Assassin’s Creed: Revelations

The Sarge

I've never understood why developers settle for rife tearing. It completely undermines all the good work they've put into their graphics engine; if the game isn't stable then tone things down until it is.

Anyway, other than the above the game looks great in every respect. Whilst theoretically I should be annoyed at Ubisoft for annualising possibly my favourite game series, Brotherhood was so good I'm prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

The series is great but an unoptimized engine (especially for such an open game) may be a symptom of the annual release.

I can't remember where I read it now, think it was an interview with Kotaku, but it sounds like they are trying to fix a few of the issues I had with Brotherhood.

  • Smaller Game World - I thought Rome was just too big. Constantinople is apparently slightly smaller, but more densely packed with activity, which sounds better to me.
  • No Horses - Horses are alright, but for me Assassin's Creed has always been about the cities. A well designed city and the use of the new zipline feature should make horses redundant.
  • Emergent Side Missions - My major problem with Brotherhood was the fact it made no attempt to hide or disguise it's huge checklist of side missions. More so than AC2 I felt a little that I was going through the motions, ticking off one by one the theif missions, the mercenary missions, the courtesan missions, check, check, check. None of the stories really interlinked or were relevant to the main plot. Ubisoft claim they are taking a leaf out of RDRs book in integrating side missions closely with the exploration of the city. You'll stumble upon events and side missions that will then develop. This sounds like a step in the right direction.
  • Answers! - I'm in the minority who are really enjoying the plot of the series, and the promise of some actual revelations this time around sounds great to me. The developers apparently promised to "not do a Lost".

While I really enjoyed Brotherhood, in many ways I thought it was a step back from AC2, feeling a little more by-the-numbers and obviously displaying it's much shorter development time.

It sounds to me like Revelations is making all the right moves so far.

The way they have developed the plot up until now I think it would be best to "do a Lost". It's such a mess...

Multiplayer Blowout

Preview (lots more at the link)

All three of the match types I had a chance to play - the familiar "Wanted" mode as well as the new "Deathmatch" (a surperior version of "Wanted" that operates without radar) and "Artifact Assault" (think Capture the Flag) had some strong stealth elements. And while some occasions certainly called for a pulse-pounding chase, by and large the tension and thrill of laying traps and lurking in the shadows is now intact. It's clear Ubisoft intends to preserve its original vision for franchise, and the tweaks to the multiplayer formula seem like they'll successfully encourage that.

Gaining Prestige

With the changes coming to Assassin's Creed's multiplayer, it's likely there will be those of you interested in playing a lot - perhaps every day. Ubisoft is thinking of you, not only giving out bonuses to accounts that engage in matches frequently, but developing an extensive "prestige-like" system, similar to what we've seen in Call of Duty. A level cap of 50 is not even close to the end of what can be accomplished online with Revelations. The development team wants most players to level-up reasonably fast so that all of the multiplayer story experience can be unlocked. As players progress, they'll also unlock customization and combat options. But once players reach the end of the narrative, they can keep going. Once at level 50, the game will track "prestige loops," which are equivalent to acquiring 50 levels of points all over again. No abilities or options will be stripped away for moving into this elite ranking. Remarkably, Ubisoft plans to allow you to do this 99 times, and rewards and bonuses will be unlocked to purchase in the in-game store as you work towards this monumental task. Good luck reaching the top of that very, very high mountain.

Finally...

Seems they made some welcome changes to the multiplayer, rewarding stealth play more than they did with Brotherhood. Who needs first person shooters when you have this and UC3 in November? :)

You are sooooo right. UC3 is Revelations with guns. Multiplayer games without mobility are just boring to me now.

Indeed. And while I love a challenge as much as the next guy, it never really bothered me in the last two AC games as they have so much to offer anyway. Though you can always set yourself a challenge by trying to 100% sync every mission. That's quite the challenge in Brotherhood and I don't think it will be much easier here.

And of course you can always dive into the multiplayer if you want to test your skills.

Exactly how I fell. Games aren't just about difficulty. If you want it AC presents it in a very good way. AC was about the environment, the non-tradtional stealth gameplay, the crazy fucked-up lore and story.

Well, I don't think the AC games were ever scripted, give or take a few cinematic chases. What stops them from being passive is the massive amount of freedom in my opinion. Not just in exploring the city and coming up with your own routes, but mostly in the way you could tackle certain situations in many different ways, the Borgia Towers in Brotherhood being a prime example. It really is a sandbox in that respect, but I prefer the setting and story of the AC games to say GTA or the like.
