EA and bad taste

Well i've just recently seen the MoH: Rising sun advert.

It starts underwater looking up at someone swimming with traditional hawaii style music playing. Then the camera pans up and you see all the carnage going on at pearl harbour. A japanese plane gets shot down and the propellor flys towards the screen which cuts to the box art. All this with the tagline "Welcome to paradise soldier".

I've been thinking about the actual games being in bad taste recently but the advertising seems to be even worse.

I will let off Call to Duty as that's a more relaxed adverts that bigs up american, british and russian soldiers finished off with the classic "when their country needed them most" etc.

Oh yeah the trailer for Battlefield: Vietnam really leaves a sour taste in my mouth, especially when it uses an anti-war song to glorify war.

Talking about EA and bad taste, I was at EA Redwood Shores a few months ago and they had this sort of 'family day'. One of the attractions was this horribly tasteless inflatableTitanic slide...

Ofcourse they were not specially made for EA but rented, but it does show some crass insensitivity by the persons who thought this one up. Give them a few years and you will be seeing 'Twin Towers Bungee Jump' attractions

It just seemed a bit weird to me to make a real disaster into an attraction. But it obviously would never have been made like this without that scene in Camereon's flick.

I think the difference is in the way the subject matter is treated, rather than simply the amount of time that has passed.

Taking your examples:

Guy Fawkes is burnt every year for his crimes.

Blackadder Goes Forth tried to get across how awful World War 1 really was.

Dad's Army was, according to elderly relatives, a fairly accurate portrayal of what WW2 was like in a small town on the South Coast in some respects.

So burning Ian Huntley or The Yorkshire Ripper would NOT be bad taste?

Of course time makes a difference.

What has the accuracy or otherwise of the War comedies got to do with it. They both make fun out of a terrible situation but the time passed allows us to treat them differently than recent events.

How is that any different to, say, Pearl Harbour the film? With its major selling point of reliving the attack as a special effects extravaganza.

The whole point of adverts in general is to make you sit up and take notice. Even better if you know what the product is by the end of the advert, what it is for and who made it.

If the advert makes you laugh, stimulates you intellectually or even shocks you, you remember it. You not only remember the advert, you remember the product and who made it... you tell your friends or even some odd bod waiting for the bus!

The advert spreads through word of mouth. Free advertising for the company. It's true, the shocking adverts may put people off... but generally even they will be curious, tell others... more people here of the product and the company!

More free advertising.

If you really are shocked about an advert. Keep your mouth shut!

Remember we are gamers. If you like Big Bass Fishing or Football games, stick to them. If you don't like war games, don't play them. It all personal choice.

You weren't taking my first point, which was that I doubt the advertiser's care about handling anything with respect. They want to sell the game. They want to make it look exciting and thrilling, whilst also making you sit up and take note of the product and who made it. If you go and tell your mates about it, all the better!
