You shouldn't be scared about approaching a group that has been playing for a while (easy to say, I know) if they are looking for players. Most groups I have played with are happy to let newbies join in, and will ease you in gently. In fact, learning the rules from experienced players will make it a LOT easier when you decide to run a game of your own. Ok, you might ask a lot of questions in the first couple of sessions, but these people are geeks, they aren't gonna kick off because you have to double check some rules :)

Not strictly the same thing but sort of similar:

I was pretty worried going along to the London On Board nights with lots of hardcore boardgamers, joining in games I'd never played etc. But I found they were more than welcoming when it came to the rules, loved explaining how to play, the mechanics, what I should be doing, even giving the odd bit of tactical advice.

As a regular GM, I love having new players who are unfamiliar with the rules and/or setting, provided they're willing to learn. It instantly drops the level of meta-gaming in the group and can really increase the roleplaying side with a bit of GM prodding for the existing players to explain things in character rather than out of it where ever possible.

On top of that, it helps remind everyone else of the fun they had getting into things for the first time, before they memorised it all and there was still some mystery to it. I'd urge you to jump in if you're tempted, it's a very rare group that gets pissed off with having to access the rule book - indeed, if the game's fun it's probably not being rules lawyered at every stage anyway.

Been listening to the HappyJackRPG podcast as recommended earlier and it's pretty damn good! Very easy to understand and they walk through a lot of basics as well as talking about more advanced/discussions. Going to subscribe on iTunes.

  • 3 weeks later...

So I've got the 4th Edition starters red boxset and someone has give me £60 worth of amazon gift vouchers. So what should I look at buying next? I want to be a player to start with but eventually DMing is where I want to go. Advice guys? :D

I'd stick to the Essentials line at this point in time. So...

Heroes Of The Fallen Lands

Heroes Of The Forgotten Kingdoms

Rules Compendium

...will more than get you going as a player. And then...

Dungeon Masters Kit

Monster Vault (if you can stretch to another tenner or so)

...should be the first things to buy if you want to DM.

To be honest though speaking with my sensible head on, the first thing I'd be doing is ensuring that I had people to play with. All the above are lovely things but it's a recipe for frustration if you're gonna be chomping at the bit to play but can't find a group.

I played 2nd Edition many years ago and have spent far too much rulebooks (including a shit load on DnD 4e since it was released) since that I've never actually been able to use in anger.

I've decided I'm gonna go to an open night at my local game shop in a couple of weeks and see if I can't rectify that though.

Yes. This.

Don't do what I did any buy every single Essentials book and all the floor title kits - then realise you've got no one to play with

I just wish Wizards would get off their fat arses and actually release the online stuff they promised when 4th edition first launched. We should all be sitting around a virtual table now playing online.

would have revolutionised the game.

would have revolutionised the game.

It's available - http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/virtualtable

But is still beta, I've had a quick play with it. They did away with the 3D tabletop and it's all 2D, but works very nicely.

As for 5E, I just can't see it happening in the next 12-18 months. Essentials only came out the end of last year

I have the latest Core book - it's massive and awesome, real hardcore adventurin'!

Also - @Sirloin - that's a LOT of stuff! How much would you want for it?!

Is it actually worth much? I have a lot, but its all used, and there are bits here and there missing from it. Its all in a box under my bed, I'll have to brave the spiders to have a look at it all.

This is the Microsoft tabletop device shown working with D&D:

Once it's cheap enough for the masses I think it could literally change the way D&D is played the world over. Think of the possibilities :sherlock:

This is the software to go with it:

My link

Filecore from the RG forums showed me this, colour me impressed!

Goodies arrived :D

The Miniatures starter set was only £7 with Super Saver delivery on Amazon, the quality of the figures is pretty fantastic considering they are painted plastic. And you get ssooo much stuff, I even went and ordered the Monster set this morning :)

This D20Pro software is all kinds of awesome. I think this is the way to go if anyone here is interested in some online play:

I'm going to be picking up a fully licensed copy as soon as I learn to play properly.

That does look really nice. Would you be up for playing through a couple of simple DnD 4e encounters some time soon so we can test how well it works in reality? Maybe a couple from the Red Box Starter Set to keep things nice and easy? Anyone else interested in giving this a go? The 30 day free trial should be ample time I reckon to learn how to use the tool and have a couple of sessions so there's no expense if it turns out not to be as good as it looks.

More than happy to DM these initial sessions (or any sessions after that) or be a PC.
