-try-fail-repeat-try-fail-repeat-ohpissoffyoufucker' cycles that games can often have, by offering an alternative to let you hone your skills and approach afresh - or avoid entirely. It's a commendable feature in any game that has this kind of learning curve problem, but thankfully games like PoP don't seem to need it and are probably far better off without it. So I agree with you, and disagree with you, because it isn't always black-and-white like that.

I finished it last night and was a bit upset to find that I had missed the POP1 unlock as well. Still I've heard the Amiga version is better anyway so UAE will be out later.

What surprised and pleased me was how near the end of the game things were arranged to make the battles easier, you'll know what I mean if you've finished it, as I really wanted to get to the end to find out what happened. It's got a great ending for once as well, all in all very satisfying.

I found the storyline simply wonderful.

Especially the beginning of the game right to the end ... those in the know will know

The battles were tough towards the end, especially the one in that circular lift ... I'd like to thank Freeze Time for that one, and then later on it get's even better.

The end battle was quite easy but really enjoyable and a beautiful ending.

Loved it. Now to go get POP1!

Im really looking forward to this, one of the rare occasions when there's an advantage to having a US XBOX, despite the ridiculously massive stepdown I have with it.

PS. Hello to all the old Edge forumites, I've been wondering where everyone was, only just found this place.

I've just got this, and I'm already annoyed.

Only been playing a couple of hours, and it's just so, well, Prince of Persia.

Trial and error gaming, which I never enjoy. Let's try this ledge. Oh, dead. Let's try jumping here. Oh, dead. Let's try this. Oh look, I'm dead again.

Still, early days. Everyone else seems to love it, so I'm sure I'll turn the corner soon.

I hope so fella cos it's a corker. I'm a very occasional gamer these days and PoP is probably an indentikit of a game I wouldn't like but this has had me glued to the telly.

Yeah. Not saying it's shit, like. Just a bit frustrated with it at the moment.

Umm, no. Only got it today. I take it the dagger's good then, is it?

Am stuck at the minute. Really early on - loads of poles, and a statue to climb up. Get half way up, and can't see where to go next. Get bored and annoyed, and turn it off.

Just finished the Cube version having shelled out a bundle on impulse following the praise on this very forum.

Excellent, excellent game. There are criticisms to be made (it crashed :P some of the dialogue sampling was very low and hissy and the Cube just stopped playing sound altogether if you did lots of time rewinds in a row for the duration of the rewind) but they are technical and in any case just seem pointless given how far above the vast majority of products this is. Like all great games, making the main character actually fun to control obviously had so much effort put into it (can well believe the mind boggling number of animations given by the guy in the little documentary) and never got boring. The fighting baffled me initially but I'm glad I persevered as there's lots of subtle touches that reward patience and learning. Excellent script too, very witty and chuckle inducing on several occasions.

A warning about The Wind Waker syndrome though - the amount of times I pressed the bastard left trigger to reset the camera behind me only to have time rewind :) d'oh.

Great to be surprised like this, must surely be one of the best cross platform games of the current generation. Only bought it to fill the gap until Deus Ex arrived but now it's going to have to try extra hard.

Agreed. Get the dagger (kind of the whole point to the game), move on a section or two and it all fits into place. Beautiful.

So, your reason for not likeing the game is directly related to your ineptitude at a section that everyone else cleared within half an hour of getting the game.

I see...

Lol, well said. Personally I just gave the PC game a quick blast and all I can say is it's a stunning, stunning game. Currently at a courtyard with timed jumps needed to get past some spinning saws, It'll have to wait until I get back from work though. Again, it is a stunning game.

Damn. Damn. Damn. Just how good can one game be?

Sure the camera can go a bit over the place and sometimes, just sometimes, the Prince doesn't go exactly where you want him to but the fights and the leaps and the flips and the way you run across the wall ... it's all just so damned fun!

I got it thinking it would be good but I just never expected it to be as good as it is. The storyline is ace and the way the whole thing is put together as a tale being told is just brilliant and obviously allows for the usage of the sands of time.

If only the team that created this had been given the Matrix to do. It would have been so much better.

Quite simply one of my favourite games of the year.

Sony aren't getting my money, the cheeky monkeys. I will wait for my Xbox version.

Tongue in cheek I assume but yeah, don't be put off. I'm not great at games and have virtually no patience. I hardly ever finish games but I'll finish this cos it's so not a chore.

I think it helps that the controls/buttons you use have been kept to a minimum and everything is easy enough to pull off. You're just left with a bit of head scratching, some quality acrobatics and some really decent battles. And it looks dreamy too.

Odd, y'see my L33T Mario64 skills meant that I wasn't baffled for a single second there, I immediately navigated the statue without pausing for a second or giving it a second thought. I didn't even think of it as a 'puzzle' or anything.

Christ, some of the wall running/kicking actions are going to kill those that can't grasp advanced platforming mechanics.

GO ME!

It didn't cause me any pause for thought, and I've never even seen Mario 64 running! L33T, my ass.

Well fuck me, I'm sorry.

I posted my first impressions. You know, I'd just got the game, had developed impressions of it, and I posted what I thought.

We can't all be as fucking brilliant as you. I do apologise.

Cunt.

Oh, and it's liking. This should help.

btw - one very annoying thing about the controls: when you're on a ledge the button to climb up is the lower one, and the button to drop down a level is the upper one.

Very annoying. Other way round makes much more sense. Lower button = drop down, upper button = climp up.

Yes, I know. It was a typo rather than a spelling mistake. I don't make spelling mistakes - in fact, it's my job to to correct the spelling mistakes of others.

I do produce fucktons of typos though - It's my curse. In this case, the post originally read 'So, the reason you don't like the game...', and I edited without dropping the 'E'. Excuse me.

But thanks anyway - especially for the total absence of humour! Toodles!

I see where you're coming from, but the thing is, climbing up is the 'affirmative' action and dropping is the negative.

The control schema fits in with the green 'A' button for accept and the red 'B' button for decline in menus, game controls and everything else.

Can I get a rewind? I'm really struggling to remember a statue right at the start of the game. Can someone describe the section with a bit more detail please (including spoiler warnings, obv.)?
