A thread for PS3 owners here 2011

It happened again, and not fancying the idea of going through that every time I want to play those games I decided to change the CMOS battery.

There’s a guide on ifixit which looks not too bad. You take out the power supply and bluray drive and then the battery socket is right there. Not so on my version (CECH-2500A). I had to take the entire thing apart right down to an empty plastic shell, because the battery socket is sandwiched between a metal cover and the motherboard itself. The two are screwed together with various cables and things woven through them.

The worst part is under the bluray drive itself, which unlike the one in the guide has an extra ribbon cable directly under the drive. Reattaching this is a nightmare as there is very little room for your fingers to manouevre as well as holding the drive in position above the socket (the cable is short).

There were a couple of hairy moments reassembling everything as various parts had to be flexed to allow things to fit back in where they are supposed to go. Happily everything now seems to be working although I’ve only tried digital games so it’s possible the drive is knackered. Not the end of the world as most of the PS3 exclusive stuff I want to keep it for was digital anyway.

The date thing has come up before, didnt Sony update something to stop this happening - as in they were on course to let systems not be viable simply due to the real time clock failing. Maybe it was PS4 but either way im certain it was solved with an update - is you’re PS3 updated @Darwock?

And as ever, can’t have a post about a PS3 without mentioning the awful pad, my god it haunts me how bad it was - yes, even the Jaguar pad was better!

Yeah they only updated the PS4 software, which annoyed me at the time as the PS3s were much more likely to be the ones with dry batteries. My PS3 is all up to date.

I just remembered something I wanted to ask about - when I separated the metal casing from the motherboard that also required taking the fan off, and that meant separating the two surfaces that had thermal paste on them. It looked very dry. I just put it back together, but is it any more likely to overheat now that I’ve exposed it to air?

Decided to setup my old PS3 Slim, as I had the urge to play the Sly Cooper games again.

I forgot how many PS3 games I own, with my library at around 25 physical games so might keep it hooked up to the TV for a little while.

For those that are playing on their PS3s in 2023 I highly recommend picking up a Mcbazel Brook Wingman XE Converter. Being able to play PS3 games wirelessly with a Dualsense controller is great, so much more comfortable then planning on the old DualShock controllers in my opinion.

Is that the right link? The description says it’s for using PS4 controllers on an Xbox. Dualsense is the PS5 controller isn’t it? On a PS3?

nvm, it’s in the fine print.

balls, that seller doesn’t ship overseas

With PC at least, I think when you 'break the seal' like that it isn't good for cooling and you should reapply thermal paste.

Second disassembly/reassembly is finished.

It felt worse this time because I also took off the wifi/bluetooth antenna connectors so I could more easily clean off the old thermal paste, and reattaching those feels a bit imprecise (like I’m not sure if they are actually connected again).

(edit - hooked it all up and loaded a game from disc, everything is working short term at least)

Also I had an unexpected issue as there were these two soft, slightly moist and sticky rubber pads on the inside of the metal shield, and one of them fell off when I opened it. I had to guess where it goes because there aren’t any pictures on the web, and I don’t know what they are for.

I’ve attached a pic, does anyone know if these could spell the end for the PS3 if they are installed wrong?
