Kinketsu
Really pleased for them, the first presentation by the Princess was really nice too I thought. I passed out before the result at about 5 am, but people are definitely hyped up for it here now.
Silent Runner
IOC votes today on which sport will join the Olympics - squash, wrestling (which had been dropped) or baseball/softball (which would be making a comeback) Wrestling is in. Stig
I think Japan will put on a great Olympics. Just think how by 2020 how awesome their opening ceremony could be with any new tech they invent between now and then.
merman
Apparently classic film Akira (set in the year 2019) predicted Tokyo would host the Olympics...
Girth Certificate
if the opening ceremony doesn't have a full size Evangelion or a holographic performance from Hokago Tea Time then they've done fucked it up.
glb
Soppy nostalgic post, but BBC One is currently showing the 2012 opening ceremony and it remains as gloriously inclusive and celebratory as ever. How did we go from that amazing summer to this current shitshow of a reality? I am cry.

Ideally without the war but at this point I'm not even sure about that.
Darren
And don’t forget that the Tories objected to the section celebrating the NHS before and during the event.
DC Lemon
I watched a chunk of it last night. It’s impressively timeless as a production but I’d forgotten that this country wasn’t a total cesspit only eight years ago and now I’m sad.
the_debaser
The opening ceremony was a huge whitewash of British history and culture.

milko
Yeah don’t be too starry-eyed, it was a lovely show but the country was busy doing shitty things to itself and others before and during, as well as after. It’s just some of the brexit chickens hadn’t come home to roost quite yet. The home office vans advising immigrants to go home were only the next year, for example.
