Off we go! The first of a series of threads to find out what the forum's favourite films are in each decade. Here's the main discussion thread.

Select your favourite films of the 00s (2000-2009) and order them as follows:

1. This is my favourite film of the decade

2. This is my next favourite

3. And so on

4. You get the idea

...

20. No more films after this

Don't worry if you can't choose 20 - that's just the maximum. No merging of trilogies into one entry! Use the main English name and first year of release as listed by IMDb. You can browse films there by year, and Wikipedia does something similar.

Please just list your films in this thread. All questions and discussions in the main thread.

Thanks and happy selecting!

I'm not going to do 20, just however many stand out to me as worth including. The order is very hazy (almost arbitrary, really) but these are some of my favourite films of the decade. Ordering is impossible when you're comparing for example the top 3 on my list which are great in entirely different ways.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2. Control Room

3. Children of Men

4. Borat

5. The Lives of Others

6. The Wrestler

7. Memento

8. The Constant Gardener

9. In The Loop

10. Team America

11. Capturing the Friedmans

12. District 9

13. The Fountain

I'd like to mention Where the Wild Things are and There Will Be Blood; but I don't feel like I can include them having only seen them once and not really solidified my view on them.

3. District 9

4. Old Boy

5. The Bourne Ultimatum

9. There Will Be Blood

10. Team America:World Police

11. Ocean's Eleven

12. In Bruges

13. Iron Man

14. Sunshine

15. The Dark Knight

16. Primer

17. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

18. Memento

19. Moon

20. Donnie Darko

It was quite hard to pick 20 stand-out films for this decade. Shame it didn't include this year or Inception would have been right at the top.

01. There Will Be Blood - The best film in over fifty years and proof that Paul Thomas Anderson is the best director working right now. I know it will appear in a lot of lists so I won't go to any great lengths on it, but I feel it is the most complete portrait of a man since Citizen Kane and flawless in its execution. Milkshake!

02. Dead Man's Shoes - Shane Meadows typically does more down to earth and 'gritty' (hate that word) stuff. But I think his most fantastic film is his best (Considine's writing credit may be something to do with this). It is a Western/Horror set in rural England and works very, very well. Perfect blend of violence (I'm going to shut you off), Comedy (that fucking car) and a really great performance by Considine. Lovely soundtrack as well.

03. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

04. Oldboy

05. Punch-Drunk Love - I love this movie, Adam Sandler demonstrates how good an actor he is and how much potential he has by playing his usual angry-man role in a straight film. lordcookie said a lot of nice stuff about this movie in his post so I won't go over it all again. I also like it because it has a song from Popeye in it, which I thought was a nice way of acknowledging Robert Altman's influence on Anderson's films.

06. Children of Men

07. Let the Right One In

08. A History of Violence - David Cronenberg succeeded in completely reinventing himself in this decade. Moving away from the Body Horror he is known (and loved) for into much more cerebral territory. I thought it was interesting the extent that he has cut himself off, I know there was a deleted scene in this movie of Ed Harris sitting in a puddle of himself, that he deleted it was telling for me of his new attitude. Though he is meant to be remaking The Fly so I guess we'll have to see if the 00s were just a phase for the man.

09. Moon

10. No Country for Old Men

11. Shaun of the Dead

12. The Man from Earth - Not totally sure I am allowed this any more as I don't know if it got a theatrical release. I will gladly fist fight anyone who tries to make me remove it though. A really fascinating bottle drama. It is just people talking about stuff. It is written by Jerome Bixby who wrote a few of the better Star Trek TOS episodes, including one with a faintly similar premise of a man who claims to be immortal. This leads me to believe this started life as a Star Trek story and the script is littered with references to the show and I think some of the characters have parallels with Spock or Bones. It made me think about stuff, like all good science fiction. (Stuff in the film, not what I was having for dinner or anything).

13. WALL·E

14. Spider

15. Eastern Promises

16. Hellboy II: The Golden Army

17. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

18. The Lives of Others

19. Memento

20. Mulholland Drive

Depending on how you like to decide these things:

Twelve films from the USA.

Five from the UK.

One from Korea.

One from Sweden.

One from Germany.

David Cronenberg most represented director with three films.

Viggo Mortensen and Naomi Watts tied as most represented actor with two films each. (I think).

French mockumentary about staging the moon landings - very funny it is too.

Shit, that's made me think of a few other documentaries. Grnnrgh.

I haven't heard of it, probably because it was a made-for-TV film.

Talking about documentaries, I might stick We Are Together in my list but that discussion is for the other thread.

Apologies to Chosty for derailing the topic.

No probs, LC, thanks for spotting them. If anyone else spots a discrepancy feel free to flag it up.

While I'm here, a reminder to sandman and Dreamcastmaster about the Kill Bill rule: you need to update your list so these are separate entries, I'm afraid.
