Yeah, he was great. It's quite rare to see somebody be universally popular, but Sir Bobby definitely achieved that. It's not just that he was a nice guy, but also that he was bloody good at his job. He won major honours at domestic and European level in four different countries which is a hell of an achievement. His teams played attractive football, and it seems he was hugely influential in bringing people like Mourinho and Villas Boas through.

He was a gentleman. He wasn't simply nice, he was honourable. A lot of the media forget how badly they treated him but despite him having no connections to Liverpool, we all remember him fondly and consider him a gift to the English game.

The hounding of Robson prior to the 1990 World Cup was one of the first of many low points of the football media.

Wouldn't even say it was one of the first, they have a less than glorious past but for some reason are still held up by many as bastions of journalistic integrity.

Anyone seen the Congo U17 team?

No way all this lot were born before 1994.

That would hardly be a first for that type of tournament. I remember going to the U16 WC final at Hampden in 1989 for Scotland vs Saudi Arabia. The Saudis had beards that would have made Bin Ladden jealous!

Also a good pointer at youth football results don't match later development, as that Scotland youth team went on to do the square root of f*ck all. They beat Portugal in the semi-final who had lads called Figo and Rui Costa in their ranks, no idea whatever happened to them!!

It seems like Alexis Sanchez is going from Udinese to Barcelona for somewhere in the region of £32,000,000. He plays mostly on the right hand side of a front three, doesnt he? If he starts then he is going to take either Pedro or David Villa's starting place. I wonder if Barca will try to sell David Villa to Man City or Chelsea or somebody before he turns 30. I wonder if Villa will want to move because he was famously reluctant to leave Spain when Valencia were trying to sell him to a club who weren't direct rivals.

Arsenal have also said that Barca have asked about Fabregas again. If they want him and they are signing Sanchez then there is a good chance they will need to sell. Perhaps they will get a few quid for Zlatan, and the Qatar sponsorship has done their coffers the world of good, but it will be interesting to see the big transfers happening at the Camp Nou this summer.

He used to play on the wing but his best form this season was playing behind the striker. He's versatile so will be able to occupy any of Barca's front 3 positions if need be. Everyone is on about him replacing Pedro in the first XI, however I wouldn't be so sure as his movement and understanding is nowhere near Perdo's level, it'll be like when Ibrahimovic was playing for them. Sanchez will be good though as he adds some depth up front and allows Villa/Messi/Pedro to be rested.

Barca is Sanchez's first choice, but apparently Udinese are not not happy with their offer. I doubt Barca can afford both Fabregas and Sanchez this summer, even with the €24m from Zlatan. Signing both would come to around €70m and then you've got two massive wages to add. I'm sure Bojan will leave if a suitable club can be found. I can't see who else Barca will sell unless Villa does go, their squad is full of players who are not worth much or players they would not dream of selling.

Villas Boas has confirmed to the Portuguese papers ( I read it in A Bola) that it's all arranged with Chelsea, all that's needed is for them to pay the 15M Euros for his buy-out clause. I'm gutted as a Porto fan, but I undertand the appeal to follow in Mourinho's footsteps. I just wish we had been able to keep him and the current squad for one more season, he could've taken us so far in the Champions League.

If this goes through, he'll take Mourinho's crown as the most expensive manager in the history of football. I expect there'll be many more crowns to come.

Last year of his contract isn't it? Think its motivated by that.

Fuck that, though.

The kid's got a year left, with some additions we've a good chance of making the playoffs, and potentially going up. Then we renegotiate his contract.

Unless we're buying a superior goalkeeper (and I'm not familiar with any available in the same bracket) then we're losing out on this deal.

He's ambitious though, probably just wants to move to a bigger club :P

Apparently not:

"At the end of the season Leeds United and I both made a commitment to honour the last year of my contract and try to win promotion with Leeds United.

"Therefore it is with great disappointment that I have learned that Leeds United have accepted an offer from Leicester.

"I want to put on record that I have never asked to leave the Leeds United, nor did I reject an offer for a new contract, since one was never put to me.

"I was enjoying being a Leeds United player and was looking forward to winning promotion this season with the club.

"I have spoken to the manager Simon Grayson and he has made it clear to me, that, in spite of having played well for him, this is something he believes is a good deal for Leeds United.

"I have been put in a very difficult situation and will spend some time considering my options for my future."

I think Swansea will be the top finishers of the three, personally. Especially if Taraabt leaves QPR, which there's rumblings about.

Fortunatly for us Taarabt's just about intelligent enough to learn from his time at Spurs and realise there's no point leaving for a top 4/6 club before he's establishe himself. But also dumb enough to some how manage talk smack about other clubs he'd actually like to sign for ("QPR's Adel Taarabt keen on transfer to 'not very big club' Newcastle"). On that basis I think we've got him at least til January.

If this is real, it's out of order and Villa fans will be very upset.

Paul Ince appeared in a newspaper wearing a Man Utd kit before he left West Ham and they never forgave him. This is slightly different as Downing isn't a Villa product like Ince was (i.e. one of their own) but it's still bad PR... especially considering how much money this lad is on.

I hate the summer, it's just rumours, speculation and agents trying to get better contracts for their mega-rich clients. Roll on August.

Anyone read up about the Olympic football announcement (source and source)? Finally, the four FAs have agreed to lend their set of players to a British/UK team for the 2012 Olympics. Common sense prevailed.

EDIT: Although, there seems to be some confusion as the Scottish, Irish (IFA) and Welsh FAs have denied any knowledge of any agreement!
