Ridge Racer 8

Oh man, this came right out of the blue. I'm a huge fan of arcade racers, but had thought this would be a middling affair to be picked up at 17.99. I might give this a punt on Friday, I think I'll trade Twisted Metal towards it, as that's not really done a lot for me.

No, Marmite is a "love it or hate it" thing. GAMES™ thinks it's above average, but they don't hate it.

It does sound like Edge doesn't care that it's not very original, which is fair enough.

Fair enough, but an Edge 9 typically indicates something a little special, I guess it's just surprising that it's not getting blanket 8's and 9's if Edge thinks it's outstanding.

Yeah, I was just pointing out that it can't be "marmite" unless people either love it or hate it. No-one hates it. Marmite doesn't mean "some people don't love it as much as others".

Apologies for the pedantry.

Well, there was the Broken Sword 3 9/10...

What was the deal with Turok 2? Was the publisher throwing money at everyone? Or did some reviewers genuinely think it was that good because of all the hype? It cost about £50-60 and I saved up and saved up as a 14 year old kid, looking forward to the game to better Goldeneye, and I was fucking heartbroken.

Would this game have scored higher with a different name?

Honestly I'm not sure it would. I absolutely adore Bugbears racing games but I've never got the feeling that they are that successful or well respected by the games press/general public as a whole. I'm not sure changing the name to something like Flatout Unbounded would make a massive amount of difference. I wish it had been called that though to get rid of the shitty smell of Flatout 3.

I don't give a shit about that though, ordered it this morning and am thoroughly looking forward to it :) Decided in the end to order the PC version and rent the 360 version. Not even sure what the PC version is like or if it's even Steamworks but I guess I'll hopefully find out tomorrow. Looking forward to playing it regardless of the version though.

Jesus that looks phat! Split/Second meets Burnout meets Flatout. No idea what it has to do with Ridge Racer

Just caught up with the details on this game and after watching those trailers and I thought I was looking at the sequel for Split/Second. What an odd change of direction for the RR franchise!

It also has hints of Blur.

My copy arrived this morning for the 360 (cheers ShopTo)..

It's a curious beast indeed. Definitely Burnout and all the crash racers (Split Second etc) influenced.

Very tough - first four attempts at first race - top ranked 8th (!) and I think I'm decent at racers...

 I'm reserving judgement...

My first impressions are that it's very tough.

It's also sorta 'slow' on the first level - although I'd expect that to heat up as I get in. Cars have good weight, but drifting neatly is tricky - you initiate a drift with a button, then try and control it with throttle and stick. It's tough, as the tracks are littered with obstacle and other racers.

Track editor is brilliant, I think. Made some daft simple tracks and then was racing around them in about 90 seconds. Clever stuff. And I published the track to the 'interverse' which is also clever. Loads of tracks and 'cites' up there already, and I expect this will be the real draw for folks....

I'm coming at this from a purist Ridge lover though - if you liked Burnout paradise etc - then you're sorted !

Cheers for the impressions. Giant Bomb said that the name could end up hurting the game as it would falsely lure in Ridge Racer fans and deter people who don't like RR.

I'll be absolutely honest here; from what I've seen of the racing in videos this game looks uninspired. It lacks both the sheer speed and pad-gripping intensity of a Burnout title and depth of tactics of Blur. I'm struggling to see what the hook is here to differentiate it from so many other racers. As for the tracks, they just look boring.....very little elevation, all cityscapes, and nothing to make me go, "WOO HOOOO!". It also has a pet hate of mine since the late Burnouts of taking the racer away from the race just to watch a crash you caused. Watching that Giant Bomb Quick Look last night, the guys seemed to think it was ok and you get the impression they were trying to find something great to say about it but couldn't. It looks good, plays well, but is that enough?

The one thing that has shown this could be good though is that video of the track editor. There was a glimpse of what could be some great racing once the community get creative with designing some crazy tracks.

Where the fuck is the postie with my copy! :(

As for the track editor, are there plenty of options unlocked from the start? The reviews mention you unlock more as you progress through the game.. just wondered if its the kind of thing you need to hold off using it until you've completed more of the career first?
