It doesn't have the ports for it, and Nintendo do tend to drop back compatibility after a few gens (no GBA support in 3DS for example), but there's no reason why it couldn't.

Seeing as Wii U is meant to have a PowerPC processor, as the GC an Wii did, there's still hope. I tell myself.

All the "hardcore masses" want in a new console are better graphics / sound / solid framerates and that's fair enough, really.

We don't know one way or the other really if the WiiU offers this or not, though, do we? The fact it's got a different take on a controller has automatically relegated it to gimmick in some people's eyes, despite the apparent third party interest.

There's a lot of stuff you could do in games that you can't because of hardware limitations, beyond shiny graphics and sound.

Just remember we all went ZOMG LOL THAT LOOKS SO UNBELIEVABLY SHIT OMG FUCK YOU NINTENDO FAAAAAAIL OMG NINTENDO ARE DONE etc when they announced the DS. Well, some of us did. And most of us came around to realising it was a cool idea. Maybe a second screen is actually a really great idea for console gaming.

I had to leave work just after the 3DS animations on the stage, just watched the rest.

So yeah, 3DS is looking awesome. Apart from Mario Kart DS I think I want all Nintendo games coming out for it, and I'm especially chuffed to see Luigi's Mansion 2, a true sequel, being in development. I loved that game on the Cube and always thought it was underrated so it's good to see it coming back. Kid Icarus seems to be shaping up nicely too, Starfox and Mario look wonderful. Great stuff.

However, I'm not sold on the Wii U at all. Just like the Wii, we get the 'oh my it will change gaming, we can't wait to see what developers will come up with'. Well, I think I know the answer to that: shit all - probably some tacked on nonsense. None of the show techdemos/examples were particularly appealing and by the time those announced third party games will come out they're already considered vintage as most of them came out a year earlier on the current consoles. I won't be writing it off until it's actually here and we get to see some proper games on it, but there was none of that whoopin' I did when seeing the 3DS lineup. It also seems to be not very powerful at all, the bird demo looked like some graphics card benchmark test from 2001 or so.

Easily the best show of the lot though, and a great lineup. It was also very comforting not to see a single Wii announcement, so I guess the system is officially dead now.

My personal view is that unless they do a complete u-turn on their online policy, i.e. remove friend's codes, add voice chat etc. then any attempt to woo back the 'hardcore' will be a wasted effort. Of course, they'll still be left with a console that will at least pump out the games in HD but in regards to your point about what people actually want and the apparent apathy / cynicism thus far, I can see why people are a bit wary.

To be honest, I think a lot of 360 / PS3 owners would rather see Nintendo drop console development all together and just be a software developer...

Well considering all we got was a look at the controller and one short video (the bird one) which looked pretty damn impressive if representative of the visuals we can expect from it, why don't we just wait for some concrete stuff on the system before making downbeat predictions on it.

And as for the people moaning about the games looking just like the PS3/360 versions... Well, duh! They were probably the 360/PS3 versions being shown as this system isn't anywhere near finalised yet.

Man, this thread has been a fucking embarrassing read.

Pretend I also included animation, scale and physics in my previous post. :)

So will Sony be, financially, they're planning on the PS3 lasting ten years.

PS3 doesn't have to remain as their lead platform to last 10 years. Look at PS2. Show something next year for 2013. I think MS will move before Sony does though.

I don't think the third party Wii U games that they've shown are all there's going to be. I think probably when the Wii U is out all the games you're excited about on your console will also be on the Wii U at the same time. You know. Probably looking better on the Wii U. I think those third party games are more to show you that it's got support of all the third parties.

Oh get over yourself, you really think that the multiformat titles on Wii U will look a generation ahead compared to their 360/PS3 counterparts? They'll be a bit shinier at best, and there will most likely be as much difference as there is now between PS3 and 360 versions of the same game.

Care to enlighten a recently-relegated-to-casual gamer?

Natural terrain and environment deformation for a start. At the moment Red Faction Guerrilla can do it in a limited way, but if you could do something like that with improved accuracy in a city with the density of structures of GTA IV and AI that were smart enough to exploit that deformation in the same way you can (did it never bother anyone that RFG's baddies never though of bringing a roof down on you?), you'd have a very compelling and chaotic Saints Row 4.

Usually what people wind up doing at the start of a new console generation is run off and raid research papers for wacky stuff you've now got the horsepower to experiment with in real-time, so hopefully in a few years some crazy stuff like emergent dialogue with proper speech synthesis, or proper dynamic climates could come into play.

Sounds fun.

What's funny is the likes of Napoleon giving it all "I do love Nintendo but they lost me with the Wii"

Well there's a consoles that plays all the games he really likes AND Nintendo games and he's all "But but but, you know, but some time in the future the next Xbox will probably be better."

The Zelda video looked pretty much current-gen, hardly Crysis 2 standards though. The machine is not going to be able to compete, on a technological level, with Sony and Microsoft's machines- Nintendo know it. They'll launch next Christmas, for £179, use it as a step up for Wii owners, and surf six months, maybe a year tops as a comparable console to the 360 and PS3 with ports of the last big 360 and PS3 games.

Have you even played RFG?

Yes.

I got bored after completely clearing 3 areas. It was fun initially being able to put charges on buildings then run away and set them off but it got old very quickly. The other sand box games staples (timed a to b driving sections etc) got old pretty quickly too.

Well, that reply completely ruins the acidic put-downs I had planned. :(
