I’ve been checking out D&D beyond to make my new character and, apart from the fact they monetise everything (which is understandable but annoying when you’ve bought a physical book and then either have to rebuy it digitally or buy little chunks of it), it’s pretty damn good. The pathfinder game I’ve been playing for two years was always a bit of a hassle to track spells and items and stuff using a clunky excel spreadsheet, but D&D beyond seems genuinely excellent.

We've been playing Curse of Strahd since the first lockdown using R20 and DnD Beyond.  There's a doofer that connects your DnD Beyond dice rolls to R20 and it makes a *massive* difference.  If you have a campaign going, only one person has to buy a book and it's content can be shared - so we all chip in a few quid each to get the content unlocked.

I nearly said I expected it to be backward compatible. I think 5e has been so successful as a system they should do it. Not even a 5.5e but a refresh of the core books that will pick up a number of changes like footing attribute increases for races (which will be renamed heritages or something similar).

I only play odd numbered editions so I hope it’s not 6th Ed! :P

I think that’s right and been on the cards for a while.

Just doing some reading and it seems that will happen sooner rather than later. A new book, Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse, is out in January and will have: “Over 250 monsters, and 30 playable races. All of the setting agnostic races that have been published outside the Player's Handbook.”

The revised 5e books will be out in 2024 - 50th anniversary of D&D.

Nice! Wonder what random races they’re going to come up with next?!?

My impression is it’s largely a reprinting of a number of non-setting specific races no doubt updated for the post-Tasha’s world.

I think this is the paving of the way for the consolidation of the existing rules in the revised versions for 2024.

Despite being a grumpy grognard I quite like what they are doing and what I think is proposed. Making a really broad rule set with loads of options that can either be a smorgasbord or a pick and mix.

Out of nowhere... :o

It's not a further Exandria source book (though it obv includes additional relevant stuff) but is a full campaign for levels 3-12..

Quote

The greed of mortals has awakened a powerful entity long thought destroyed. For eons, this mighty champion of the gods has been imprisoned in the darkest depths of Exandria. His name has been forgotten, as have his heroic deeds.

Languishing in despair, he calls out for new heroes to save him.

Inspired by the campaigns of the hit series Critical Role, this adventure begins in the Wastes of Xhorhas and leads to the glimmering oasis-city of Ank’Harel on the continent of Marquet, and from there into a sunken realm of gloom, corruption, and sorrow known as the Netherdeep. Above it all, the red moon of Ruidus watches, twisting the fates of those who have the power to shape the course of history.

The cover shows a character with half-orc(ish) features.. but blue skin.. wonder if her parents are anyone we know..?

As a DM I really like the idea of an Exandria campaign - or using Exandria/chunks of it in my current world(I have a slight hint of this now due to various things). This is purely selfish desire as I have watched all of the critical role games and so I have a great resource of episodes to call on. Basically I know exandria pretty well or I can easily recall bits and bobs as and when I need to. It is also a great world built very well. I have way more Exandria lore in my head than Faerun :D

However there is a lot of "canon" baggage to consider as well. In the RllMuk campaigns the faerun my/our campaigns run in is "our" Faerun it isn't as per the lore there are variations and some big differences in timelines etc compared to the "canon". When players have new backstories or something is mentioned that doesn't contradict "our" Faerun then it becomes part of it. I fear if I tried to do that in Exandria there is a danger that, because it is well known by many, it would lead to people saying "well no it isn't like that because we know this from canon".

Do you have the Wildermount book?  I think it’s the only 5e book I haven’t got. Use anything from it?

I wouldn’t be adverse to playing in Exandria even though I’ve never watched/listened to any Critical Role. But I am sure you could port the adventure to our Faerun*. Saltmarsh is in Greyhawk after all.

I don’t know any Faerun lore really other than what I have picked up when making characters. I try to give them a Faerunian context when coming up with them but that’s it.

So I don’t know how much it matters.

*making a campaign World your own is one of the best bits of D&D IMO. The thing I’m really interested in is how the Sunday night adventures affect the world of the Friday nighters and no doubt vice versa at some point.

I don't have any sourcebooks for Exandria but I might be getting them (the original one not by wizards is tricky/expensive to get hold of but I think WIldemount and this new one will cover most things).

Now for the offtopic bit...

