Pinball Games - Pinball FX, Pinball Arcade, etc

Recommended Posts

  • 3 months later...

I just bought myself a Flip Grip for the Switch, and ended up buying all the Pinball FX tables for the 3rd time (PS Vita / PS4 and Android beforehand), just coz I had to have them on the Switch.

Firstly I was disappointed that my Hori Split Pad Pro joycons don't work on the thing :(But once I got used to the smaller Nintendo ones again, it really is an amazing simple piece of kit and makes vertical games, expecially Pinball FX, much more enjoyable.

Quick question - there are a bunch of tables missing - all the Marvel ones, South Park ones, Plants vs. Zombies etc.  What's going on there.  And why is Star Wars Pinball a separate game completely and not integrated into the main game.

Lastly, what other good games take advantage of the Flip Grip?

September 28 - I’ve bought a custom-built fully personalised pinball machine/gaming cabinet!

Absolutely spectacular work

Thought the flip grip would satisfy my itch...It just accelerated the craving :D

I kind of went all in on this pinball thing.

I really wanted to buy a proper pinball table to have at home for me and the kids to enjoy.  So I did quite a bit of research over the past month and found that at the end of the day they are really expensive and maintenance is usually a bit of a headache.  So I started looking at the best digital pinball alternatives and found an Australian company called Xtreme Gaming Cabinets who seemed the best ones in terms of what they were offering over their competition.

Basically, I ended up getting their 2in1 Virtual Pinball machine, which comes with a 43 inch main 4K screen, as well as a 32 inch backglass screen and smaller screens which have the DMD (dot matrix display) and other videos that show while you are playing.  The system comes preloaded with an amazing frontend with around 1000 pinball tables (including all the Visual Pinball X, Pinball FX3 and Future Pinball tables), artwork, music, sound effects, etc and there is enough space for you to add almost that many more tables by downloading them off sites such as vpinball.com, vpforums.org etc.

The 2in1 in the name refers to the fact that not only is this a virtual pinball machine, but it also comes with a two player arcade setup with thousands of MAME games and arcade classics.  Vertical games such as 1944, Galaga, etc work on the main screen while horizontal games work of the backglass one.

The table is fully customizable as well - I went with the tactile feedback system and a real plunger with nudge and tilt functionality.  You can also upgrade with things like a motor shaker, solenoids, LED lighting, 3D toppers and even an upgrade of screens to 120 MHz etc.  Just one thing to note if you are interested in ordering - the prices on their site are in Australian dollars, not American :). Unfortunately, there is a bit of a backlog at their warehouse as they seem to be swamped with orders, but I’ve already put a 50% deposit down and should have my machine in around 2 months’ time.

They have a YouTube channel showing off the key features of their systems.  Check out the video of mine for more info:

Since this table was going to be my first (and hopefully only) pinball table, I really wanted to make it special.  My favorite table design of all time is the Big Bang Bar table made by Capcom.

So I searched all over and ended up finding out who the artist was - his name is Stan Fukuoka - and I contacted him.  I wanted one side of the table to remain faithful to his original design, but the other side will be redone as a mashup of famous pinball characters in the same style.  He is currently in the process of designing it and will share here when he has finalized the designs.

After investing in a Raspberry Pi arcade cab last year I'm very tempted by this. I hope it comes with the bread rolls.

Small status update regarding my table artwork if you're interested.

After receiving a couple of proofs from the Big Bang artist mentioned above, I really wasn't that convinced about the way it was going.  My initial brief was to fill up the cab with as many pinball, videogame and arcade characters and the artist just wasn't willing to budge.  Here are his first couple of proofs he sent me:

So after receiving the first version, I started researching other artists that specialise in pinball designs and eventually I found and contacted the fantastic Brian Allen - https://www.flylanddesigns.com/  He already had a plethora of random pinball characters and mashups which I though would look amazing on my table and his style and talent was just on another level IMO.  Anyways, here is the first proof which he sent me last night, and even though there's still some tweaking to do I'm absolutely loving it.  Let me know what you think.

I've followed Brian Allan for a few years, I think he did an Aliens back glass that never made it to production on a machine.  Fun fact; he also designed the Gritty mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Yes, he's amazing - I'm so glad I was able to finalize with him.  The Aliens backglass is an epic piece, which is why I had to include it as part of my table.

Been informed that my table is almost done, so it should be with me before end of April :). A lot longer than initially expected but Covid delays were inevitable.  Will keep u guys posted.

In other news, it seems like Zen Studios is going to be screwing people over.  Their next game, titled just Pinball FX, is coming out for all the next gen systems but has a few major drawbacks:

- The whole engine is getting updated to Unreal, which means better lighting, physics etc.  But it has also been confirmed that you will have to rebuy all the tables!!!  As someone who has supported Zen from day one and bought all their tables on Playstation, Android and Switch, I am extremely disappointed by this.  I definitely won't be buying a fourth time.

- They have also signed a one year exclusivity deal with the Epic game store, which means no Steam for a year!

- All the new tables will not be coming out on Pinball FX3, which is their way of forcing you to redownload everything for their new ecosystem.

Here is their super cringey YouTube show:

Ugh, the rebuying of tables is insane. Especially with Pinball Arcade having all but collapsed. Not sure that's going to be worth the effort. Hopefully there will at least be some sort of discount? I kind of get that redoing the tables will have dev costs involved but... yeah....

So about 5 and a half months after placing my order, it's finally ready!!!!  Here she is in all her glory:

Slight annoyance was that the company building it had a major legal falling out with the artist who produced my custom artwork, so they refused to put it on my machine.  So I went with the Big Bang Bar artwork that I love so much just as a temporary solution.  Once it actually reaches my house, I will have another company here slap on my custom decal on top.

I am so excited for this to get here.  It's got over 1,000 pinball tables on it including all Pinball FX3, VPX, Future Pinball and Zaccaria Pinball tables.  You also have the option to continue adding new tables when they're released.

On top of that, it's got about 15,000 videogames on there - everything from MAME all the way to the latest Street Fighters and Mortal Kombats.
