How could we give the FPS a shot in the arm?

I want a FPS with realistic physics. And I mean realistic. How many times have you come across a locked wooded door and been forced to go looking for a key, when your carrying the latest military MX-956 MRK II personal anti-tank rocket launcher. I want to be able to blow the shit out of locked doors. Grenades do realistic structural damage, rockets put holes in ANY wall (you hearing me Red Faction team), I shoot out supports of a roof, the whole thing collapses, someone shoots a wooden table beside me, I want a splinter in my eye. Now thats realism. And I want it.

Yeah, Pencil Whipped was the one I was thinking of. I've seen pictures of the Quake Mod as well which looked good...

The main problem though is that you really need to include something else rather than JUST a visual flair/twist...Tron 2.0 (imho) had a very unique look that pulled me in but the game itself felt a bit flat and staid...

My comment was specifically about imagery.  Virtually all FPS games seem to be set in warehouses\industrial complexes or things that look similar (space ship cargo holds etc.).

It just seems so repetitive and lacking in imagination.

Don't get me started on crates...

What about that one that looks like a pencil shaded drawing?

No that doesn't exist. EVERY SINGLE FPS IS EXACTLY THE SAME. That's what I said. Yes.

I'd love to see something like the X-Com games (not the new one but the orginal 3) where you COULD do most of those things as an FPS...

In fact, can you imaging the base/man managament of X-Com combined with an FPS interface for the missions (think Halo with the marines!) with walls being blown away and floors collapsed!

New weapons researched rather than picked up off the battlefield, New armour and med packs equipped before the mission or scavanged off dead teammates!

Missions in your own bases so you can build in choke points and kill zones!

Sorry, thought you meant visually...

Artificial Intelligence that is up to the standard, with the rest of the game. We can produce stunning graphics, sound, animation, etc... But A.I. is still laking in most games. Like for example, Deus Ex 2, and it games like that, that need great A.I.

I suppose we've pretty much shot everything we can within an FPS shooter (aliens, zombies, soldiers, criminals) so I'm not sure where we can go from there apart from different types of aliens or soliders etc.

How about a game where you can shoot celebrities that you hate? Like that bloke in the Halifax adverts?

First person sword games, with a special, er, sword add-on......

There was a multiplayer one on the PC (possibly based on might & magic?) that was a bit like counterstrike (with classes and stuff), where you had swords/bows/spells...

It was crap....

You could say that was crap for other reasons than just that it used a lightgun. ie. Resident Evil is about suspense and tension, putting it into an FPS or gun game would foolish, but into both is an act of lunacy.

I don't really see how a lightgun would work in an FPS though... But it's a nice idea.
