Ultra Street Fighter IV

Alistarr, potential ironing entertainment for you.

The top 16 matches from the "Crossroads" central California tournament from the other week are up on LevelUp's Youtube.

Tatsu's Vega is always worth a watch, then there's two legendary Ryus in John Choi and Alex Valle, the central Cali underdogs Mike Chow and XsK Samurai, the mighty Vangief, Ricky Ortiz, Filipino Champ, Crizzle and Lainysky's Vipers, AndyOCR's best Bipson, LPN maining every character and L2P laming every character. A good mix all in all.

The only big downer is that Ricky refuses to counter-pick Cammy against Filipino Champ, because that guy needs some beatings.

Their "Arcade Edition at Round One arcade" series has some nice high quality AE footage as well. Alex Valle playing randoms and if he loses a set the winner gets a mug. Heh.

The goods are all here:

My PC at home is very unwell at the moment, so others will have to watch match videos on my behalf. It is the saddest thing.

Man, I feel for you, you'll be so hype when you get to see Marn beasting with Yun at the level up anniversary tournament when they go up on youtube.

Got some Streetfightings in this weekend. GGs to all. Particularly noteworthy was the 5AM lobby with Mr. Lyrical Donut. I have missed that Makoto a great deal, and it allowed for more Sak vs Mak, which is the most fun.

Yeah, those were some GeeGees fo' sho'. Cross-under / mix up hell :)

Should have my TE sorted out this week, so I can mic it up again.

Also, FADC knife pickup has to be the most gloriously wanton waste of meter I've ever seen.

clearly you weren't in the lobby when i astounded* carlito the other day with an inspired uppercut FADC doubledash crossunder. in years to come they'll call it the mariokart combo.

*he may not actually have noticed.

They're either counter hits or extremely situational/character specific, but I think the main thing to take away is that they're all sexy as hell. Cody combo videos are always great though; he has so many weird properties going with juggle states and things changing if he has the knife etc. Ryan Hunter came up with a safe jump set up with the knife not long ago that works against every reversal in the game aside from Chun's Super.

The set up with focus crumple, jump back, EX ruffian, ultra 1 in the corner was so lovely that someone has to do it in a lobby.

Did we sae this the other week? I forget. It's one of Maj's tool assisted combo videos, but it's just so creative and pretty with all the juggles. Some of the full screen catches are inspired. It's from Vanilla IV because he started the bi-weekly TACV series with that game, but still great:

When cale reads this, cale is going to laugh.

Hee hee. 'Batch'.

I do hope to play some games tonight. SF shaped games. I tried to cr.mk x ex. tatsu, Ultra in ilomilo the other day but it just made the camera go funny.

Big props to Goemon and Donut's MakMir© vids. I learn something new about Ultra 2 every time I watch Donut. Crazy.

Got my Hori EX 2 this morning and I'm already better with it than with the pad (which says more about my pad skills than anything). Struggled against Cammy on normal arcade but beat the rival and seth first time. This makes the game come alive, well worth the investment.

I hate CPU Cammy. She's always a right pain in the arse and probably part of the reason why I stopped playing Arcade Request mode, because if you can't even survive long enough for a new person to join your game...

Thanks to Pockets, Lyrical and Cale for the games last night was good fun :)

Really enjoying using Juri atm. Had my first match in ranked last night with her, against a 2,400BP Ken, and won. The guy sent me a message afterwards saying "That was my ass and you just handed it to me" I was expecting something rude as I pretty much just spammed c.MK -> LK Pinwheel!

Aww. The compliments are nice. Not as outright hilarious as the hate mail, but undeniably nice.

One thing about the CPU I've blabbered on about before is that the AI on hardest can teach you some very useful things about a character. A lot of what they do is random and nonsensical, so it's not great practice generally, but for specific tips it can be handy. For instance, I put it on hardest and played as Rufus the other day. I found that doing a low dive kick and then immediately doing another one causes them to block the first one and then completely shut down the second. Essentially this tells you what your anti-dive kick option select should be with that character because the AI picks out the perfect response to stop you spamming it. If you play the AI enough you will see some godlike unorthodox anti-airs that you may not have considered before as well.

Hey Jonster - I got your party invite last night, but was just having my Viper smacked down relentlessly by Cale's Abel before I went to bed.

