Planetside 2 - Epic online FPS battles with armies of players (F2P)

Recommended Posts

Time just evaporates when I'm playing this, enjoying it so much.

My character of choice is definitely heavy assault, which makes sense as I enjoy similar classes in BF. People always run away from tanks, I instinctively run toward them :P Even if your rockets don't take them out, you can really soften them up for someone else to finish them off. I've had loads of assists this way. ATVs will die with a single rocket. Gun turrets on bases will take loads, but if you're sniping from distance with your Sunderer nearby, it's generally fine. Also look out for the pistol icon in your colour on the map - if the control panel hasn't been destroyed (anyone can do this, just shoot them) then you can get ammo from these.

I was part of a big base defence last night, combination of reds and purples coming at us. We really struggled to keep the flags, but there were enough of us that they couldn't properly take over. It lasted an hour before I logged off to sleep, so who knows how long it went on for. At one point, I gave Engineer a whirl, which is a blast. Repairing gun turrets (3rd weapon, hold triangle to access - pull R2 to use, you need to be close to the damaged turret) makes a huge difference to not getting swamped with vehicles. We had one particular path to the base that was a constant struggle for control, so I periodically went back to one of the turrets to keep him alive. The engineer turret is a pain in the arse to setup (I think hold L1, which spews ammo packs, but then move left/right until a glowing thing appears - if it's green, you can place the turret with R2), but well worth it. I was taking a beating from snipers and tanks, but dished plenty of damage. I think being up on the highest aircraft platforms helped, but I also tried it down low - helps to have a combat medic constantly healing. Same thing with heavy assault, pair of us were barricaded up and holding a particular walkway with a medic keeping us going, felt like the old days of Heavy + Medic in TF2.

So, when you die, it tells you the gun that of the person that took you down. I originally thought it was a % damage over default, but now I'm not so sure, having looked through a lot of the purchased weapons and mods. I'm wondering if 100% means default damage, and anything less means they've added mods to give the gun different characteristics (like maybe greater range at the expense of recoil)? In fact, for folk worrying about the F2P aspect, all the paid stuff doesn't appear to be automatically better, just different. For instance, the cheapest replacement rocket launcher for the heavy has a lock-on, rather than fire and forget, but does a third less damage. In fact, as memory serves, I don't think any of them did as much damage as the default launcher, but they all had pros and cons.

Anyway, spent some coin on making my engineer turret better. Sounds like I also need to look at better amour?

I'm really enjoying this. I'm close to at least buying a months membership, but it's great fun either way. When you suddenly find yourself in a huge group of players it's pretty mindboggling.

I'm also favoring the heavy assault, I managed to bring down a fighter last night with the starter rocket-launcher through pure luck.

I'm now saving up credits for the heatseeking air- and ground-missile, so you blues and purples better watch out. :-)

If you're talking about what I think you are, that's "of the damage you took resulting in your death, the percentage dealt by the guy who finished you off (and off to one side the next biggest proportion)".

There is one more powerful rocket launcher, but the projectiles are slower.

Nanoweave armour is the default "last longer" option (although even the max level is only something like +20% health), and there's the faster shield recharge too to get you back in the fight faster if you didn't die, but getting one of those means not getting the other more specialist options like more ammo/grenades.

Why did they change the colour scheme from the PC version? I chose the red guys meaning that all friendlies are red. Kill red is coded into the brain, and I don't know how many team mates I have shot when turning a corner and being surprised by someone being there. Why on earth can't you change it like you can on PC?

Ventured out from Koltyr last night for the first time and it's a scary world out there. BR11 now though! I can fly aircraft badly!

It's fine on the PC, even mouse and keyboard, but hells bells vehicle controls on the PS4 pad. I can barely move the ATV in a straight line.

Will stick to bumming a lift from people. And shooting planes down.

Is it possible to get a game with friends? I can't even see what server I create my character on, presumably I need my friends to join the same server first?

Anybody know how to accept a revive from a medic? It just gives me the option to decline or respawn.

I think I press 'X' on the PS4

Might give this another go tonight, is there any way to play with fellow rllmukers? (I just seem to get dumped into a game with randoms every time I start).

I did that but it re spawned me back at a sunderer. Is it not supposed to make you get up from where you were killed?

Bugs I reckon.

Had an epic session tonight. Things just came together more and started playing mostly with the heavy class which feels like the best one to get started with. Bought a scope and some other bits for the standard gun and the guns suddenly felt a lot more satisfying. Most epic part of the night was trying to take over a base with 20-30 of us and not making much headway until this point:

Felt great making inches of progress and then just taking it over. Ebb and flow really is quite rewarding. Also took out my first plane with a rocket, which was great.

I've been really enjoying playing this. If anyone is having ideas of playing together then I believe you'd have to be on the same server and in the same faction. For what it's worth I'm on Ceres and am with NC (blue).