In terms of RllMuk Faerun, it is a continent that we have all adventured in but it is only one continent. One of the ideas I have toyed with is what is to the west or indeed to the far east of the continent we know? Canonically I know what is to east of Faeurn (and indeed west but that is very murky even in the faerun lore and isnt in 5e at all) but no Rllmuk party has travelled beyond the fringes of the Anauroch Desert (when defeating Iymrith). As a result those areas could be Exandria and certainly its something I have had in mind recently when trying to dovetail certain backstories from both campaigns and wondering about crossover. Nothing is written in stone yet but I have ideas but if those unexplored areas turn out to be parts of, the whole of Exandria then it woul dbe ours not a "theme park" of critical role land :D

I could reskin it for Faerun as I have done with Saltmarsh from Greyhawk but I am if nothing if not lazy and the reskinning is quite a bit more painful than I thought it was going to be. And I have cut many corners doing it!

As for the Sunday and Friday campaigns affecting each other - there is potential in both directions and in both campaigns there are seeds of certain things which might affect the other :D

Back On Topic

I need to familarise myself with the newer campaign books as there are a few I have missed anyway - nothing for high levels still which is disappointing.

There will be essentially 3 CR RPG books by March..

The Tal'dorei Reborn Sourcebook/Setting (a revamp of the Green Ronin published one from 2017* - but extensively rewritten & doubled in terms of page count/content. Should be released under CR's own Darrington Press label late this year or early next..)

The D&D published Explorer's Guide to Wildemount Sourcebook/Setting.

The D&D published Call of the Netherdeep adventure/campaign.. which will include some setting info for the continent of Marquet (also where campaign 3 is due to start next week..)

*It's HOW MUCH on ebay?? Damn, my copy is signed by most of the cast too..

Are we going to start turning up to a village and find it already burnt down? :(

Does anyone else stream their D&D sessions? Did my first stream last week and it was a really interesting experience. We had a few technical challenges, but it was a lot of fun overall. Went from a bit nerve wracking to feeling like our previous zoom sessions, mostly.

I think we all found having even a small audience meant we had to be that bit more mindful, actively involved and just that little bit more on our game.

We started playing during lockdown and started with Lost Mines, as I imagine most do. Our DM has really gotten the bug and we now have a homebrew campaign on the go.

Would be really interested if anyone has any good tips on streaming D&D.

@Bobby Digihill Have everyone on camera and everyone on screen. Make sure the DM actively involves everyone and is especially mindful of people not joining in, especially during RP. Make you combat descriptions more interesting, instead of just saying “I cast smite” say something like “grabbing the holy symbol around my neck, I utter a prayer to Iomedae and shoot forth a beam of holy light to the goblin”. Instead of saying “I hit it with my axe”, say something like “I tighten my grip on my axe, let out a mighty bellow and swing at the zombie with all my might, bringing the axe down in an arc”. This is way more interesting for people to listen to, more fun and cinematic. Doesn’t haven’t to be for every single action, but pepper them in.

This in turn will give the DM more to riff off of; let’s go back to the axe example. If you say “I hit it with my axe” but you miss, the DM might just say “you miss”. But if you give the description of what you did, the DM can say something like “the zombie hears your mighty roar and it gives it the split second it needs to see you axe coming towards it and raise its shield. The axe catches the rim of the shield, denting it and sending some splinters flying, before gliding off”. Then you can respond to this instead of saying “action surge I attack again” you can say “Seeing this, I use the momentum of the missed swing to spin the axe around again in a wide backhand swing, trying to hit the opposite side to the shield to get behind the zombie’s guard”.

This kind of thing will make it way more interesting than:

”I want to hit it with my axe”

”roll to hit”

”14”

”that misses”

on to the next person and so on

Good tips, thanks!

I'm very mindful of the balance between "I do a thing" level descriptions and trying to be Critical Role!

We've been using zoom for the on camera bits, we did a test with Discord, but that seemed less flexible. Apparently our DM is looking at another solution for us to have direct feeds from the camera (if someone's connection drops or camera is switched off zoom rearranges the windows, which is messing with overlays, right now)

I'm really glad we waited unitl we were settled in to our second campaign before considering this, our first campaign characters started with a very 'kill everything attitude', especially at the start.

So Transformers went with Michael Bay. OK, tough luck. I also like D&D though so maybe the upcoming TV series will have better luck in the director/writer departm-...

The writer, director, and producer of Red Notice, Netflix’s most-watched film, has a whole new world to play in. Rawson Thurber has been hired by the studio eOne to “creatively oversee” a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series. He’ll write, direct, and executive produce the hour-long show, which doesn’t have a network set to air it—yet.
