Hats off to everyone who made this possible and put aside their differences in order to accomplish the impossible. Congratulations RZ!!!

My hat goes off to you.  They killed what Sony Online Entertainment intended to be unkillable.  But rather than actually make it untargetable, Sony just gave it a ten billion hitpoints.  For those non EQers out there a reference scale: a snake has about 10 hitpoints.  A dragon has about 100,000.  A god has 1-2million.  This sleeper thing really does have about ten billion or more.  It took close to 200 players almost 4 hours to beat the thing down into the ground.

Woah. Makes the Mofos vs Dark Falz look like 4 kids going cow tipping. I'm not sure whether to be impressed or to mock their nerdish determination. Probably the former, but only just...

Oh, and contrary to the article, it apparently did drop something...

If it had caused the entire server to crash and lose everyone's details I would have laughed out loud.

Evil! I name thee Evil!

Still, 200, 500, a thousand...it wouldn't matter against Trogdor, The Burninator.

The Burninator pwns all.

 Stop it, you're killing me <_<

Actually...

PSO and KOTOR are the only 2 RPGs I've ever played.

Oh, I suppose I did spend 10 minutes on Grandia II once and there's the now often-repeated tale of my near-legendary copy of Skies of Arcadia being still in its wrapping (and I bought it on day of release, too) but no, never played any other RPGs, even though I get the feeling I'd probably enjoy them. Certainly, from what I've heard of FF Online, SW: Galaxies (after a severely stuttery start) and the upcoming True Fantasy Online, I'd love to give them a go...

Just not enough hours in the day, rubbish PC, no broadband, etc.

Wow what sort of hat?

Supposedly it says 'I killed the Sleeper' when you examine it. Hmmm...perhaps the hat thing is a wind-up. If not, was there just one hat? How did they decide who got it? Did someone grab it and disconnect, laughing maniacally as they did it?

Saw a post from a former EQ player that gives a bit more of an idea what this thing was in terms of bad motherloverness:

As a former EQ player, this is pretty impressive. (I have not played in a year and a half, it got too much like job)

Kerafym, The Sleeper was pretty much considered unkillable. Unlike most creatures in the game, it only spawned once per server. Once you woke it up, it goes on this *huge* rampage, running from zone to zone killing everything it sees, NPCs and players alike. Its also the only creature in the game that can cross zone lines.

I was online when they woke it up on my server, and unfortunately happened to be in one of the zones he goes to.

Poor chap sounds scarred for life. At least tonight, he will sleep well.

Would anyone care to post similar heroic efforts they have made in games? Beating PSO Challenge Mode on DC stands as mine - our team were pretty much the weakest one available and guaranteed a hard time on the later levels due to our low HP and attack power but we were \m/ to the power of 10 and kicked ass.

Your turn!

That would be funny. 199 players going after one with the hat, swords aloft, chasing him all over the land.

Talk about Monty Python.

Pffft, I kamikazed on Dark Falz! He had me in that soul lock thing where every hit he takes hurts you too, and was also proceeding to smack merry hell out of my team mates. I decided "Right, fuck this", and used a Golla Photon Blast which not only took him out, but me too. Ah.

I truthfully think thats the best thing ive read in ages.

As the man said,

"A supposedly PvP server bands together 200 people.  The chat channels across the server were ablaze as no less than 5,000 of us listened in with 'OMG They attempting the Sleeper!"

Thats fuckin great!! Makes my inner geek want to sign right up for everquest! Must.....resist.........

Cheers :::...

Cool.

I thought that the Sleeper had several other 'unkillable' features about it - zone wide random 'death touch', and insanely high HP regeneration, so I'd be interested to read exactly how they did it.

As a test a long while ago I read that a team of GMs who were invulnerable spent ages nuking it with some GM only high damage spell, and they couldn't knock a single pixel off its HP bar, but weapons and spells have probably improved a lot since I played.

I always though that Sony were setting themselves up for a fall by making their 'non-killable' monster targettable with an energy bar.

The ingenuity of the EQ player base is amazing, and a would make fascinating subject for study. There's a long list of similar incidents were the combined thinking power of hundreds of players have worked out ways of using the mechanics of the game (ie not hacking or anything, although Sony still call it cheating) to do things that the designers thought, and intended, to be impossible.

If I can remember what I read correctly...it doesn't actually have zone wide death touch, but it can do normal death touch at a certain period that is deal-with-able.

The high HP regeneration thing seemed to have been set too low for character levels introduced in the last expansion, so basically while it did regenerate, the vast numbers of ridiculously high characters could still out-damage it.

EDIT: Ahhh, I actually remembered wrong. The character levels had been upped, but the sleeper hadn't been upgraded.

Which is a pretty frightening thought.

I'll have a look for the pages where I read this.

Actually it was one linked off the front page of slashdot when they ran the story: The Shadowknight Den, all about the Sleeper.

Anyone got a picture of this? sounds rather sad, 4 hours of your life wasted. what happens when it dies? Nothing? Does it really matter that its dead? whats it there for?

Would all of that not be applicable to any game played for 4 hours? I mean why bother? Do you actually like games?

.::: It's exactly that part which should be encouraged in online games imo. Let players gain influence, let them live and play in that world. Instead all companies ever seem to do is keep them on a leash.

It's a prime example of how impractical gods (like Sony) are for progress.
