Ultra Street Fighter IV

Remember when Vanilla had no lobbies? Man, that was crap. Took a while before it was patched too. A lot of my mates who had been looking forward to SFIV got pissed off and stopped playing long before it got patched. I reckon lobbies would have gone some way to keep them interested. Oh well. Maybe Super Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will have lobbies from the start.

^Cheers, whats everyone's training like?. I do warm ups for 30 mins and then do the trials again with Akuma to the level I'm currently on. Been watching more combo vids from LordUltimita I think which is a fantastic source for Akuma noobs like me.

Jump right in, get smashed to pieces, change character and repeat until something seems to work. Inevitably try a new character, fluke a few wins and post in here about how they're the best thing ever. Get to 5pm, start swearing loudly at lag and ragequit.

So, I played a little bit of AE, and here are some impressions:

First the set up at Casino:

1 Electrocoin Machine (looks like a knockoff viewlix), 2 set of controls - fully Sanwa but a bit battered, 1 credit for £1. Currently set to a maximum of 4 wins in a row. On the 5th win, both players are off. Evil Ryu & Oni are not unlocked.

First thing I noticed is that there was a small crowd round the machine, and man, it was a little ripe down there. Nerds playing arcade games in a fairly warm place all wearing winter coats? Not a fan of this.

Anyway, I spent my first go as Yun... fighting.... Yun. He's got some lovely moves, and a great bnb combo that even works on crouchers -

Dive kick c.LK c.LK s.LP s.MP x Up kicks / Shoulder / Dash Punch. I'd say the up kicks were the best combo ender, as it spaces them nicely to continue dive kick pressure. I also saw a great punish combo -

c.MP c.MP s.MP x whatever special. This does a tonne of damage.

I managed to lame out a win in my first game, but then another Yun got on the machine and destroyed me. I've noticed that spacing the dive kicks is really important as you can't just mash out c.LK when you hit the floor like you can with Rufus, so you have to make sure the opponent gets hit in order to safely follow up, otherwise you're very likely to be thrown. It's also pretty bad for Yun to be on the receiving end of some solid rushdown, as he struggles a bit with get off me options. Though, as a counter to this most of his moves seemed very safe when well spaced.

I didn't play Yang as I'm terrible with rekkas and his wake up game looked even worse since his DP is weird.

I did play a little Akuma, but got destroyed by this really good Yang, and a really sick Vega, who was abusing a kara throw I didn't even know he had!

I had some good times in player match in Vanilla.

I loved the limited range of communication the smiley faces provided.

'limited' ??? that was the most communinative I had been for years and then they removed them and I retreated back into my shell. I miss my happy/angry face. I couldn't even find them on the internet

Imp sorry I couldn't make Casino but extremely busy at work at mo.

It's a great combo to learn to use Negative Edge with.

In Street Fighter you can perform special moves by releasing the punch or kick button instead of pressing it, sounds mad but you can try this in training with a simple fireball on its own or something. This combo is also a cancel which means timing is generous too, try:

Crouch and HP, hold HP, then quickly roll forward and release the button to fireball.

Feels awkward at first but it becomes second nature after some practice. You can do the same thing with crouching medium kick to tatsu as well if you're a bit further away.

That latest excellent adventures is the best yet^_^ Good games to all tonight, apologies for my horrendous dudley. Right, i'm off to have nightmares about grasping a professional streetfighter player's swollen, felty tongue... mitten style.

also, dpi and pockets, what's your gamertag?

Ah, no probs man, it was a bit whiffy there anyway. And full of pretty damn good players!

Excellent work to everyone involved in the lobby(ies) tonight. Zangief-Abel is truly a 10-0 match up.

Cheers to Jonster and Lyrical Donut for the games earlier, not played you in ages. There was a funny moment in a match with Lyrical, where my Vega landed a knee on his Dudley's cross counter (? counter hit thing anyway) - the knee won the round and the game froze with just the tip of Vega's knee grazing Dudley's chin, held in that pose for a few seconds and then Dudley went through the full animation before groaning and slumping to the ground.

How many times did I fall for overhead -> throw?! Waaay too many times! I did manage to tech it once or twice after about 5 wins though :P

Nice to get some practice in against Claw - such a pokey motherfucker! Horrible damaging combos too. I look forward to fighting him more!

Props to Jonster too, and Imp's random trolling :)

Oh and Casino has always been known for the 'heady' atmosphere. £1 a credit though! Back in my day it was 3 for quid!

During your brief absence, Jiro has had such success with that Vega shenanigan that it is now a lobby staple dubbed "the throwverhead". If you watch my inputs against Jiro, you'll see me tech 66% percent more often than in any other match.

I still get thrown though.

after last week it would be rude not to, really.

that excellent adventures was indeed awesome. at about 10-12 minutes in i was totally broken.

i spent ages (okay, 20 minutes) yesterday trying to do the most infuriating trial.

sagat trial 20: cr.MP xx low fireball xx focus attack (uses two super bars, connects for crumple before you dash out) > cr.MP xx tiger knee.

it wasn't so infuriating simply because i find it stupidly difficult to do the focus attack for long enough to crumple without leaving it so long it doesn't combo. no, i'm not going to complain about that. nor was it so infuriating because that cr.MP is so liable to whiff during dan's crumple animation (even with a dash out of the FA). no, it was infuriating because, were the super meters not set to auto-refill in trial mode, i would've landed the combo about a dozen times, but because they auto-refill then they were full again by the time i got to the end of the combo and i kept getting the super instead of the tiger knee. so, so tedious.

Once people are trying to tech the throwverhead you can mix it up with his slide for a knockdown and start all over again. His j.HP is nice in there, if you time it right I think it's a safe jump in and it forces them to stand. Lyrical - that's a nice Makoto you've got, I'm always impressed by how scary she is in good hands when I play her she's a shambling wreck.

My copy just arrived, been getting used to the basics. really enjoying it overall. I joined a ranked match just to see how badly I'd be get beat, and I only managed one punch, haha. If anyone wants to adopt me and give me some guidance it would be welcome but I guess the best thing is for me to stay offline and learn the combos and stuff.