Tried to find your name to reply after the games as your message had disappeared and you were nowhere to be found! You aren't on the RLLMUK tag for SFIV or Blazblue, I couldn't find you on people's friends lists! YOU ARE A GODDAMN GHOST!

I'm sure Jonster's on my list. Perhaps he appears offline like Joffles.

I've a request pending to the SFIV tag atm :)

Does the 360 remember between power ons how you've set your Away/Busy/Appear Offline status? I changed it to the latter a couple of nights ago while using Sky Player but figured it'd change back automatically.

I thought it changed back automatically.

Sorry for the no-show last night. Had a few games in ranked when I got home (sorry for bouncing your invite blipwoo but I wasn't around for long) and when wifeybedtime rolled around I was just too tired to play anything too adrenal so just kicked back with NBA 2k11 for a couple of hours. It's still excellent but needs more fireballs.

Big cheers to all last night: Jonster, Donut, Pockets, Carlito and a fleeting ranked loss to The Kron. It was great to have a lovely rllmuk sesh.

Started off with ten or so matches with Delores, 5 of Abel vs his Viper battles and I won all of them but not even remotely comfortably. At least one match came down to invisible health it was so close and I think it’s fair to say that even in its embryonic stage Carlito’s Viper is a tricky little thing. If she wasn’t made of wet tissue paper then I doubt it would’ve been a clean sweep. Had some fun ol’ ding dongs afterwards too including an Abel mirror which he won and with more flash than I’m currently capable of producing. One day…

Then a little mini lobby with Donut, Jonster and Pockets. Nice to finally play the latter two. Jonster’s Juri had me in all sorts of trouble with cr.mk x pinwheel being mixed up with throws – plenty to think about there. And then Pockets’s Juri debut took me down in a close match. Was fun. After those two gents left Donut and I had a wicked session which culminated in a few surprisingly epic Makoto v Gouken scraps. I had no idea that match was so much fun. Thankfully Donut had the common sense to call time about 12.30 because despite wanting to log off an hour earlier I couldn’t stop pressing the start button.

Street Fightah!

Quick question if someone would be so kind?

Twice in the last few days I've started an endless lobby, had a fight or two then sat back to watch others fight. During their fight I've been called away and had to switch off the box. Will this have screwed the lobby (as I was hosting it)?

Hopefully it will continue without me and not inconvenience peeps?

Trying out Gen now, I swear you have an advantage online simply by picking him.

His EX kicks thing is priceless, as is (Crane) cr.LK , Ultra 1

Oh you do. He's one of those characters where a very basic knowledge of what he can do will take you a long way because he's so alien to most players. I have an absurd ranked win % with Gen, and you'll find that the genuinely good Gen players are often terrifying. It also helps if you're in a random select lobby. There's something to be said for learning obscure characters and being the only guy who doesn't go "oh shit" when you get Gen, Hawk or Hakan. I've done this to some extent (and with those three mentioned), but Joffo is taking this concept to the next level with Covered in Bs.

Re: lobbies, if the host leaves during a fight then everyone gets chucked back to the lobby screen and they have to restart the match. If you can, try and leave in between matches and then it'll sort out a new host. If it's not convenient then it just means the current match will be written off, which I guess is only a problem if you're right at the end of a nail-biting lobby classic.

So, I had a thought.

We all play Street Fighter, right? And we play each other in lobbies and stuff and I think we've got a pretty good picture of who the best players are on here. But that's in Endless, and often random select, and people are talking and often drunk, and, well, I was playing NBA 2k11 last night and the range of stats you can look at on that is dead impressive. Rankings for everything. Americans dig that shit, I know, but still, it got me thinking.

How could we rank ourselves?

If everyone posts up the stats from their player data page, I could collate them all, and by dividing a player's various stats by their time played, you'd get an average stat per hour played. You could then put them in some kind of order, perhaps a descending order, giving a list of players in order of their various prowess at a given thing, something I am choosing to call a 'chart'. The person who is at the top of this 'chart' could be called 'number one', 'chart-topper' or even 'winner'. Imagine, if you will, the possibilities.

It wouldn't work for win percentage, but I'd be able to do rankings for just about everything else on the list. Joffo has been playing the longest but is he the most efficient, in terms of average wins per hour? Is carlito really king of the chip? Who's got the most perfects? Ultra finishes? And so on.

It wouldn't take too much work at all and would just be really interesting I think. If regular players and posters want to post up their shit then I'll get it done.
