The demo for this is on the Japanese PSN.

It's kind of fun, strangely enjoyable in spite of it's shoddiness . It looks somewhere between Mass Effect and Vanquish (though not as good as either of those)

In what way is it shoddy? The two levels I played at Eurogamer Expo were beautifully polished! (That's how I remember it anyway).

Nowt shoddy about that demo. It's very much a pedestrian Vanquish like i callled it, but still solid and satisfying.

Left wanting more after the gorilla mech fight in the shopping mall.

Shame this got delayed in the US cause i could've bagged the PS3 version while i'm out there. Oh well. 360 when i return.

I don't want to be down on the game because I did enjoy the demo, but it is shoddy, The shooting is fun, but the character movement & control is unpolished, their animation is also really bad in places. Camera controls aren't perfect either. It's not bad, it's just not really near the level of other shooters out there like Vanquish, uncharted or even Mass effect.

edit: I didn't mean it is shoddy overall, like Curtis said the shooting is satisfying, but there is a general lack of polish on the rest of the game.

Vanquish and Uncharted sure I can understand but even from the demo it's a much better shooter than Mass Effect by a large margin. That's in no way a great shooter. Thought the combat in this was really good fun, loved the aggressiveness of the robots and I love the way the plating gradually comes off. Some of the behaviours were class as well such as when I shot one robots head off it just started shooting blindly, hitting some of its comrades. I shot a robots arm off and it then used the other arm to pick up its weapon and start gunning after me again. Hell I shot one robots leg off and it was jumping around on one leg shooting at me  I even had a few of the legless fuckers crawling fast after me as they were determined to get me  Controls felt tight though I do agree the animations could be better but it's certainly made a good impression and I'll be either renting/buying on release depending on how much cash I have. I did notice the framerate getting very ropey at times during the second missions, hopefully that's just an old build.

I didn't mean that it was a great shooter, I meant that BD doesn't even seem to be on the same level the first two "or even" ME2 (I meant to say the 2nd Mass effect in my original post). which is on the lower scale of OK shooters

Infact it quite reminds me of ME2, the robots in that would crawl after you if you shot their legs out (right?) and you've got two squad members that you can order about. Dan even kind of looks like a default Commander Shepard.

Yeah I assumed you meant ME2, I didn't think anyone was talking about ME1 :D

It just felt a lot better than either ME game to me. I've never been that impressed with the combat in either ME game but I was very impressed with the feel of the weapons, the tight controls etc in this. Basically I'd disagree and say it feels like a great shooter to me from the demo I played with a few things technically that can be improved upon. The AI and reactions of the enemies is much better than anything in either ME game as well, something which contributes greatly to the feel of a good shooter IMO. Along with the feedback of the weapons and how they fire, all things I thought were done well. Now of course that doesn't mean the whole game will be great but the demo certainly impressed me a lot.

One thing I haven't tried though is the voice commands via mic. Apparently you can use english in the demo and it's supposed to work surprisingly well.

ME isn't just a shooter though, in fairness.

I tried the demo this afternoon and wasn't too impressed.

The effects of shooting the robots are great but the whole thing feels almost launch game to me. Basic robot models and ragdoll physics. It is a shame that a Japanese developer coming up with a basic workable 3rd Person Shooter system in 2012 is worth comment and also that they couldn't manage to do something similar for Of The End 11 months ago.

I love the Yakuza series despite any of its faults but this to me is totally in the wrong direction. There are loads of shooting games which do pretty much all this does but do it better, with more character and style (not just futurey tunnels, an interesting story, enivorment not being a fully glued down stage, a big set piece not equalling circle strafing a big robot)

So yeah, I thought it was boring.

And just to add, while it is cool to see the Ryu ga Gotoku Studio label on a game, I don't think this will sell well for them. In Japan it is so different from what they have done it has no appeal, and 3rd person shooters aren't that popular even if it was the greatest game ever made. In the West, it's about on par with something like Mindjack.

That's a wee bit harsh there Kinketsu, it's certainly no Mindjack or Quantum Theory. I played those and.....I'm trying to forget  As for ME not being just a shooter, the way the series went it's getting very close to it. Strip out most of the RPG, give a few more dialogue options/choices and have a load of shooting and you've basically got ME now. I think the setting is pretty unique for this as well, afterall how many shooters do you see taking place in Japan ? I'd like to think the full game has a bit more variety in terms of locations as well. It's got a very japanese feel to it so it's not exactly the same as western shooters and that can only be a good thing IMO. As for the robots they're quite detailed, they all have individual panels which you can shoot off, including the bosses, which you then whittle down into pieces. Thought that was very cool.

Well just giving the opinion of a big Ryu ga Gotoku / Yakuza fan who also likes shooting games, I don't think this is really worth people's time. Yeah, shooting the normal robots is cool but like you said about it taking place in Japan, does it really? You couldn't really tell from the levels on show. Blasting the robots to bits is fun but the boss ones fall apart at their own pace. I couldnt't find much original about the game play except from the voice commands, but my mic is in Canada so I used the menu shortcuts like SOCOM and so on, except they aren't really needed because they are common sense AI actions.

The wow point is the foot soldier robot reactions, which are negated by immediately meeting stronger robots, but all the rest is pretty bad in my book. If you look at other great 3rd Person Shooters, the only thing thing one has in common is a some-what working camera. It doesn't have any Uncharted animations, Vanquish pace or Gears bombast. I don't think the bits of impacting your squad through battle commands really have much to do with the game at all. In VC you get really connected to your squiad, not through these odd bits were people seek your approval in wee moments between corridor shooting sections, but because they had characters and specialities that you didn't want to lose.

Sorry, I can't think of anything nice to say about it except that RGGTeam made a working third person shooter.

Well yeah I realise it's very hard to get a sense of 'place' in a demo but I'm pretty confident if anyone can do it it's the yakuza team. You're supposed to be going through the slum areas and the more rich areas of Tokyo as well so we'll see how well they handle that in a shooter sense. I haven't tried the mic stuff yet either, I'll maybe save it for the full game or for an english demo.

I guess we just obviously disagree about the core combat and that's cool. It's funny you mention Uncharted and Gears Of War as even though they have really good core mechanics Uncharted 3 and Gears 3 both disappointed me so much I could fair well enjoy this more, maybe. I realise people will be going 'ey ?' but from an overall point of view I just personally didn't get into those games that much (apart from a few sections in U3 and Gears Horde mode) I'll reserve judgement for the full game of course and it could turn out to be a load of cack but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

TBH I'm more worried about Yakuza Dead Souls. I'll be buying it anyway to support the series over here but whilst I got used to the jp demos controls and could probably manage a whole game I'd rather it was reworked which is supposed to be the case for the western release. I hope.

Played the demo a few times more.

I hope they keep the Japanese voiceovers as an option. the game is really fun, there seems to be a lot going on that I dont quite fully understand yet. the boss at the end of level 1 seems to be absolutely nails, and maybe there is a way to knock his legs off or something that I havent figured out.

I have it down on preorder with Blockbusters for 34.99, cant wait.

Climb up the stairs of the building and you get to jump on the robot's head. Then you have to balance and shoot it's brains out! It's much fun.

Spider boss at the end of the vid is crazy,

Played the demo a few more times. You can annoy the team by telling them things on the mic, I tried all the stuff I know in Japanese, so funny.

Also, shooting the head off robots makes them fire against their own.
