It's even got the same sort of logo as Burnout Paradise. I was sad when Burnout became an open-world game. I will be sad when Ridge Racer does the same.

Fortunately there are plenty of classic versions of the series available to play, which still look the business. Out of interest: is RR7 available on the PSN, or is it disc only?

"More Similar to NFS and Burnout than traditional Ridge Racer"

Flatout developers Bugbear Entertainment are taking the Ridge Racer series in a different direction with Ridge Racer Unbounded. A teaser trailer shows Reiko crashing into other cars. "Ridge Racer has traditionally been a game, which appeals to the mass market due to its simple arcade-like feeling. With Ridge Racer Unbounded, it’s more similar to Need for Speed or Burnout instead of the traditional Ridge Racer," said Yamazaki.

"Ridge Racer should be able to try different directions. Even compared to other racing series they have different themes and styles. I believe Ridge Racer can also do this and give players a game with a new direction."

Then just pretend it isn't called Ridge Racer. Pretend it's called City Smash Racing 2011, and then promptly ignore it.

We might get a new actual Ridge Racer one day, but, I dunno... they're all kinda the same. Just go and play one of the current ones again or something?

No way! Why don't you go and play Burnout or NFS? Then we'll all be happy.

Anyway, as Meh said, they're two very different beasts. I wouldn't say it does it better, either. Ridge's is a purposely arcadey, unrealistic style of drifting, where you can slingshot around corners at right-angles at full speed. For me it does drifting better than any other game, with the possible exception of OutRun 2.
