All the best PS2 games are multi-format

Parrapa?

Eye Toy?

EA online?

Socom?

Castlevania - Lament of innocence?

Those Ghouls and Ghosts update? Maximo.

Guitaroo Man?

.Hack?

Dark Cloud?

Disgaea?

Kingdom Hearts?

Rygar?

Siren?

Wipeout fusion?

ZOE's?

I put question marks, because I almost played none of these, and don't know if they all made it to PAL, pretty sure the answer is "no".

I would describe all those games except Guitaroo Man as entirely forgettable or simply average.

Even Maixmo or Kingdom Hearts? Maixo is wonderful, then again neither are Ape Escape 2!

yes, even those. found Maximo and KH deeply flawed and Ape Escape 2 dull. IMO, natch.

their marketing is unsurpassed which is pretty much solely why they are on top.

bingo.

although there are a lot of weird/niche japanese games to look out for, especially if you have a chipped/import console, and particularly arcade games.

I have a PS2 for Ico I guess. without Ico I wouldn't have bought a PS2, there's no need.

Yeah, but what a Gem this is. Ico is a Revolutionary title, and if promoted correctly, could have a HUGE following.

Ico is lovely, but IMO completely surpassed by POP, which is multiformat

Could be, I'm waiting for the XBox version here.

Is PoP really that good ?! On ALL fronts !?

To tell the truth not every game I play has to have 'edge certification' for ne to buy, play or enjoy it, the Ps2 is nice because it has the widest range of games (whether you class them as pointless or forgettable is irrelevant) and the larger volumes of software sold results in cheaper secondhand games.

;) Plus the really cool games tend to get overlooked anyhow, the Ps2 is great for a cheap gaming fix from a diverse selection.

The multiformat arguement can be used to render any of the machines worthless, so its not a valid point anyhow.

i *prefer* to buy for the other machines when there is a choice but to disregard the Ps2 is pretty much idiocy in my opinion.

Seeing as you have the strangest taste ever and an obvious disliking for the Sony consoles, I wouldn't expect your view to be a common one. ;)

They are different games. PoP doesn't replace it, or surpass it. In the same way that Metroid Prime doesn't surpass MK: DD.

yes. and I would argue that it both replaces and surpasses Ico.

lol @ God calling Disgaea "average or forgettable".

Know what youre talking about before making off the cuff remarks..

I was going to add that I hadn't played Disgaea, but I couldn't be arsed ;)

anyway, is that coming out on PAL?

You wouldn't like it. It's turn based.

I still don't describe games I haven't played as 'average' or 'forgettable'.

some RPGs are good enough to overcome shite (IMO!) battle systems. Skies of Arcadia and Chrono Trigger being good examples.

MGS2 - (Edge 9) – no, this is on the Xbox.

Suckiest. port. EVER. And it was an 8. nd the XBox version (and Substance on PS2 if you want to get picky) only got a 6. And you don't get Document with the XBox version, despite the price being equal to the PS2 version.

And off the top of my head:

Good PSone games, Gitaroo Man, Ape Escapes, Silent Hill Trilogy (yes, trilogy, not "middle game of series" as the XBox has), bemani (well, almost any game based around music), Eyetoy, dozens of obscure games that never come out in the UK (Xenosaga, dotHack, etc)...

Not really revolutionary is it? I'd say it's more old-school in fact. It reminds me of old games like Prince of Persia (the old ones) and Ant Attack than anything else. What's revolutionary about it then? Everything about it has been done before.

As for the first post, maybe you should make up your own mind instead of letting Edge tell you what to think? My personal favourite games on PS2 are the music/dance games and they're all exclusive except for Space Channel 5 part 2.

it's a platformer in and around castles with the odd puzzle and a bit of combat. it's the spiritual successor to Ico. and it does all of these things MUCH better than Ico, while successfully recreating a similar aesthetic.

Do you have to guide a little girl around with you, fighting shadow-monsters simply because they could kill her (rarely you), and form a strangely close attatchment to the bits of pixels?

I've not played PoP yet, those bits *might* be in it...

Can the PS2 be considered a "format"? A plague yes, but surely not a "format". ;)

It has got some exclusives though, and some very fine one's at that. Problem is, with Sony holding such a big market share, it's hard to see why any Publisher would pass up easy money. It's almost the "default" console brand.

If you want exclusive titles - buy Nintendo. For now anyway. :D

I see a lot of PS2 love out there.

I guess I'm thinking in the context of someone that has an N64/PSone/DC and is upgrading this Christmas.

What console would I recommend them buy. What I found astounding is how few major exclusives the PS2 has left. A lot of these titles have gone multi-format or just to other consoles. I'm thinking Resident Evil, TOCA.

(Btw, Silent Hill 3 is coming to the PC.)

I'd forgotten about beatmania games. I guess if this genre floats your boat, then the PS2 is a must: Amplitude, Gitaroo Man, etc.

So when it came down to it, there was a very small list of games that I'd miss if I only had an Xbox or GC for example. I think I listed most of these in my first post.

I would have to add Eye Toy as I have this game and it is a lot of fun.

Of course there are a lot more titles released for the PS2, with a lot more variety. But I assume Hardcord gamer have all three consoles, I'm thinking from the perspective of casuals.
