Game's No.1 Xmas Present...

What I cannot accept is that people are cooing over GAME for putting this as their number one present for XMAS

Nobody is cooing. We are surprised. And perhaps seeing this as a sign that Game think they can make money by promoting the cube.

Perhaps they've saturated the market for £130 PS2s?

:-)

[ GC @ £80 is a steal. But no PoP this year. Or Amplitude. Or Gregory Horror Show (the lead character is too cute!). Or Gitaroo Man. Or GTA. ]

Thinking about it, this places the GC as a genuine alternative to the PS2 in a way that the XBox isn't.

Which means that Game is more likely to be able to sell it as a second console / impulse purchase. Which is probably why they're thinking they'll be able to make money out of it.

Didn't anyone else notice that they puffed the Cube, but then forgot to mention that it has its own version of Prince of Persia?

1. Haha, you said "puffed".

2. I think Prince of Persia is a time-exclusive only. Not sure.

I took up GAME's offer of a Gamecube with Mario Kart and Viewtiful Joe (+other bits) when they had their special offer at the start of the month. I also have an XBox and a PS2.

The PS2 gets by far the least use with only a handful of games that I find appealing. The reason I am keeping it is for Ico (that I'm 1/2 way though), Rez (I prefer it on the PS2 to Dreamcast) and some titles that are coming along next year (GT4 etc.). Once I've completed Ico and returned to Rez on Dreamcast, I may well sell the PS2. I think the general standard of releases on Sony's platform is appauling. There are, however, a few diamonds such as the GTA series.

The XBox gets a great deal of use for "serious" games such as Rainbow 6, Moto GP 2, Burnout 2 and of course, Live! gaming.

However, the real star at the moment (and I understand that I'm still in the honeymoon period with it) is the Gamecube. I don't remember ever smiling and laughing so much whilst playing games. Even frustrating titles such as Viewtiful Joe are still FUN to play. I picked up Super Monkey Ball and giggled like a loon for about an hour.

Yes, even _that game_, Mario Kart Double Dash, is keeping me very much entertained. (I'm not jaded by previous titles, having only played Mario Kart on the GBA). I think MKDD is a great game. Good fun single player, great fun multi-player. Yes the AI cheats a bit, but that's part of the game so I'll live with it. I'll not go on about this title, as it's been done to death.

In fact, I'm kicking myself for not having picked up a NGC earlier. The general standard of titles on this platform is (in my opinion) far higher than that for PS2 and possibly XBox. There may not be _more_ games available, but those that are available are generally high quality. The platform's exclusive titles such as the Mario and Zelda series are worth the purchase alone.

My theory as to why the NGC hasn't done too well so far is that;

- It's seen as a kid's console. Therefore does not appeal to the mass market of trendy teens, trendy 20s and more mature 30s. It's a console you'd get "for the kids to play Mario on"

- It is not (easily?) possible to obtain pirate software. Nintendo's custom disc format has been a pain in the arse to pirates. One of the main reasons I know people have bought XBox and PS2 is that they can get it modded and then download bucket-loads of software off the 'net. This is a viral trend in that people buy one because their mate has one and they can obtain cheap/free games

- It does not have licenses that appeal to the 20-somethings and 30-somethings. By this I mean Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Pro Evo Soccer etc. These are the titles marketed across the board but are generally seen as "mature" and "trendy". Therefore, if 20-somethings and 30-somethings are playing them, then the kids also want them, thus pushing NGC out of the kid's market.

However, with the current pricing and a whole load of great games already out there, I think it deserves to do well this Christmas.

Simple, the 75% of the good games on the Cube are multi platform (and those are usually better on the Box).

I admit that the Cube has a few Gems (VJ, MP ect.), but it's being totally overshadowed by the sheer bulk of Box and Ps2 top-notch titles...

What I don't understand, and I mean this whenever such a topic arises, is why is it that all multi-format games seem to be totally ignored when they're on the Gamecube, as if they don't exist? People seem to focus on the exclusives and say "theyse are the only good games," etc., when there is a bucket load of Splinter Cells, Tony Hawks, Hitmans, James Bonds, Conflicts, Medal of Honors, Lord of the Rings, Hit and Runs, Need for Speeds, Fifas, etc., etc.

Why is it? Why are they ignored?

People seem to forget that anyone with *just* a Gamecube can have a huge choice of games just as anyone else can. I think maybe because we're generally the 'hardcore' that we overlook such multi-platform titles and class them as irrelevant since we have other versions of them. This is an apparent blindness that I'm going to point out the next time someone makes such a stupid comment.

All this anger... :D

Anyway, to anyone who states that the cube is a waste of space compared to the PS2 and Xbox - you're an idiot. A class A fool.

I hate lists, but 2nd and 3rd party alone off the top of my head: REmake/Zero, Viewtiful Joe, Ikaruga, PN03, Rebel Strike/Rogue Squadron 2, Eternal Darkness, Winning Eleven 6:FE, Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2(worth the entry fee alone!), Zoocube...and Donkey Konga on the way.

All worth playing and having, IMO.

That's without listing the first party titles that we all know. Then you have all the multi platform titles as Sprite mentions above. The machine is available to £80. It's a bargain and people who knock it... Well, it's just foolish.

I *heart* my gc.

She's a wonderful silver cube of fun.

She's not full of gore and trend and fashion.

She's full of fun and cool.

I have a sparkly PS2, and a heavy Xbox.

But they don't have funny sqeaks when I load and hold down 'Z'

IMHO, obviously.

one thing is for sure... the Nintendo has the least impressive line-up of games of all the current consoles.

yes.

if you're looking for Space Marines™.

fuckwit.

I wasn't going to read the rest of the thread after witnessing such as this.

move along, format war in progress...

Give it a rest people, enough is enough...

just add a couple of "IMO"-s in my posts and we're all happy again...

My head hurts....

It is kinda cool game recommending the GameCube. It should mean some more variation in the sales charts after Xmas, and it'd be sad to see another one of the 'old school' manufacturers in trouble.

And sure, the GC might not have the shelf space in Game, but so what. It's still got plentiful games that will keep most people busy. Smiths near me seems to just have PS2 and GC..no Xbox stuff at all....

Personally, the GC is on my list right behind a new telly and motorbike....the PS2 will come in 5 years at a boot fair.......

Can't we all just try to get along? Won't someone think of the children?

Ah, Venice...

One game... One. Count em. One.

I never intended this thread to be a format war. It was just meant to be a thing of love. :D

I fucking hope not.

and writing "one thing is for sure... the Nintendo has the least impressive line-up..." is stating it as fact, not opinion. it is clearly not a fact even if it IS your opinion.

This comes from an expert, so take note.

I was in Gamestation (Leeds) this lunchtime and asked how their Gamecubes were selling. The sales guy said that they were selling them as fast as they could get them. He said that it was by far their best selling console at the moment.

He puts this down to the recent price drop and the launch of some "big name" titles (I guess he means Mario Kart).

Combined with similar reports I've read from people who've asked at GAME, Currys, Dixons etc. it could be a very good Christmas for Nintendo in the UK. Boxes under tellys means software sales.

You bought 38 Gamecube games?  Wow, that's even more than my brother has!

I have <runs off to count> 39!! Yay I win!! :D

I've got about 5 on the way too.

Oh - and I didn't count duplicate Japan and US copies of Sunshine or Animal Leader/Cubivore.

Do I win again?
