Ridge Racer 8

I keep hearing the pc version has Xbox 360 controller issues , like only a few buttons working and not the analogue sticks or triggers?!?

Anyone had this issue ?

Nope nothing like that so far on the PC version. Works very nicely. I'll keep an eye out next time I put the game on in case there's something specific setting it off. It's always good to make sure you have your controller on before launching the game, for some reason some games can get funny with the controller if you start the game first.

Can't wait to get my hands on this.

Well lower your expectations, Mykie, because I've spent a fair bit on this game now and, as much as I think Bugbear have created a great racing game, they've killed the longevity by leaving so much out. It's both astonishing and baffling to me that key things that'd make this a success have been omitted. For instance, having no leaderboards removes any reason to replay a track that you've 3 star'ed. Multiplayer racing is great.....if you're lucky enough to be racing against more than 3 other people. And as for user generated tracks, well there's only the creator's score to beat and even if you do no one will know about it because there's no high scores table. Speaking of user generated tracks, imagine hundreds and hundreds of them all available to race on. Sounds good right? Now imagine that there is no way to filter them, so you have to go into each creator's city, then select a track just to find out what the event is or what difficulty the AI is set to. There isn't even a way to rate tracks to help players filter out the wheat from the chaff.

Like I said, the actual racing is sound and I've been having some extremely satisfying white knuckle close finishes, but something quite major is missing that brings all the elements of the game together to give the player a reason to keep playing. Such a bloody shame, especially as I haven't enjoyed drifting like this in a game since Driver: San Francisco.

Right, I'm off to have another race, and if anyone wants to try to take me on in multiplayer I'll be up for that.

It's a real curate's egg, this. So many positive things to say about it. I like the look of it a lot - sure 60fps would have been great, but I don't find myself missing it while playing, as of course it's not *really* a Ridge game. The way the power system works is really fun - I love trying to be strategic about blowing up the gas trucks to try and take out as many opponents as possible. It's also refreshingly tough at times (which is how I recall Flatout : UC being), and as a result the races can be really exciting, and give you a real sense of triumph f you manage to snatch victory in the last straight, or something similar.

But... a proper tutorial or introduction to the "world" would be good. It desperately needs some kind of leaderboards / Autolog type deal as well. It's all so stark without these two things. The multiplayer setup is a bit clumsy as well. And, despite it being really addictive (at the moment, anyway), I do have niggling worries about the fact that I've basically seen everything it's got to offer after the first couple of chapters.

I do wonder about the omission of full tutorial and leaderboards etc... Namco cutting costs maybe? I dunno.

I'm still enjoying it a lot.. but there's a distinct whiff of "missed opportunity" :(

Im still totally torn with this game... one second I'm getting frustrated to the point of trading it in, then I have a "perfect" race and all is forgiven and I'm back in love with it again. Dont think Ive ever had my opinion of a game vary so wildly from session to session.

Just wish there were more of the traditional style "shindo" races, for me these are where the game really shines! Just being able to concentrate on nailing the drifts, filling the boost meter and fighting for postion without "fragging" every few seconds!

As for the so called "stunt" events, they really are quite shockingly bad!

Its a solid game but it does whiff badly of Burnout. Very badly really. I mean, i like it but i can't help wondering if Bugbear should be better off re-doing their take on Carmageddon. Still they were probably offered a princely sum.

Well I don't really mind that tbh considering I haven't liked Criterions last few games and BugBear have taken the formula and given it their own Flatout spin which works really well. Completed 3/4 cities now and it gets better the more I play it. Had some really close races and the combination of having to use your power at the right time, the satisfaction of the drifting and just the really satisfying handling of the various cars makes it a joy to play for me. This is fast becoming one of my favourite games this year.

I do however hope that they go back to the Flatout franchise and do a game which completely blows away the whiff of Flatout 3. Such a great series.

First impressions really haven't been good. The intro is incredibad. The racing is like... a shitty jerkier version of Burnout.

Still, came first in my first race.

When you get to the sixth race in the first city you're in for a bit of an eye opener :D

Well I've been playing both and to be honest I didn't really have that many problems with the 360 version. Seemed to run nicely and the graphics looked fine too. I'm not one for technical details mind (the only thing that's noticeable to me really is the better framerate of the PC version and of course it looks better regardless)

My double drift technique in action there to get more boost (drift left and THEN right). Thats a hard car to drift too.

One gameplay cock up (and one thats distinctly non-jap) is seemingly you can't drift every corner at full pelt without swiping a wall. In Japan they wouldn't do that.

No I think you're right, I don't think I've ever done a full pelt drift around a typical corner either. I do have one thing that annoys me with this game and maybe it's just me, but have you ever started a race and near enough around the first corner the fuckin AI is using power ? Overall I find the races to be pretty fair (with a little bit of randomness) but I swear I think there's cheating going on by the AI near the start with power. Sometimes I really do wonder how they racked up that amount so quickly compared to how the player has to.

I should add to the above about the technical details that I run the 360 version at 720p as I have no 1080p tv yet so that could help with the framerate too.

I've had no issues really. I mean that race i hammered straight into first and thats on the (my chosen) 4th district. To be honest its one of those games that just doesn't frustrate.

I can come close to 1st, knowingly lose approaching the end flag, reset and sit there and play all 3 laps again with some dumb look on my face like i'm transfixed through enjoyment.

My only frustration comes when i overdrift and come to a stand but i don't really get too frustrated by this game.

To me its an easy one to master but then most of the locale seem to go though each other and you can see corners coming from miles away.

It doesn't have the scale or satisfaction of HP or Burnout P. but i like it just the same.

Sadly theres few moments where you do some jump or crest a hill and the world opens up to some mindblowing vista that really puts your heart in your mouth (like either of the above, or Split second, or even NFS the run).

Its just a city. So thats a bit crap but it does have some nice effects and you can drop in/out to pass a few minutes.

Stick with it Meh, soon you'll get used to it and understand Power chaining and drifting through corners with style, becomes really really satisfying once you get the hang of it. Unless of course you just don't like it which is fair enough.
