I've never watched black mirror before. The Rllmuk hive mind have a hard on for Charlie Brooker and as my girlfriend has Netflix, we gave the latest series a spin. The first one about the virtual video game was funny. Was it meant to be? The second one Smithereens was actually quite good. Is Charlie Brooker going to be like Stuart Lee, where I don't quite see what the hook is?

I think most, if not all episodes have intentionally comedic moments. Brooker has explained that most episodes just come from funny little ideas he's had, often about technology. So whilst not presented as a comedy the episodes often are, part of the comedy also comes from the seriousness in which characters react during more obscure moments.

Just watched the Miley Cyrus episode and thought it was pretty terrible. The second half in particular felt like a Disney Channel movie written for twelve year olds.

Apparently it was modelled on a Disney Channel-style movie. For what it's worth it was probably my favourite of the current crop (though Andrew Scott's performance is the one that really stands out).

The Miley one was good I thought.

i liked how they fused the black mirror tropes with those from a Disney-sequel girls movie, all done with a nod and a wink. Among the whole lineup of Black Mirror episodes it felt refreshing.

I agree. It ran out of steam, but it was a fun watch.

If it was meant to be a send-up of that type of Disney movie I didn't think they did it with anywhere near enough of a wink. In fact, it felt very much like an episode with the explicit, cynical aim of pulling in a different demographic to those who would normally watch the series.

There's a fine line between parody and just becoming exactly what you're trying to parody and for me it fell firmly into the latter. Everything with the doll once it became the 'real' Miley was excruciating.

I’ve just started watching this from the beginning. The episode where the PM has to fuck the pig - was that written before or after the David Cameron incident?

Incredibly, it was written before that.

I found the Miley Cyrus one really jarring until I started thinking of it as a pastiche of early 90s films, then it made total sense.

Also I didn't know that was Miley Cyrus until the end, proving I've just turned 40 and am now completely out of touch.

Of this series I really liked Striking Vipers, the other two were mediocre to poor.

ha, I found Striking Vipers dull but the other two I loved.

It's great that Black Mirror doesn't follow a set formula - it doesn't have to be dark all the time. The frequent change in tone always keeps it fresh, Smithereens and Ashley Too are one of the better ones.

If only Alexa was as good as Ashley Too, I'd buy one.
