The Next Gen consoles

Well, I don't think I need 100 "friends", so the limit there is ok. I don't want a notification when AKUMASTABBA comes online, but would like one if big Jim does, or whatever. Having a separate community I could check for like-minded folks to invite to games or make myself appear as available in would be lovely. Maybe you can even have a community-specific status, if you're looking to play Rose Ball rather than fight or whatever, or Co-op. Or maybe you're looking for love? I know I am!

Next-gen consoles: Further indications point to March reveals

New CVG feature examines Microsoft's and Sony's announcement options

By Rob Crossley for CVG UK

The next PlayStation will be announced to the world before E3 in June but after the Destination PlayStation event in February, industry sources have told CVG.

screenshot_296209_thumb_wide300.jpgIn a new feature analysing the reveal date possibilities for the so-called Xbox 720 andPlayStation 4, CVG has predicted that Sony will likely hold a one-off industry event during GDC week to reveal its new console.

However, Sony Japan may not want the system to be first revealed on a stage in San Francisco, and so a 'PlayStation Meeting' event outside of GDC remains a possibility.

Either way, industry experts believe that some features of both the next Xbox and PlayStation will be discussed openly during the Game Developers Conference.

Michael French of industry publications MCV and Develop said the reveal was "likely because both Microsoft and Sony have to get developers on-side".

"In 2005 Microsoft didn't announce the Xbox 360 at GDC, but they did discuss the 'HD era' in great depth. I remember they even gave out HD TVs to developers who attended the speaker session."

French said a similar forward-looking GDC keynote was made by Nintendo at GDC 2005, with the company discussing the Wii's processor tech.

"The reason why this is so important is it plants the seed in the wider development community about what tech the machines will use and how to get the most out of them.

"It wouldn't be a surprise if Microsoft or Sony completely focused their GDC talks on one aspect of the systems, like cloud technology. The consumer press materials will likely be saved for E3, but I expect some early information to be revealed at GDC."

Meanwhile CVG has been informed by development sources that the next Xbox will be announced in some form before E3, but further leaks of information are not likely. In the analysis of the console's reveal, CVG expects the next Xbox to be revealed late in May.

I don't understand why the other companies don't copy Nintendo Direct. It's actually a really good way to just hear about the games coming out and stuff about the consoles/networks. Announce whatever you want in a direct broadcast to fans on Youtube, UStream, XBL, PSN, whatever and leave the shows for investors and stuff.

I'd like Microsoft to slim down the controller's prongs a bit, whack in a better d-pad and use sticks that don't wear out so quickly; I've owned about eight 360 controllers, all of which developed analogue drift after only a couple of week's use.

I'd like to see Sony have a stab at something new control wise, but if they are just going to itterate on the DualShock they should switch in a d-pad like the Vita's — probably the best I've ever used — and make L2 and R2 more like the Move's trigger.

Going back to hardware specs, VG247 are reporting that Orbis is more powerful than Durango. Meanwhile NowGamer are reporting the opposite.

I'm more inclined to side with VG247's article, with the proviso that teraFLOPS aren't everything so the machines will probably balance out about the same. NowGamer's report doesn't gel as well with the other rumours I've seen and sounds a bit too much like wishful thinking.

Measuring console power in teraflops is like measuring how efficient your plane is at taking people from point A to point B by considering the horsepower of the engine. It's part of the picture, sort of, but piffling details like aerodynamics and how many goddamn seats it has really need to factor in your decision.

Nowgamer are wrong. They based the article on a load of bullshit someone posted. The VG247 one is probably correct. Although orbis sounds like it's been boosted at the last minute (not uncommon, nintendo does it a lot). Pure TFLOPs wise it seems like both machine are quite powerful, although not upto high PC standards. Powerwise the GPU's would be mid range PC cards.

Yeah, I just clicked their source link at the bottom of the article and it took me to a suspiciously pro-Xbox LiveJournal of all things. That's possibly worse than just making things up under the guise of "anonymous sources".

Has VG247 just read the NeoGAF thread or something? same specs as I saw posted ages ago, was hoping for something more up to date.

If it all plays out spec wise, it's a bit of a re-run of the current gen for Sony and Microsoft, devs will be moaning about the lack of RAM in the Sony Box again, but at least this time around, they probably won't moan much about the GPU being crap or the CPU being a pain to understand.

The GPUs are both based on AMD's GCN architecture introduced last year, so both should support megatextures in hardware (but from what I recall, it might not be that flexible an implementation of the idea anyway).

Oh, Sony Germany have outed Star Wars 1313 as a PS3 game due this year, if true, expect a massive downgrade from the PC tech demo version.

The new Xbox dash ads are often used for announcing upcoming games or special events these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the Live Events app (which worked well for the Mars landing) will be piping out the 720 announcement.

Oh, really? I only ever get ads about crap like Mountain Dew or music on mine. It'd be great if they did that, think they underuse their networks in giving us information like that.

thats kind of what i find confusing (as a non pc gamer).

There's essentially an additional layer of software abstraction between the game and the hardware on PC, which coupled with the fact you need to write your PC engine to support many different GPU configurations and only one on console means that you'll get significantly more real-terms performance out of a console GPU than the equivalent PC GPU.

It's mostly just the home screen, and often it's just pushing some movie or another, but the other week they were telling people to go get the DMC demo.

Is that really so true these days with multi platform dev? Wasn't the whole idea of the Xbox that it just used DirectX?

What does this extra layer of software do? Why is it there?

I'd have thought hardware + library to talk to hardware + game engine thqt talks to library would be what you'd have on pc and same for consoles. Is that not right?

It just uses DX, but AFAIK you're addressing the GPU through an optimised API that maximises the efficiency of the calls. You also aren't running the game alongside of a gigabyte of multitasking OS.

I can't believe Nowgamer gave any weight to that grade A nut job who writes misterxmedia. Not only are his claims utterly ludicrous, (his comments have been laughed at over at Beyond 3D) but he's well known to be an utterly deluded fanboy who's convinced everyone has an agenda against his precious corp:

http://misterxmedia.livejournal.com/102720.html

Honestly though, the thought of him sitting behind his computer interviewing himself, and then publishing it to get his kicks is really rather tragic. lol

The VG247 stuff matches much of the speculation, but there's no way you can make any definitive claims about real world performance based on flop counting alone. Even though both consoles will likely be based on AMD architectures (which will give the comparison more weight than it did this gen), a few fixed function chips could greatly improve performance of each consoles output potential.

Exciting times though, and word is that Polygon is preparing to unveil the full Durango specs in the coming weeks.
