My currently feeling is that it's a massive 3DS (without the 3D). No bad thing I guess, but I reckon they could have made the screen significantly smaller and achieved the same thing. I know that it means you can play without a TV, but for a 'home' console that's not really an issue. I think they may have shown the thing a little early as well (a tech demo and single powerpoint slides of concepts don't cut it), but next year will be when they add some meat to the bones.

But yeah - the 3DS shone with the power of a thousand suns.

Now, off to go dig out some quotes from Scott going on about twin sticks, and also how he CAN'T play games on handheld screens that aren't 3D.

People say they want traditional controls and HD from a Nintendo console.

Nintendo gives them precisely that. It turns out they want traditional controls, HD, and for it not to be a Nintendo console, and have just been wasting everybody's time.

Bellends to a man.

3rd party support sounds cool n all, but lets face it, people will buy battlefield, DS2, Ninja Gaiden as soon as they come out on the ps3 / xbox. Same with all the other titles. I would say there will be a short enough time frame for nintendo to have this console out and for developers to make games for the ps3 / 360 at the same time. Then Sony and MS will be on to the next gen consoles and all the developers will jump ship again.

(or the DS (on the controller)).

Well, yes, but you know what I mean. There's a similar sort of philosophy going on there.

The 3DS circle pads are ace. No need for sticks.

Take your crow, sit in the corner and be quiet.

I'm not sure everyone's appreciating the possibility of HD gaming in bed. Under the covers. Just you and your WiiU controller.

I'm just catching up on all this, but what is the screen resolution? Do we know? There's some serious kit in the thing if it can chuck out HD 60FPS images wirelessly into the controller. The controller is (basically) just the 'receiver' isn't it? (like I said, I've just got up to speed).

Very odd responses in this thread.

What was expected, exactly?

Is it to do with the software? You want new franchises?

Or is it to do with the machine? You want something a lot more powerful than the PS3/360 with a bit left in the tank for Sony/Microsoft's next consoles?

For me it's kinda this. I like the idea of the console and that it has enough performance to adequately (seemingly) cope with the titles that everyone are bemoaning that the Wii is at the moment currently lacking.

But, what, the console has to last 5-6 years with that hardware. If sony and microsoft haven't made some inroads with a new hardware upgrade by that point I'll be mightily surprised. At which point, if their specs are higher than nintendo's machine, then you're faced with the same situation as the wii was in originally.

That said the console/controller is at least interesting enough to see where it'll lead to differentiate some of the 3rd party games likea s someone suggested earlier, the detective mode for Arkham City.

Edit: What a fairly pessimistic mind I have. All the best to them really.

It seemed gimmick ridden. The being able to see a top down on the golf ball playing Wii Sports Golf just seemed pointless. The throwing shuriken stars at the TV will be novel for all of two minutes. The browsing section just confused me as I didn't see the point of it. The controller is very interesting as there's nothing like it out now (nor has there been before) but it just seems like a gadget rather than a peripheral.

I'm more interested in what the console can do but I honestly think (after watching the keynote and the GT interview with Reggie) that the specs are as yet totally unknown and what it is going to be able to do is unknown too - it's very early. I doubt it will look like it does either - it looks horrible.

E3 is great but they can't tell you everything about everything in that short space of time. Reggie hinted that there's a lot more news and info going to coming out of Nintendo over time... hold on to your hats and hype.

I have a feeling it'll be a great console but I'm still not convinced about the controller... it's interesting but it just seems a gimmick.

Is it too late to hope that Gabe Newell might make an appearence at the press conference? Maybe he simply got stuck entering the arena.

When you turn on your 3DS tonight his face pops up and goes "It's-a-me, Gabe-y-oh!", before announcing Half-Life 2: Episode 2: Part 2. He doesn't do 3.

Has this been posted yet?

In a bizarre twist to an otherwise exciting news day, during an interview today just following Nintendo’s showing of its new Wii U system and games, company honcho Reggie Fils-Amie told GameTrailers that the sizzle reel of games shown today were not actually from the Wii U. Instead, when asked if they were from PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, Reggie replied “Absolutely, because we’re talking a year away from when the console will launch.”

Nintendo Wii U demo games shown today were actually Xbox 360 and PS3 versions

You see the third party games announced which are also on PS3 and Xbox, well they want the sequels to those games announced today. I guess. and yeah it's weird, the third parties haven't done that. It's weird they haven't said you 'see this game we're tryng to sell you, well we're already making a better one on it's due out on a different machine. Suckers.'

Then reggie's face appears next to it, and they both lock eyes and stare at each other forever.

Best firmware update ever.

Hahaha at the chumps saying they looked worse than the PS3/3600 versions.

So it's confirmed, the Wii U is massively more powerful but third party stuff is just going to be ports. Well, that's not too bad I suppose, I can put up with PS3 level graphics and then Nintendo will deliver the real eye candy.

But no one knows the specs of this thing yet, everyone just assumes it won't stand the test of time against Microsoft/Sony. Of course it's a possibility, but Nintendo haven't given specs and it's still doomed from this perspective for some bizarre reason: perhaps because they opted to showcase their new control method instead. There's nothing saying that it won't have this fancy new controller and awesome specs, just the assumption that with Nintendo, it's one or the other.

Fair play to Keighley he really pushed Reggie and from that interview it was definitely a case of Nintendo catch up, with Reggie ticking off boxes that the other platform holders had years ago.

Because Nintendo are the market leaders and now they're ticking off the boxes of what makes the minor players popular for total domination. It's weird though, the way you typed it Nintendo were on the back foot rather than ready to completely fuck everybody's shit up.

They showed a lengthy rendered video with the express and sole purpose of showing off its graphical prowess. We have a pretty good idea of its power, and it isn't exactly overwhelming.

Nintendo's big problem is that they have to convince about 80 million people or something, who buy games consoles once in a blue moon, to go out and buy a new one less than 5 years after the one they have came out. If they can also go "well, it has the big Sony and Microsoft games" it might just work.
