All the best PS2 games are multi-format

(N.B. This follows on from my other thread about multi-format releases)

Out of the 3 next generation consoles, I only own a PS2, but when I think about the games I own, must of them are multi-format.

So putting to one side – Gran Turismo 3, Ico and FFX. What has the PS2 got?

Rez - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the Dreamcast.

MGS2 - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the Xbox.

PES 2/3 - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the GC, PC and will be on the Xbox next year.

Prince of Persia - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the GC and Xbox.

Timesplitters 2 - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the GC and Xbox.

Soul Calibur 2 – (Edge 9) – no, this is on the GC and Xbox.

GTA3/VC - (Edge :( – no, this is on the PC and Xbox.

Burnout 2 - (Edge ;) – no, this is on the GC and Xbox.

SSX3 - (Edge :D – no, this is on the GC and Xbox.

Onimusha – (Edge :( – no, this is on the Xbox.

Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance (Edge 8) – no, this is on the Xbox.

Project Zero (Edge 7) – no, this is on the Xbox.

Dynasty Warriors 3 (Edge 7) – no, this is on the Xbox.

Although a lot of these came out on the PS2 first, if you are looking to buy one console today, that is irrelevant.

When I look at my PS2 collection, what other worthwhile games have I missed:

Devil May Cry – (Edge 8) – Lousy PAL conversion.

Jak & Daxter/Jak 2 – (Edge 8/7) – I guess this would be nice.

Virtua Fighter 4 Evo – (Edge 7) – Not sure the other formats miss this game.

their marketing is unsurpassed which is pretty much solely why they are on top.

bingo.

although there are a lot of weird/niche japanese games to look out for, especially if you have a chipped/import console, and particularly arcade games.

I have a PS2 for Ico I guess. without Ico I wouldn't have bought a PS2, there's no need.

Not sure about that. Winning Eleven 6: Final Evolution is on GC, but that's a (hugely) improved PES2, not PES3. For me PES3 is by far the better game. Plus there's the fact that it looks like Winning Eleven 7: International will have online play, and presumably that means PES4 will too.

I don't think the PES on Xbox rumours are confirmed, are they? I'd love it to be true, but I doubt it'll happen.

Parrapa?

Eye Toy?

EA online?

Socom?

Castlevania - Lament of innocence?

Those Ghouls and Ghosts update? Maximo.

Guitaroo Man?

.Hack?

Dark Cloud?

Disgaea?

Kingdom Hearts?

Rygar?

Siren?

Wipeout fusion?

ZOE's?

I put question marks, because I almost played none of these, and don't know if they all made it to PAL, pretty sure the answer is "no".

I would describe all those games except Guitaroo Man as entirely forgettable or simply average.

On the other hand......

Ico - this is a PS2 exclusive

Kingdom Hearts - this is a PS2 exclusive

Tekken Tag - this is a PS2 exclusive

Virtua Fighter 4 - this is a PS2 exclusive

Gran Turismo 3 - this is a PS2 exclusive

Jak & Daxter - this is a PS2 exclusive

Ratchet & Clank - this is a PS2 exclusive

EyeToy Play - this is a PS2 exclusive

Dark Chronicle - this is a PS2 exclusive

Frequency - this is a PS2 exclusive

Time Crisis 2 - this is a PS2 exclusive

BIG pile of worthwhile PSone games - will play on PS2

Now....some of those games do have equivalents on other formats. However, most of them don't, and sometimes even if they do many people might not consider them as good - I certainly wouldn't swap Time Crisis 2 for House of the Dead, just as an example.

This isn't even going into the few multiformat games that are better on PS2 - even out of your list MGS2 is probably worth getting on PS2 rather than Xbox. It also isn't going into time exclusives like Prince of Persia or I-Ninja, and I'm not even touching games that for whatever reason have additional features on PS2 like some of the recent EA online games.

Bottom line: if you want to take your choice of the best games of this generation's lineup, you need all the consoles, including the PS2.

PES3 doesn't count because a. it's out on the PC soon and b. compared to WE6FE it's gash ;)

Actually it's already out on the PC*, but I kind of assumed this was a console-based discussion.

And I reckon most people disagree that WE6:FE is better.

* And pissing everyone off by being horribly bugged apparently. I'm waiting to see if someone finds a way of making it playable online before buying a copy.

Yeah, but what a Gem this is. Ico is a Revolutionary title, and if promoted correctly, could have a HUGE following.

Well, for a start if you want those all of those multi-platform games, you'll be required to purchase a GC *and* Xbox. One or the other and simply too much is missing. Next, you'll receive the majority of those games considerably later on PS2 (a console which does, actually, have plenty of exclusives). The fact is that if you want a lot of the finest games when they're still new or just don't want to shell out for more than one console, the PS2 is probably the best bet.

I couldn't do without all three, but if I had to have just one, the PS2 would get the nod fairly comfortably.

Even Maixmo or Kingdom Hearts? Maixo is wonderful, then again neither are Ape Escape 2!

Don't be silly, there are loads.

"Onimusha – (Edge ;) – no, this is on the Xbox."

What, you mean the bastard-hard shitty 'Genma Onimusha' game? How about the sequels?

And Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 (two are exclusive), Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Klonoa 2, Gitaroo Man, Ico, Frequency, Amplitude, EyeToy and many other cool party game type things. Dark Cronicle, Tekken Tag Tournament and Tekken 4, Kessen 1 + 2, Time Crisis, Onimusha Tactics, VF4 Evo, Xenosaga, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy X (and 1-9!), Zone of the Enders, Ape Escape, about a billion weird wacky Japanese games, platform games, online games.

The reason they are successful is because, quite simply, they give a lot of people a lot of what they want, and cater to huge audience. And tell people about it.

Ico is lovely, but IMO completely surpassed by POP, which is multiformat

90% of multiformat games go on PS2 first... and it gets all cross-platform games, unlike GC and Xbox.

What's the point in buying an Xbox? All those games are just PC games, except with worse graphics and a shit controller...

Exactly. It's just that there's a misguided hatred against the PS2, a bitterness which extends to them taking advantage of a floundering Nintendo's disgusting arrogance & snatching the #1 spot from them. A generic, seen-it-all-before game on the PS2 is a crime, but when Nintendo blunder in a greater fashion with, say, Mario Kart: Double Dash!! it's an instant classic.
