Saints Row The Third

This is soooooo good. Only done a couple of the opening missions so far, but even early on it is so full of goodness.

I did laugh during the opening when

Mid way through a bank heist I stop and start signing autographs

Aye!

SR3 was released down under yesterday - as was Halo Anniversary obviously - and I came home with my swag of the year! Yes, it hurts that Master Chief is still ensconsed in a film of cellophane but NOTHING could stop me from unleashing on the streets of Steelport! After spending inordinate amounts of time tweaking my avatar, it also hurts that I could not download her from THQ's website! Why? Because I'm one of the e-tards still clinging to console tech and the PS3 web browser can't log into SaintsRow.com.

This also means I can't access nor share my community photos, so that feature is null and void for me whilst playing. A good thing that SR3 embodies the stuff of legend. What the reviewers don't tell you is that the game truly puts its best foot, Shark Gun, or dildo bat forward when you amp up the difficulty. I'm a SR2 Hardcore veteran, and simply breezed through the opening act. Ha, so this is SR3 Hardcore? Oh noes, have Volition dumbed it down for the masses?

No, no they haven't. You need to start playing for keeps. You need to start upping the ante when the moolah starts rolling in. All your abilities and buffs (and pretty much everything else) is managed from your in-game/pause menu cell phone. I made the fatal mistake of trading a wad of cash for fasttracking six levels of respect. That's all well and good should you be racing through campaign, ostensibly if you were in 'review' mode, but after eight hours of play I suddenly realised there were no consumable health items, and no Forgive & Forgets.

When you're in the thick of things, you need to think on your feet. In this respect, SR3's Hardcore is every bit the emergent pit of death. Much akin to Halo's Legendary, whatever can go wrong will go wrong. It's not enough that you skilfully swat down two-score and seven gangbangers while returning fire from aggrieved bystanders (which may or may not include Steelport's finest). You've then got to REVIVE your homie - holding Y temporarily leaves you vulnerable - while that attack chopper you've so skilfully averted in the interim exacts a restart. But it's so deliciously punitive... one more go means you'll do better next time, right?

In respect of the fidelity of the world, it helps that you can tweak gamma and brightness because the opening act is very dark (well, quite apart from the lightness of its Michael Bay setting). The streets and ambience and general sheen of the vehicles evokes Mafia II levels of grittiness and the unsurpassed character animation is by far a series highpoint. While others get their 'freak' on by reanimating the corpse of Hitler (see previous posts), I authored a buxom-bodied porn star. 3D Realms may've scratched an itch with their topless strippers, but NOBODY does cameltoe like Volition!

Of course, eight hours in is just the tip of the iceberg for me because I set out to unlock locations first and foremost. Hmm, there must be more than the meagre 30 or so I've discovered? Speaking of itches, thoughts of playing even more SR3 - with the weight of anticipation now lifted - continue to tantalise. Choosing that femme fatale has already given me one hand-on-heart moment... not only does she speak voluptuously but she can certainly hold a tune. It's not for nothing somebody waxed lyrical about "relaxing" with Frankie Goes To Hollywood. And there's Faith No More's Epic too.

And that pretty much sums up my thoughts at this point. There is no hype. Just belief. And by all means believe the 'Metacritique' because the numbers don't lie. Saints Row the Third is Volition at the top of their game!

Even though the above sounds like the cocaine-fueled ramblings of a sleep deprived maniac, it's exactly what I was hoping to hear!

He's applying for a job at Edge innit :)

I'm annoyed this is coming while I'm balls deep in Skyrim. Especially given how much I loved SR 2. Too many games!

I bet the censors had a field day with this.

I'm thinking of waiting outside the government offices on bin day. However, I like to think that it got such a hammering that to avoid another getting their grubby mits on it, somewhere in the UAE a loan Saints disc is buried in the desert. Sleep well, sweet prince saint.

I don't have any other major gaming obligations at the minute; Zelda is on the downstairs Wii, Skyrim won't be mine until Christmas, I'm done with Batman Arkham City and this will be a lovely lighthearted alternative to the relentless Dark Souls which I have on the go. My body is ready.

I have actually created a damned monster. We got another copy of Saints Row 2 on Saturday so we can play it through some of it in co-op since he took this week off work, and since Sunday night that is all that Unspec has been playing, starts at like 9am and didn't finish until around 2am. He hasn't even bothered getting out of bed now, just woke up and started playing it  Quite impressed that despite owning it for the past 3 years with him showing zero interest, he's gone from that to perhaps looking forward to 3 as much as I am in a matter of days.

My Tesco order hasn't even changed to processing yet, and one of the games somehow cancelled itself. Had to change to The Hut, who I've never used before.

Grk.

The Hut have been fine when I've used them. Will probably use them more in the future because their prices are generally pretty good.

The Hut run the Tesco website. If you ordered for £28, you were better off waiting as some people have got theirs today.

There was some weirdness through Tesco - one of the games cancelled itself, the price remained the same and it hadn't even been posted by the time Moose had his in his hands.

Was kind of freaking out, then I heard Markholl mentioning his order had been shipped from the Hut so I swapped over.

Shopto's always been great for delivery speed, but £42's inexplicably expensive when I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

I think I may have dropped a rather large bollock by ordering this on PC :(

Reading on another forum a guy who has an overclocked i7, SSD and a 6990 and he says on max settings, it drops to around 20fps when things get hectic. There is no way his comp should even break a sweat with that spec, running the game at the resolution he is, nevermind grind to a virtual standstill.

Fuck weasels. That'll learn me for trying to save a tenner <_<
