Remarkably fun figures to paint, considering as they look like they would be a colossal pain in the arse.

Just one more vampire to paint, and this particular commission will be done :)

Stared at that picture for several minutes, so good!

What'd you use for the skin? Got 3 versions of Strahd to paint at some point. That one on the right would be perfect for him in armour.

Base coat was Russ Grey. Added some of that Space Wolf Contrast paint on as a thin shade (can’t remember what it is called though!) and then it’s just a case of going back to the original colour and gradually working up the highlights with extra whites.

Fairly basic stuff, but works well :)

I suspect this question has been asked a lot on this thread, but when it comes to priming, is it okay to use a base paint?

I know everyone says to use sprays, but I'm in a small flat with no garden. I can't do it inside due to the ventilation (and having a toddler!), and there isn't really anywhere suitable outside the flat. So for the moment at least, sprays are a little unlikely.

The few miniatures I've painted since I got back into the hobby I've used a couple of thin coats of a base, usually either Abaddon Black or Mechanicus Grey. Is that okay or is there something else I should be using.

Brill, thanks @Davros sock drawer. A few Necrons up next so may try Retributor with them.

Just go straight for leadbelcher or brass and save a step.
you might want to do some brush on varnish when you’re done if you’re worried about paint rubbing off.

Thanks @And. I'm not so bothered about the paint chipping (at this stage I'm just trying to build my painting confidence). I'd just heard that priming them black, white or grey was always the first step.

Absolutely loving those Alien figures @Albert Fish. Top work.

well, I’m no expert but for necrons I’ve just been spraying them with leadbelcher and going from there, same for knights or vehicles. then add shade and you’re halfway.
If I’m doing a load of units in one scheme and can get away with spraying them a base colour that cuts out a step I’ll do it - so I’ve used the fang (space wolf grey basically) and death guard green.

The leadbelcher pots are just base paint same as black or grey.
The other approach would be paint black, drybrush silver, done. Skip the shading step.

I want to get some custom bases for my mansions of madness minis - the bases supplied are fucking shit and totally ruin the aesthetic of the game. I want to get some that are like wooden flooring or cobblestones. Is there somewhere I can get them without waiting a month for delivery?

Seriously, though, these shitting bases - imagine going to all the effort of creating these beautiful and detailed map tiles and then covering them in these:

There are literally hundreds of places that sell custom bases. I get them all the time. EBay is a good place, and check your local FB gaming pages. Here there are dozens of guys who have a side business laser cutting off bases cheap, I'd be surprised if the UK doesn't have more.

They make good bases. Some of the ones in the Malifaux pic above are MAS.

Back2Basix also make some good ones, which for me are cheaper but they're made in Aus:
