Hoarding / Collecting

This is both OT and Discussion, but what the heck. Do you hoard stuff? I know that it's very similar to collecting, which is what I think i'm doing to an extent.

I'm surrounded by boxes, boxes for consoles that I'll never put into that box, yet it keep it. Why? It's mad. I know i'll never ever sell my Panasonic Q but I just have to keep the box for it, the bags inside it, the instruction manual, everything. Same for my Dreamcast, N64 and PAL GC. And my XBox. (if i had a ps2 i'd keep that too).

The other day i bought a GC controller from Comet, and straight away I found myself putting the empty box in the cupboard. There it has sat for 3 days, but I'm now having a clear up and i've just ripped it to shreds <_< Why the fuck did I want to keep a controller box for something that will never go back into it?

Same with a steering wheel i've just bought, was gonna keep it, but now it's trash. I can't bring myself to tear up my console boxes though....

All i'm saying is that i'd never keep the box for a hoover, a tv, and dvd player or whatever. Straight in the bin. Yet when it comes to games, i open it carefully, get pissed off it i tear it or whatever. And keep it.

I suspect alot of us are like this with our gaming stuff, but do you do it with overstuff too? Or do you chuck it all out whatever it is?

Ack, I'm a boxphile too, I just can't get rid of them! I think I've still got my Megadrive box too from back when I didn't even really care about that sort of thing, but now it's the stage where, for no real reason, I keep the boxes. And it's very strange.

I do exactly the same thing, I've got loads of boxes under my bed for consoles, pads, memory cards etc, including all the plastic bags and stuff inside.

I do it with other stuff as well, I bought one of those replacement all in one remote control things ages ago and I've still got the box for that. Wierd.

I keep them so when the console is packed away, it doesnt just go in a bag, it goes in the original box, plus the boxes have memorys related to them, such as when buying them or pictures of games on the back.

I keep all my stuff, it doesnt take up too much space but still its nice to have. Ive still got my Panny Q box, just something different, exotic and nice to have. I have doubles of a few games i love as well.

Thinking in purely practical terms though, the boxes stuff comes in is usually the best for transporting it around....

And if I want to pack away stuff (like my N64 or Saturn) I can just put it back in the box and stack it in the cupboard rather than endnig up with a mass of tangled wires....*

*Of course I have to spend hours untangling them BEFORE I can put them away but what the hey....

I have this glass doored cabinet in my lounge, meant for displaying stuff like ornaments really.

However, it has N64 games in it - and the box for my GC component lead! I feel compelled to keep it cos it has lovely Japanese writing on it. Same for the memory card box. And GameBoy Player box.

I do it becuase I know i'll end up selling some of my stuff.

Fully boxed items fetch more money, obviously.

You see this is where it all started i think, keeping in the knowledge that i may want to sell it on later. This has happened in the past. ish.

I'm much the same, I keep everything. I still have boxes to DC memory cards and so on, I even have the box to my 3DO sitting around (I don't have poor taste, it was free). I'm even worse when it comes to actually selling stuff. I lost my job recently thanks to that delightful postal strike so until I get a new one, I've been forced to start trading games in, which was a tough decision. My mate had to drag me into Game kicking and screaming because I didn't want to trade in crappy games I knew I'd never play. I think I need help.

I keep boxes for everyhting from new toasters to videogames. I think I have this paranoia that if something goes wrong I won't be able to take it back. Hence my other absurd collection - receipts. Everywhere. And most of them don't even say the shop name or item name so they're useless anyway!

I have the exact same thing, in the loft I have boxes for not just the consoles, but for extra controllers and official cables. I even have the box from Lik sang that they sent a few set of maraccas in because on the customs declaration it says "Dancing accessories" which always makes me smile.

I told my wife I'm keeping the boxes as the consoles are worth more if I sell them, but she knows I'm never going to sell them, and I know this as well, and yet I keep the boxes... why <_<

I also have boxes for DVD players, VCR's, TV's etc in my loft... just in case we move, though I intend never ever to move again.

I've never thought about this before, but now I feel like I should see a shrink or something.