Yeah, it's a bit rough round the edges. But for me the spectacle of the whole thing makes it up. I do feel like i'm getting more used to the controls now.

When you're a part of a big invasion/defence and there's skirmishes everywhere over land and air, it all comes together. At first I was always getting stuck into the inevitable meat grinder that comes with every base capture, but have learned to hold back a bit and chill out, rather than needlessly throwing my life away again and again and again and again. Most of the time tend to play as a medic or heavy.

One particularly memorable battle saw us fighting over a bridge high in the air to get to the enemy base, slowly pushing the stalemate back over about 45 minutes. The bridge had two levels, with tanks trading shots on the top and infantry fighting through the gantries below. All the while being strafed by planes from both side. Eventually the base was captured and with that momentum we rolled through 2 or 3 more in quick succession with everyone piling into the nearest APC as each fell.

I'm yet to actually play with anyone I know, or really pay any attention to the squad mechanics. I can imagine it's alot of fun being in a squad you'd actually want to talk to, and have a plan about how to approach things.

Unlocked the first aircraft the other day and spent a while having a go at that. Finding it really hard to actually land any shots on other aircraft, let alone accurately strafe the ground. From what I can see there isn't a way to hover and see the battlefield below, which makes spotting things to go for really tricky. I also spent about 100 certs on buying some decoy flares (for when some AA has a lock on etc), only to find that I had to choose between using that or my radar (which I've found to be essential in actually finding where any other aircraft is in a fight). Lock-on rockets seem to be the only reliable way to do any damage really then, but they're about 1000 credits i think, which I guess would be weeks of playtime.

Had a great couple of hours on this last night.

Jumped onto the desert map and ended up defending a fairly small base, not very well protected for about an hour. Teams were approximately 10-15 each side. Our base had a steady stream of infiltrators taking down the base shields and lots of tanks rolling in. We had to dig quite deep and my side seemed to not really favour using vehicles so I ended up in quite a few tank battles.

Once I felt we might be able to move from defend to attack I sneaked out of our base and went in the mountains to the right of their next point - another very small base with just one capture point and sure enough the opportunity came to take theirs. I went in as a lone wolf and caused some pain for them by consistently contesting and capturing for a good 15 minutes.

After dying I then spawned a sunderer and parked it in the mountains. The opposition saw what I was doing and killed me a couple of times, but it was already well parked and the team was already starting to spawn from it. Switched to an engineer briefly to solidify the sunderer and then switched quickly to a sniper with a good view of their spawn at the base from the mountains.

By this point, all pressure on our base was off and our team pushed forward on foot and in tanks and quickly took over the base. A rolling troupe of tanks and sunderers formed and we quickly took over another 4 bases to little opposition before calling it a night.

It felt remarkable how long it took to come out of the stalemate that had occurred, but once we found a way to break through the rest quickly fell. Satisfying stuff,

Base building is coming to Planetside 2

Planetside 2 fans can soon enjoy a much-requested feature.

In a recent Planetside 2 live stream, Daybreak Game Company revealed its plans to implement base building features into the shooter MMO – something many fans have requested.

Players will need to collect resources in order to construct bases. As you’d expect, you’ll be able to destroy as well as build bases. Players can defend their constructions with AI-controlled turrets.

These turrets won’t target random aircraft flying nearby, by the way; until the base is actually attacked by a rival faction, they’ll have a very short detection range. Once things kick off they’ll become much more deadly, so aircraft won’t be an easy end to sieges.

No solid timeline was provided but these new features are expected in the PC version sometime in 2016. The full livestream, embedded below, goes into much greater detail and also discusses a major map revamp, the continent capture system and changes to the leadership system.

My thoughts are pretty much what the guy above says. Particularly about it been currently chaotic and new tactics been developed tho the patch only landed Wednesday so it's all very new.

They've also brought in a new population balancing mechanism which limits the percentage any one faction can over populate a continent. It kinda thins the fights out a little from my experience playing last night, unless you're on the "busy" continent, whichever one that happens to be.

Even this early on in the patch, the player made bases can be quite formidable if properly set up and require proper armoured columns to take them out. It'll be interesting to see how important they become in the overall play once the initial buzz has died down.

edit: it was also pretty much bug free which is surprising. They also revamped Indar again, with new base design and taking some of the bases out of the lattice system.

I'll see if I can find how to embed

How do you imbed? It seems to have changed since the upgrade?

edit: sorted thanks to Danster

Are there many people on this? I played briefly when it first came out but I kinda felt items lacking without a team. That little bit of co-ordination as such

I wanted to like it, having followed the PC version from beta, but it didn't quite click with me. Ultra awkward vehicle controls, etc.

Really like the sound of the new mechanics they've added, going to get this reinstalled.

edit - oops, meant PS4.
