I see The Hunger Games is £1.99 for the Kindle. Anyone read it, it's sold loads and they're making a film of it. I guess what I'm asking is it's classed as Young Adult fiction, how much pleasure would an adult get out of it? The premise sounds interesting.

Why worry about the fact that it's classed as YA? Download the first chapter and see if you like it :) Nobody is going to think you're twelve

I've heard good things about the first couple of books and then it goes a bit wrong in the third book, but still worth a punt at that price.

For fans of sf and fantasy, a lot of Angry Robot's ebooks are going for a mere £1 on Amazon and are worth picking up. Just avoid Kell's Legend because it's fucking shit.

Not sure if they qualify as bargains as such - if you have a good second hand / exchange type bookshop you can probably pick up the paperbacks more cheaply - but I have just noticed that Gollancz, presumably as part of their big anniversary coming up, are releasing hundreds of "golden age of SF" titles from the 60s and 70s at the end of September - the likes of Silverberg, Bob Shaw, Sladek, Poul Andersen, the guys that got me picking up the books in the local library all those years ago.

Gollancz, the SF and Fantasy imprint of the Orion Publishing Group, has announced: “The launch of the world’s largest digital SFF library, the SF Gateway, which will make thousands of out-of-print titles by classic genre authors available as eBooks.

Building on the remarkable success of Gollancz’s Masterworks series, the SF Gateway will launch this Autumn with more than a thousand titles by close to a hundred authors. It will build to 3,000 titles by the end of 2012, and 5,000 or more by 2014. Gollancz’s Digital Publisher Darren Nash, who joined the company in September 2010 to spearhead the project said, ‘The Masterworks series has been extraordinarily successful in republishing one or two key titles by a wide range of authors, but most of those authors had long careers in which they wrote dozens of novels which had fallen out of print. It seemed to us that eBooks would offer the ideal way to make them available again. This realization was the starting point for the SF Gateway.’ Wherever possible, the SF Gateway will offer the complete backlist of the authors included."

Well' date=' no backlist freebie sf/fantasy yet as far as I can tell in the daily KDP select slushpile, but there's a bonanza of mystery/horror thriller novels and short stories from much-discussed pro-to-self-pub author J.A. Konrath/Jack Kilborn and frequent co-writer Blake Crouch.

At least 30 of their singly and jointly-written self-pub titles have shown up as free on Amazon as part of the exclusive-or-else program, and many of them seem to be DRM-free, for those with other readers who want to give their writing a try.

I have no idea whether this is a planned promotional stunt for the holidays or just a massive glitch when setting the exclusivity settings, but if you want these, pick them up post-haste before they go and change things for whatever reason.

There's no way I'm typing out and linking this many titles, so I will simply provide you with Amazon's "works by this author" links, pre-sorted low to high. Be sure to trawl through all three names, as while there's a good deal of overlap, a couple of the books seem only to be listed "solo".

There's even a freebied translation of one of the freebied thrillers into German, if you want to try out your language learning skills.

Please forgive the self-promotion, and this isn't a recommendation...more of a notification.

I've just published my own novel on Amazon, for Kindle. With some fab cover art by fellow rllmuk'er cowfields. (This is all very strange to me, as I've never sold or pimped anything before.)

The book is an attempt at humourous sci-fi. It's a story about a cyborg called Z14, who, in trying to discover more about himself and the planet he's on, ends up embroiled in the B-movie-like plans of some arrogant, powerful, but naieve aliens. They've got ambitious plans for the humans of Deliverance...well, for parts of the humans, at least.

You can get it at the link below, although I've started a thread in Creative Design, where I say I'm happy to send out free copies to rllmuk'ers, in the hope you'll support me and buy it aftwards (or even take a plunge and just buy it anyway).
