UK Games Expo

Only a few days to go now.

Stuff I'm looking forward to trying this year is the free RPG that they're dishing out to all attendees. Going to give this a go with all the kids and see what happens which may or may not include tears and tantrums (that'll be me if they won't play).

The list of new games to be shown at the Expo has some interesting additions as well including:

a chance to playtest Guards Guards on the Saturday which I'm guessing will be well subscribed

Martin Wallace's new Discworld game Ankh Morpork

I like the look of the new version of Khet (LASERS!)

the Star Trek co-op game designed by Knizia and Dwarf King's Hold by Mantic games which I'm hoping may be on sale

I'm going to be able to try Alan Moon's Airlines and my daughter is equally keen to try this one

Czech Games Edition have two games to test and their releases are always interesting although not always successful in their execution. I liked the idea of Galaxy Trucker and Space Alert far more than the actual games themselves. They have Dungeon Petz and Last Will which I'll be having a look at but may not sit down to play if they look very fiddly.

Take it or Leave it looks like a fun dice game and I love throwing lots of dice and their a couple more simple looking family games in Flip Out and Cubulus.

Four player Draughts! I'm not sure but it could be a laugh for a quick go.

I also want to give Totemo a go.

This is quite a list and there are even more I'm wanting to take a look at as well as hunting for bargains, playing the Living Munchkin game, seminars and general gaming fun. You need a good excuse not to go. :)

Dude, do you want to jump in on the Guards Guards game I'll be playing? I can make sure there's a space if you want.

I would love to Michael but I'm going to have my daughter with me and my mate and his two kids in tow. I don't feel I can abandon them all and swan off on my own. :(

What time are you playing and we'll come along and I can point at you and tell the rest that you're an internationally known gaming celeb.:) That should impress them but do try and look suitably wealthy or at least a bit eccentric.

A lot of the games I've listed we'll probably be able to play together as a big family group until we manage to pack the kids off to the family zone anyway.

Knowing what the place is like, I shall be wearing shorts and an LMD t-shirt. Perhaps I can sport a strange hat?

Also, I'm sure I can organise a game for you and your mate with the designers. If the kids can look after themselves for a bit, let me know and I'll have a word with David and Leon?

Sounds cool. At least two of the kids might want to play as they're 14 and 12. It's a 4 player game isn't it? I wonder where we could stash the youngest? Maybe we could get one of the daleks to watch him for a bit.

Edit: actually I think the kids are shooting off to a Jacqueline Wilson book signing thing at some point so Andy and I would be free for a game and that would be brilliant. Can I let you know later in the week what time that is?

Sure thing - you've got my mobile, just drop me a text. The lads are demoing it all through Saturday, we'll sort something out!

TAR: I'll DM you my number now :)

Just had a look at the site about getting a ticket (assumed you'd show like a purchased paypal docket) and its cash only on the door. Is it likely to sell out? What time should I be looking to get there for? I'm literally going for a mooch. And feel free to say hello to a painfully shy fella standing on his own! :blah:

All mukkers are going to be wearing top hats as per Michael's instructions so we should be able to spot each other.

Alternatively look out for two tall dads, with two tall ish girls and a smaller slightly startled looking boy. That'll be us.:)

Bugger. I've just checked the train prices and they've shot up since I last looked. I can't justify spending just shy of £60 just for the travel (especially with the AGM in London now) :( Genuinely gutted, but I guess it serves me right for waiting until the last minute to book tickets. Sorry everyone, just buy all the fun games and organise another meet up north so I can get to play them sometime.

I've just got back - great fun but my wallet couldn't stand being there any more. Picked up this lot:

I'd not heard of Medieval Mastery, but the demo looked good. Lots of hexes and 60 dice was enough to win me over. The designer said they only got the last few pieces through yesterday and spent last night putting them into boxes :)

Had a thoroughly enjoyable day, didn't pick up anything to extravagant (first ever Fighting Fantasy book though..). Had a very relaxed vibe to it even though some of the rooms got pretty crowded at times. Heard comments from people as I walked through that this year was much better organised than last years.

One of the best game demos I played was King Brick. Such a simple premise but ridiculously fun to play. Didn't get a chance to play it, but Conflicting Kingdoms looked very interesting, may have to follow that one up.

Think next year i'll drag the kids along with me. :blah:

There was a game I played a demo of yesterday which had you racing cars along a wooden track. You roll dice to move, and can keep rolling as many times as you want but if you re-roll a number you've already had this turn, you get penalties. It was really good fun, but I didn't get any details about it. Anybody who was there know what it was called?

Zoom zoom kaboom, I think. I played it yesterday and it was great fun. They were sold out today though our I might have been tempted to get one.

That's the one, thanks. I couldn't justify another purchase yesterday, but I'll definitely be trying to pick up a copy at some point.

Home! Weary as all hell, but that was a wonderful weekend. I'll do a proper write up for the site over the next couple of days, but for now... bed.

Also: TAR - the two Discworld games are great. I think I prefer Ankh-Morpork at the moment, but the Guards! Guards! guys gave me their prototype (the one you saw on the video) to really get my teeth into it. Review coming soon!
