Ridge Racer 8

I played a bit of Flatout last week and even in the 1st few races it wasn't uncommon for an AI car or piece of broken scenery to either smash me off the road or stop me dead in my tracks when the finish line was sight.

That is really annoying. It's the reason why I never enjoyed F:UC as much as many here. It was great online and still looks impressive technically with all the stuff flying about. I'd be concerned about how well the AI works and the quality of the single player before spunking £40 on this though.

Not seen any videos of this yet. Can the track editor do some crazy shit, or is it just linking togther various corners? I would like to be able to set up some cool tracks with lots of vericality/jumps/loops etc.

You will like this then :)

The advanced editor looks pretty damn comprehensive actually... Trackmania + Flatout madness pretty much..

Video here of someone (badly) playing a constructed track...

But if you skip ahead to 3:30 there's a much better run through on it..

The construction of the track shows how you can add a lot more verticality to the game as well as break up routes with barriers etc..

Okay my initial impressions.. are.. erm...mixed.

Can wholeheartedly recommend it to people who enjoyed Split Second, but anyone else I'd ask to think twice.

Good:

Cars are nice and weighty

Drifting is handled much better than expected (the Drift events actually almost feel like Ridge Racer at times)

AI seems nice and competetive

Graphics engine seems to hold up nicely

Bad:

In-car view lovers (like me) beware.. it resets to a default chase cam after each race and I cant seem to find an option to change it

When going around banked corners the incar camera view remains vertical and doesnt tilt!! This is really, really weird and I had to test it a few times just to confirm it wasnt a glitch. Its also a potential gamebreaker for me.

Offers nothing new in terms of event types.. all seems pretty standard i.e. Destruction, Races, Time Trials and Drift events

The Destruction actions you setoff during races arent a patch on split second's

Havent tried the Track Editor yet so cant comment on that, but as it stands, its a good solid arcade racer. I reserve judgement on if it warrants a full price purchase or not.

Having said all that I'll probably be back on here tomorrow proclaming its the best thing ever!! ;)

HOLD DOWN THE DRIFT BUTTON WHEN GOING AROUND CORNERS AND THEN THE GAME IS GOOD!!!!!!!

That, in a nutshell, is Eurogamer's review: http://www.eurogamer...nbounded-review

I'd love to know how he manged to do any Drift events without using the magic drift button.... Also, okay so there may not be a "tutorial" mentioning it, but within 5 minutes of playing I'd seen the button listed under the control options and mentioned on one of the loading screens.

Basically I think the reviewer is either stretching the truth...or hes just a bit dense!

He knew of its existence, but not that you should hold it down. I know of at least one other reviewer who never even found out the latter (not his fault, by the sound of things!).

Fucking WTF!??

Concerned about the AI?

Shit when did you care! Its just super fun ya' great clot!

Whats your name...Meerclown?!

The AI is great. Its meant to be a bit shit because a real race in those conditions it would be chaotic. I really, really enjoyed the SP mode.

Sure it was hard, but by fuckikity fuck it was fun getting to the city and final racing tiers. But i didn't fault the AI once. Some of the objects were a little heavy maybe but when the AI fucked up you didn't really care.

Hmmmm.

I've put just over an hour into this, and I'm not quite sure what to think. If there's a 9/10 game in there, it's yet to reveal itself to me, although that's not to say it hasn't had it's moments.

I did make an effort to make full use of the drift mechanic, but holding it down in the manner described in the Eurogamer review simply spun me 360 degrees, and given the unforgiving AI and the lack of either a rewind or automatic car reset option, messing a drift up can end your chances of finishing in the top three.

That said, there have been two races where it came together well, and I was drifting and smashing through buildings and opponents in fine style, clearing the finish line with ease.

The destruction seems sound, but at this point, I've seen nothing which touches Split Second or Motorstorm: Apocalypse in that area.

I can see where the polarising reviews have come from, and it's far too early to decide which side of the line I'll eventually come down on. I hope to get a better handle on the drifting and handling in general, as my gut tells me that once mastered, there's a great racer to be had.

I prefer this to split second. In that the destruction was happening elsewhere when you pressed the button, wheras here you are directly causing it.

Played about 3 hours tonight and loving it. I like the online challenges and how that is set up. For me, I think that might give the game some legs.

I'd be the first to admit I'm rubbish at these type of games, but when I play an Arcade racer I do like to feel a modicum of superiority against the AI in the early going.

This is completely contrary to that isn't it? I haven't even won a race yet, is it deliberately that unforgiving? There just doesn't seem to be any room for error from what I can see; the AI rarely fucks up a drift. I kept a steady pace behind one of the cars on the second race, and it didn't drop a beat. Nailing every turn, every single time.

I'm sure there's a good game in here somewhere, but whether it decides to reveal itself is another thing.
