It's a bit depressing seeing these big companies launch their doomed music services. What was Sony's called - qriocity? The one where you had to spend a few seconds not so much reading the name as decoding it? I mean, I understand why they're trying, but I kind of wish they'd just let Spotify launch an app and take a small royalty from them, rather than spend millions on their own wonky projects.

The portable console war in Japan has always favored Ninendo's 3DS over Sony's Vita, but never quite like this.

Last week, the Vita hit a new all-time low in the country, selling only 4,021 units. By comparison, the 3DS sold nearly 47 times that many, at 187,077.

The numbers only tell half the story, however: 3DS sales were bolstered significantly by the release of Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which debuted at number one on the charts with 721,786 copies sold.

Still, it's clear that Sony is having a very difficult time selling anyone in the country on the Vita, and a lack of desirable software in the region isn't helping matters. The Vita had no new releases last week, and none of its games appear in the top 30 chart. There are, by comparison, fourteen 3DS games.

How long can the Vita keep trucking on in this state, by all accounts it's doing about the same in the West.

Vita-L-Statistics-o-meter?

Sounds like it's flatlining! Needs 20cc of Monster Hunter, stat!

The problem being the opposition have seemingly removed all the life saving MonHun medicine, and nobody has come up with an alternative cure yet which has the necessary potency to revive a moribund console.

More to the point I wish Ramone was here to defend his Wii will do 200m!

I think the PS3 is going to have a looong tail. With, perhaps, PS4 carrying it on. Very interested in what Sony choose to do next, especially with their foray into PS+ freebies. A subscrition based model? Would you pay £30 a month for a free console and access to all the games for free?

A milestone for the 3DS. In Japan it has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the PS3. It's comfortly the best selling system in the world right now, almost a million sales last week, nicely spread out over Japan, Europe and the US.

Good news for the big N, considering the 3DS became profitable in July.

Best selling 3DS game so far is Super Mario 3D Land with around 7,5 million copies sold in retail.

Anyone else remember the thread where idiots were saying Nintendo should give up on hardware and make iOS stuff instead.

And before next year is over, it'll have outsold the Wii too in Japan, but eh, the figures flatter to deceive. You know something is up when even the cheerleaders over at NeoGAF don't bring out the itprintsmoney.gif anymore in NPD threads. Its sales are still heavily skewed towards Japan, which is not a healthy sign.

Just to underline how big a deal Animal Crossing is these days in Japan (the portable iteration), it had a massive sales spike this week, and in the process became both the best selling and first 3DS game to cross the 2 Million mark (Enterbrain tracking data), despite experiencing production shortages soon after launch, I wouldn't expect it to repeat the feat when it gets launched in the West.
